1 out of 5 stars It is impossible........2007-09-28

I had this mail to review a book that I would love to read. However I still did not receive it. And nobody is able to explain what happened to my book that bought the book in August. It will be my last purchaise at amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, interesting and well illustrated.......2007-05-06

With a clear prose and a CD with links to all source material, this book is a great source for any biologist interested in the development of organisms, and how it was all figured out.

3 out of 5 stars Needs streamlining.......2007-03-09

This book is a decent developmental textbook, but it focuses too little on explanation and too much on storytelling. While this style is appropriate in group talks, it wastes time when someone is trying to learn quickly and makes it difficult to find the useful pieces of information. The only way I have been able to use this book is with a highlighter at all times.

The text could also benefit from a reorganization. It seems that in order to get a good picture of the pathways that are recurring themes in development, one has to read the book out of order, and that can be confusing.

Other than that, it is factually accurate for the most part and has a sturdy binding, so it will last. The paper it's printed on isn't too great and ink/highlighter can show through, but not too badly.

Overall this is a good introduction to developmental biology, but it is not very useful as a quick reference or for someone trying to learn a specific organism quickly.

4 out of 5 stars great.......2007-01-26

This book is easy to follow with great details about techniques and special topics in embryology. The CD is of great use for class and lab.

3 out of 5 stars miss.......2006-07-24

This book offers a nice historical look at biology, but very little (if anything) about embryology is covered. The same can be said for the important development of anatomy. Sometimes it's best to read other reviews to find out if purchasing a book is the right decision or not. In this case, listen to the negative reviews. They're correct.

    Book Description

Regarded as the "Bible" of mammalian embryo manipulation techniques since the 1986 publication of the first edition of Manipulating the Mouse Embryo: A Laboratory Manual, the third edition of this essential laboratory resource has now been completely reorganized, rewritten, and updated by a new cast of authors. The result is a compilation of new, cutting-edge protocols that include embryonic stem cell production and genetic manipulation, mouse chimeras, mouse cloning, assisted reproduction strategies (including intracytoplasmic sperm injection and in vitro fertilization), whole embryo culture systems, electroporation, embryo and gamete cryopreservation and rederivation, and gene expression, as well as more extensive background information on the use of these techniques. The "gold standard" techniques for applying recombinant DNA technology to investigations of mammalian embryonic development included in the first two editions of this book are also updated and recast, as is the summary of the current state of understanding of mouse development at the molecular level. This book is the premier authoritative and comprehensive source of technical and theoretical guidance for mouse developmental biologists and geneticists and is an essential resource for newcomers to these fields.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The New Testament?.......2004-01-20

A definitive summary of mouse development and simple, concise proven protocols. This is the best publication there is for this kind of work. It's much better than the 2nd, ed. I wish it had more of a troubleshooting focus, but I guess if you are in this line of work, you should be able to figure out problems yourself, or query the tg list.... I like how there are alternative strategies mentioned depending on how your lab is equiped (or not).

    Book Description

The splendor and beauty of a child’s growth and development in the womb--seen through unforgettable images made possible by revolutionary advances in visualization technology

What’s happening with the baby now? All expectant parents ask this question throughout the exhilirating months of pregnancy. Fuzzy sonograms and doctor’s explanations can provide basic information, but through Alexander Tsiaras’ remarkable achievements in medical imaging technology, parents can see, for the first time, the awe-inspiring process of a new life unfolding, in stunning, vivid detail.

The milestones of pregnancy which before could only be described can now be witnessed: the heart’s first beats; the appearance of color in the eye; the emergence of toes and teeth; the brain and nervous system directing development; the first movement of tiny legs and arms; the first indications of gender; the wondrous symbiosis of mother and child; the symphony of the body’s systems coming into being and working in concert. The book tracks the development of a baby from the moment of conception, through the explosively complex early stages of development and the amazing stages of growth as the baby is nurtured by the mother, ending with the joy of birth.

All this is made possible by revolutions in two sciences. As biologists have decoded the molecular basis of life, computer scientists have developed non-invasive, three-dimensional techniques for visualizing the body. Alexander Tsiaras has been a pioneer in merging these explorations and discoveries. He has created a virtual camera studio that enables him to view a human body or any part of it individually, scan it, enlarge it, rotate it, adjust its transparency so that we can view inside a living being, and light it from any angle. The result is an ability to illuminate the unseen elements that make us who we are, and the miraculous images in From Conception to Birth.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Impressive photos AND dialouge!.......2007-06-18

I hesitated to buy this book because I heard some of the negative reviews, such as "the Nielson book is better" and "the images are fake, clay". However, I found it is more MUCH more informative and interesting than "A Child Is Born". It is modern, cleverly written, and really worthwhile as a coffe table book or baby shower gift. The format of the book is mostly photograph/art, with small paragraphs of information. My husband has been reading this book about what is happening to the baby every morning at breakfast, because it is written day by day, which is different than most pregnacy guides. It is free from advice, it is only factual.

    4 out of 5 stars A Life Unfolds.......2007-05-25

I was very happy with the book. The photographs were amazing!

    4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-01-20

The photography is definitely the highlight of this book. It also gives you a great biology review. Perhaps more than the average person would want to know. My only criticism is that it focused more on the embryonic development than on fetal development. I realize that most of the fascinating transformations occur in the first trimester but I still was hoping to see great photos of the second and third. I preferred Beginning Life by Geraldine Flanagan to this book.

5 out of 5 stars As incredible as being pregnant!.......2007-01-10

This book has got all the info you need when you are expecting. The pictures are so cool, my son loved to look at them to see what his sibling looked like at each stage. Very informative and eye opening!

5 out of 5 stars From Conception to Birth.......2007-01-03

Amazing pictures! Great for future parents, parents or for anyone else who have interest in learning a bit more.

    Book Description

For anyone who has ever puzzled over the mysterious and often infuriating behavior of a teenager comes a groundbreaking look at the teenage brain written by the medical science and health editor for The New York Times. While many members of the scientific community have long held that the growing pains of adolescence are primarily psychological, Barbara Strauch highlights the physical nature of the transformation, offering parents and educators a new perspective on erratic teenage behavior. Using plain language, Strauch draws upon the latest scientific discoveries to make the case that the changes the brain goes through during adolescence are as dramatic and crucial as those that take place in the first two years of life, and that teenagers are not entirely responsible for their sullen, rebellious, and moody ways. Featuring interviews with scientists, teenagers, parents, and teachers, The Primal Teen explores common challenges–why teens go from articulate and mature one day to morose and unreachable the next, why they engage in risky behavior–and offers practical strategies to help manage these formative and often difficult years.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Yet Another Ridiculous Parenting Book.......2006-12-01

The is yet another book premised on the assumption that your teen (or child) is some kind of alien. Remember -- you were once a child and a teen yourself, and your child will eventually be an adult, and maybe even a parent. Just relate to your child as a person, and forget about this book.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-read for every parent!.......2006-05-04

As parents of teens, we tend to think that--by now--we have pretty much figured out what makes our kids tick...hormones, immaturity, psicological issues...right? Well, maybe that is only part of the picture. This books does a wonderful job of going beyond that, to the neurological foundation of behavior itself. It clearly explains the ramifications of the changes that are going on at a neurological level in the brain of teens and how that, consequently, translates into "teen behavior".
Your kid is not "crazy"...their frontal cortex just needs more time to develop! A reassuring read for every parent!

5 out of 5 stars Not an Instruction Manual.......2006-03-16

Strauch's book answers many questions as regards my teens' behaviors. My last one at home is 16; I purchsed this book to help me understand what is happening within that skull of his. Strauch utilizes her research to not only explain what my own child is going through but also helps to clarify the behavior of youth today as far as impulsivity, criminality, and various other compelling and noteworthy up-to-the-minute pertinent and important information we need to help our teenagers be successful in this day and age. The book is written somewhat like an investigative report, with a humourous punch, and is easily read by parents and teachers alike. It is an enjoyable and worthy read.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read for Parents, Not Neurologists.......2006-02-23

This was a good read for parents of teens or pre-adolescents who are not in the medical field or some related field. The author is not a researcher but a journalist putting together what they've learned about the topic. (Some parents may have already done this for themselves.) It's not as detailed as someone well-read on the topic may hope, but for someone just becoming interested, perhaps someone experiencing shocking episodes in their own home with their own primal teen, it's a good starter book! Glad she put it together. Hopefully there's more to come with more neurological detail.

5 out of 5 stars So That's What's Going On in Their Heads!.......2005-05-13

This book has helped me understand so much about what is going on with my teen! I could not put this book down. Now when my son does something odd, I just think, well at least I know why. Of course their is still your active parenting involved, but you know how to approach things better, and with an understanding of what may, or may not, have been going on in their little teenage brains. Buy it.

    Book Description

The on-going core of this atlas is its standard of realistic illustrations that portray anatomical relationships. Photographs of actual cadaver dissections along with numerous schematic drawings aid the student in anatomic orientation. Chapters are organized by region, in order of a typical dissection. Each chapter contains two sections: a description and illustration of organs, and a depiction of those organs within the regional anatomy. New to this edition is an increase of MRI pictures, approximately 30 schematic drawings made even more precise, and an updated text where appropriate. A Brandon-Hill recommended title.

I consider this book to be a must for any anatomy student. The pictures are exactly what you will see when you enter the lab.

5 out of 5 stars love this book.......2007-03-28

In case it isn't clear from the description or title, this is an anatomy atlas made up of photos of actual human bodies. I don't know why we didn't have this in A&P. Fascinating, and a nicely produced book as well.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK, EVEN GREATER IF YOU OWN ONE!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-26

AM A SECOND YEAR STUDENT OF ANATOMY, AND AM GOING INTO THE RADIOGRAPHER TECH PROGRAM AT MY SHCOOL I JUST BOUGHT THIS BOOK AFTER SEEING IT, AFTER SOMEONE BOUGHT IT. SO I ORDERED MY OWN COPY, AND AM TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY BY THE PERCISION OF THE BOOKS DETAIL ON EVERY SINGLE PHOTOGRAPH. I THINK THIS WILL BE A DEFINATE KEEPER, AND IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE PRICE WITH A SIGH, DON'T JUST GET IT AND ENJOY!~

Also recommended: ALSO STRONGLY RECOMMEND THE COLOR ATLAS OF HUMAN ANATOMY by Wolf-Heidegger!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Two sided ..........2006-03-25

My opinion about this book is a bit two sided and that's why:
I bought this one for my first year medical anatomy course and was a little mystified by it, at least at the beginning. I couldn't really understand what is going on in the corpse and as I looked into this book the sight was "cleaner" but similar. Naturally I put it away for a while and used Netter which was excellent.
A while after I became familiar with gross anatomical structures I opened it again, and only then I undestood what is going on inside, and only then I understood how great this book is!
Especially nice and logical where the drawings and explanations included.
Thus, my conclusion is that this book can be a great find for a student who has already taken the course, for a review or other purpose, but for a true beginner in this field it is almost the same as looking at the body.
In my opinion, to make an Atlas understandable for the beginner, it must NOT be real but must present the human body as seen through the eyes of the student. This job is perfectly done by Netter.

    5 out of 5 stars A great anatomy text.......2005-09-29

I agree completely with the review by Gerald J. Nora. The book is first rate and does a fantastic job of showing the "real" anatomy as opposed to drawings where the artist takes some liberties. The text begins simple and builds upon it. The only down side is that the labels are not ordered in a top down fashion. For example, the labels may be: 3, 2, 4, 8, 7, 6, 5 which can be confusing. Overall the book is highly recommended as a reference to a traditional anatomy text.

    Book Description

This abridged version of the bestselling reference Handbook of Stem Cells, Two-Volume Set attempts to incorporate all the essential subject matter of the original two-volume edition in a single volume. The material has been reworked in an accessible format suitable for students and general readers interested in following the latest advances in stem cells, including full color presentation throughout. Although some extra language and chapters have been deleted, rigorous effort has been made to retain from the original two-volume set the material pertinent to the understanding of this exciting area of biology.

The organization of the book remains largely unchanged, combining the prerequisites for a general understanding of adult and embryonic stem cells; the tools, methods, and experimental protocols needed to study and characterize stem cells and progenitor populations; as well as a presentation by the world's experts of what is currently known about each specific organ system.

    * Full-color presentation througout
    * Each chapter begins with 3-5 defined glossary terms, and all of the terms are collected in a comprehensive list within the book
    * References have been eliminated - now there are about 10 bibliographic entries per chapter

    Book Description

Gene regulatory networks are the most complex, extensive control systems found in nature. The interaction between biology and evolution has been the subject of great interest in recent years. The author, Eric Davidson, has been instrumental in elucidating this relationship. He is a world renowned scientist and a major contributor to the field of developmental biology.

The Regulatory Genome beautifully explains the control of animal development in terms of structure/function relations of inherited regulatory DNA sequence, and the emergent properties of the gene regulatory networks composed of these sequences. New insights into the mechanisms of body plan evolution are derived from considerations of the consequences of change in developmental gene regulatory networks. Examples of crucial evidence underscore each major concept. The clear writing style explains regulatory causality without requiring a sophisticated background in descriptive developmental biology. This unique text supersedes anything currently available in the market.

    * The only book in the market that is solely devoted to the genomic regulatory code for animal development
    * Written at a conceptual level, including many novel synthetic concepts that ultimately simplify understanding
    * Presents a comprehensive treatment of molecular control elements that determine the function of genes
    * Provides a comparative treatment of development, based on principles rather than description of developmental processes
    * Considers the evolutionary processes in terms of the structural properties of gene regulatory networks
    * Includes 42 full-color descriptive figures and diagrams

5 out of 5 stars A real theory of biology and evolution.......2007-03-23

This book will be a revelation to any biologist who has not been reading the literature on development and embryology attentively. Davidson eloquently articulates a real theory of the mechanism by which the genome computes the embryologic development of bilaterian animals. The argument is carefully developed from simple principles to more complex implications. The figures are a major part of the book's exposition, and repay very careful reading of the legends along with the associated text. The references are as current as 2006, so the book is quite cutting edge in its outlook. I heartily recommend it to any biologically sophisticated reader. It does presume elementary knowledge about biochemistry and molecular biology at about the freshman/sophomore college level. Enjoy!

    Book Description

"Knowing how we know" is the subject of this book. Its authors present a new view of cognition that has important social and ethical implications, for, they assert, the only world we humans can have is the one we create together through the actions of our coexistence. Written for a general audience as well as for students, scholars, and scientists and abundantly illustrated with examples from biology, linguistics, and new social and cultural phenomena, this revised edition includes a new afterword by Dr. Varela, in which he discusses the effect the book has had in the years since its first publication.

This book, if read carefully, will change the way that you look at the world. It is powerful and insightful.

    5 out of 5 stars So, what's your story?.......2007-05-03

I came to this book years ago through, of all things, a two-year course in business and sales, for which it was required reading along with "Computers and Cognition", another eye-opener; the latter anticipated the current transactional nature of the Internet. You might ask how a work as theoretical and speculative as "Tree of Knowledge" could be part of a pragmatic and hardnosed business course, and that is one key to its attraction for me: as intellectually intriguing as the ideas and assertions in this book are, even more engaging is how they might actually change the way we act in the world.

The authors drill down to molecular biology and then carefully build upward their premise that we construct the worlds we live in out of language. Each of us exists inside a story we tell ourselves about the way the world is, and we are completely contained within that story. In that sense, we interact with other people through the way our stories talk to their stories. And the success of our relationships and the effectiveness with which we act in our world is dependent on how well we can recognize the stories of others and understand the nature of our own story.

This is good news, once we recognize it, because we are a narrative species. On my way to work in the morning, I am telling myself a story about the way I want my day to go: what I expect, what I want to accomplish, how I will confront the challenges along the way. The story I tell myself about my life has heroes and villains, goals and challenges, grand themes and petty foibles. The more we understand the grand, rich, complex stories those around us are telling themselves, the more we can overcome misunderstandings, conflicts and cultural dissonance - the more, in a sense, we can constuct a meta-story that serves us all as human beings.

This is not a quick and simple read, but it is so logically and carefully laid out that I never felt lost along the journey. It is a wonderful book to read in tandem with a friend, or as part of a book club. The discussion and the "aha!" experiences it prompts make for a lively exploration of its ideas. Part of the joy of "Tree of Knowledge" is its potential for promoting tolerance of those different from us, through recognition of what drives their story rather than through compromising our own values.

"ladylucero", in her review, noted that "Tree of Knowledge" is required reading in some American universities. I read that in the authors' native Chile it is even taught in high schools. This, I believe, is good news: the earlier in life we recognize how our individual stories drive our hopes and expectations, our fears and disappointments, the more capable we will be of living well with our fellow human beings.

5 out of 5 stars We forget that we're animals...........2005-09-20

Amazing piece of work. Very slow reading... meaty. Well written. This should be the primer for every field of study in every country. We are first and foremost biological organisms. We live in language like fish in a fish bowl. Fish can't distinguish water. It defines them. Same with language with human beings... we are defined by our listening and speaking and don't have a clue.

The illustrations are the best... I think it is one of the most important books of our time.

4 out of 5 stars Another Look at Knowledge........2004-12-14

Excellent and superb are words that come to mind while reviewing this work. The authors, Drs. Humberto R. Maturana (biologist, University of Chile) and Francisco J. Varela (Foundation de France Professor of Cognitive Sciences and Epistemology, Paris) attempted and succeeded in providing a clear and concise work in a difficult field. Their goal was to "propose a way of seeing cognition not as a representation of the world 'out there,' but rather as an ongoing bringing forth of a world through the process of living itself."

Knowing how we know, or how we perceive is the subject of this intriguing work. In writing on this subject, the authors present a refreshing and new approach to cognition-one which has dramatic cultural, social and ethical ramifications.

The work, originally published in 1987 and re-released in 1992 as a revised edition, is attractive, colorful and well-illustrated. Unlike many books, whose pictures, graphs and figures merely fill space, each illustration performs a beneficial and needed service. In ten chapters, the reader is led slowly through the concepts and disciplines of perception, classification, heredity, biology, psychology, sociology and philosophy.

Since its initial publication, The Tree of Knowledge has received favorable attention from the public, has been out of stock in most bookstores and has been used as an undergraduate text at the University of California. While stimulating the imagination of readers it has, however, not received the scholarly acclaim it richly deserves.

    1 out of 5 stars A Real "Gem" (Apologies to D. C. Stove).......2004-11-18

Maturana's antinomous conclusions are based on the following (embarassingly) invalid inference:

    1. All knowing is doing and all doing is knowing
    2. Therefore, we can't know the way the world is.

They might just as well have argued:

    1. I must use my eyes to see the world.
    2. Therefore, I can't see the world.
