Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book.......2007-06-05

It's really hard to say too many things about this book. Even older editions of Color Drawing are great, but this newest one goes above and beyond the call of duty. In an age when a lot of books get re-released as new editions with few substantive changes, Color Drawing breaks the mold by updating the techniques with current technology (i.e. Photoshop). It's great to see that the author and publisher realize that pure hand-drawing and rendering is quickly becoming a thing of the past and that the practitioners of today and tomorrow need to have excellent computer skills too. This book is full of very useful tips for combining Photoshop with hand drawings to create great effects. So even if you have an earlier edition, do yourself a favor and buy the new one anyway because you will learn a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Color Drawing: Design Drawing Skills and Techniques for Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers, 2nd Edition.......2007-01-06

This is an excellent resouce for the study of rendering. After detailing the elements of color and design, it describes, step-by-step, how to achieve many finishes both interior and exterior. It is both instructive and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.......2007-01-03

This is the standard for rendering in architecture and interior design as far as I am concerned. It will most definitely become a required textbook for my classes in visual presentation in the years to come. Doyle takes you step-by-step into the process of rendering with marker, color pencil, and pastels. But he doesn't just spoon feed you the recipe for each material rendering, he presents the basis for a process that allows you to render virtually any material not found in the book.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT rendering help.......2006-02-25

My rendering skills have improved HUGELY scince recieving this book. It helps with marker, colored pencils, pastels, how to treat light, etc. My renderings look amazing and it is a great reference for when I'm not sure how to treat a surface/object. I would absolutely recommend this book.

    Book Description

Drawing extensively from various disciplines including ethnology, geography, geology, and environmental studies, this groundbreaking book addresses shifting concepts of time, history, and landscape in relation to the work of pioneering American artists during the first half of the 20th century. Paintings, watercolors, and photographs by renowned artists such as Frederic Remington, Georgia O’Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Thomas Hart Benton, Dorothea Lange, and Jackson Pollock are considered alongside American Indian ledger drawings, tempuras, and Dineh sandpaintings. Taken together, these works document the quest to create a specifically American art in the decades prior to World War II.

The Modern West begins with a captivating meditation on the relationship between human culture and the physical landscape by Barry Lopez, who traveled the West in the artists’ footsteps. Emily Ballew Neff then describes the evolving importance of the West for American artists working out a radically new aesthetic response to space and place, from artist-explorers on the turn-of-the-century frontier, to visionaries of a Californian arcadia, to desert luminaries who found in its stark topography a natural equivalent to abstraction.

Beautifully illustrated and handsomely designed, this book is essential to anyone interested in the West and the history of modernism in American art.

A Child's Garden is an excellent guide for parents wishing to create natural spaces in the garden where their children can openly play and explore. Stepping beyond the traditional ideas of building a treehouse or planting a vegetable garden, the authors include 60 unique ways to tailor a landscape to nurture a child's sense of enchantment and wonder. For instance, many children like to hide, and the book includes ideas for building natural caves out of woven willow branches, climbing vines, or weeping shrubs. For parents wanting to plant a good tree for climbing, this guide knowledgeably recommends the fast-growing and sturdy Norway maple as one of the best. It's filled with such information throughout its nine sections on water, creatures, refuges, dirt, heights, movement, make-believe, nurturing, and learning. Messages on safety are wisely included, along with an excellent list of resources covering everything from buying butterfly houses to visiting selected children's gardens. Through its many color photographs and warm, wise text, A Child's Garden will draw parents into their children's timeless, carefree world and perhaps back to a time when they themselves explored streams, played in the sand, studied bugs, and roamed without agenda. --Karen Karleski

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars don't choose norway maple.......2007-01-12

I have not read this book, but was disturbed to read, in the description of the book, the suggestion to plant norway maple as a climbing tree for your child. Norway maple is an invasive species in northern forest zones, and is threatening habitat for sugar maple, an important tree for wildlife, tourism, maple sugaring, history, and the regional economics that accompany those. Norway maple became very popular in urban areas for its pollution tolerance. It should not be planted anywhere near natural habitat for sugar maples. American beech is an excellent choice for a hardwood tree with good climbing branches, and delicious nuts. All hardwoods grow much more slowly than softwoods. There's nothing wrong with climbing a white pine tree. And try swinging on birches.

5 out of 5 stars What a Wonderful and Enchanting book!!.......2001-04-30

Our whole family has enjoyed reading this book to get ideas for our Sunflower/Fairy Garden!! Every section offers wonderful ideas that we would never have thought of to add...What Fun our Magical Garden will be thanks to, A Child's Garden : Enchanting Outdoor Spaces for Children and Parents! One section offers the idea of planting different berries around the yard so the children can snack as they play! I have given this book to our landscaper to see what ideas he has for adding water to the garden...Already he has suggested using a water pump to circulate water in order to make a small trickling brook for our boys to sail their boats on! I also got the idea to make a willow archway that will be child size for the children to cimb through! We are so very excited to spend this summer creating and adding to our Enchanted Fairy Garden!

    5 out of 5 stars Enchantingly possible!.......2001-02-27

Every page of this book has full color photos from some of the most incredible gardens for children I have ever seen, from the large elaborate planned spaces of botanical gardens, to small modest spaces that will fit any space or budget. While this is not a heavy-duty "how to" book, it is a book of ideas--and we all know that ideas lead to other ideas! The cover of this book alone is inspiring!

The author asks, "How important are the old childhood pleasures of collecting seed pods, fishing in ditches, making bowers, picking flowers, and climbing trees?...long hours of unstructured outdoor exploration are a fast-vanishing aspect of contemporary childhood." She continues, "...the environment [on her uncle's farm] was so complex--full of smells, varied land forms, and mesmerizing creatures. I remember a scooped out pond surrounded by mud in which pigs, geese and ducks joyously wallowed. The strange pungency of the air, the frighteningly gigantic hogs, the mysterious, billowy grasses...still fill my senses." The author talks at great length about the psychology of nature, and of German educational reforms of the early 20th century (but only the good ones ). Each page has a line fron a Robert Louis Stevenson poem, for "...you may see, if you will look Through the windows of this book, Another child far away, And in another garden play."

The book includes suggestions for water gardens, sensory gardens, vegetable gardens, themed gardens, natural sand boxes, mazes, and attracting wildlife, plus many resources for strange seeds, odd plants, and landscape designers in varied areas of the US and the UK, all geared towards making a child's space a natural one.

BTW, when I bought the book, my kids grabbed it from me immediately. They love to look at the gardens and plan ours. Oh, and there are two black and whilte photos in the book: One is of children during WWI, tending a large city garden; the other is a 1940's style playground, with the steel and concrete structures that many of us recall from childhood. My 4yo playground-lover looked at both, and declared that he'd rather explore the garden.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for parents and gardeners.......1998-12-15

This book is exactly what I was searching for. I love to garden, but I also need to accommodate my two rambunctious children and a variety of pets. This book has page after page of creative ideas, safety considerations, examples, and plenty of photos. The author is clear, interesting, and very informative about both gardening and childhood development.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful way for parents to connect with their children.......1998-09-27

This beautifully illustrated book looks at gardens with the delight of a child from the perspective of a mother who loves her children and her community. Ms. Dannenmaier shows us how to get more out of the natural world, no matter our age or environment. She shows parents how to connect with their children in the garden, particularly urban spaces. This is a great gift book.

4 out of 5 stars An Inspiration for all wildlife artist.......2007-03-09

First thing. This is not a tutorial book. It's an inspiration book for artist and a gorgeous coffee table book. I am an artist and my only disappointment is that some of the art captions does not tell you what medium the artist is using. You have to guess at it and sometimes you can not tell from oil or acrylic. They are that good.

    4 out of 5 stars An Inspiration.......2006-04-28

This is a gorgeous book containing wonderful illustrations (and images of a few dramatic sculpture pieces) from sixty wildlife artists in a diversity of style and creativity. It's a great book for inspiration but this is not a tutorial book just to note.

5 out of 5 stars With Grimm and Steiner you can't go wrong!.......2001-12-13

Let me just start off by saying this is a great inspirational book for anyone interested in wildlife art or just a a plain fanatic of it. This book is loaded with All-Star artists! Practically all my favorites and it even shows work from my buddy and former roommate Adam Grimm (Youngest Federal Duck Stamp Winner).... ...I've done allot of studying and these artist are the one's to look up too. Their work is outstanding and if you set goals to have art like these artist you can't loose. Coming from a Wildlife Artist.....5 Stars! ... ...

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who loves Wildlife Art!.......2001-08-16

I purchased this book and it is the best of my collection. All the masters of wildlife art are included: Robert Bateman, Carl Brenders, Terry Isaac, Lester-Seerey and so on. Great work and a bio on each.

    Two thumbs up.

      Book Description

This lavishly illustrated publucation illuminates Camille Pissarro¿s remarkable transformation from a Barbizon-style landscape painter to one of the leaders of the emerging Impressionist movement. This is the first major examination of the revolutionary landscape paintings Pissarro created between 1864 and 1874. During this pivotal decade in the artist¿s career, Pissarro produced his most beautiful and innovative canvases and his experimental techniques and vision laid the groundwork for an entire generation of painters. This publication brings together approximately 50 of these exquisite paintings, from key works included in the Salon exhibitions of the 1860s to a powerful selection of landscapes seen in the first Impressionist show of 1874. Many of these paintings are drawn from major museums around the world and rarely shown private collections.

Along with full-color reproductions and in-depth catalogue entries on the paintings are essays on the development of Pissarro's painting style from 1864 to 1874, and on the influence of place in his work¿acknowledging his formative years in St. Thomas and Venezuela as well as his fascination with the countryside surrounding Paris. Technical studies of several of the artist's paintings from the 1860s reveal new insights into the artist¿s creative process. This volume accompanies an exhibition organized by The Baltimore Museum of Art. It will travel to the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Tennessee and the Milwaukee Museum of Art in 2007.

      Book Description

Published on the centenary of the death of Paul Cézanne (1839–1906), this stunning book celebrates the artist’s depictions of his native Provence. While Cézanne is recognized as one of the fathers of the modern movement, this publication focuses on his own sense of achievement, especially as a painter exploring the landscape in and around his hometown of Aix-en- Provence. Although he spent time elsewhere in France, especially Paris, Cézanne repeatedly returned to Provence, where he lived nearly all of the last twenty years of his life.

In studios at the Jas de Bouffan and at Les Lauves, and on painting expeditions into the surrounding countryside, Cézanne created some of his most original and compelling works, not only landscapes but also portraits of local characters, friends, and family; still lifes, and imaginative figure paintings, such as the monumental bathers painted in the last decade of his life.

Beautifully illustrated with some 160 paintings and watercolors, Cézanne in Provence offers fascinating insights into a true genius in the history of art and his beloved native countryside.

      5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Journey.......2006-03-09

This book is a lovely accompaniment to the Cezanne in Provence exhibit. The narration is beautifully written and describes the beautiful landscapes that Cezanne painted. It provides an interesting chronology of Cezanne's life and works.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2006-03-01

This is one of the most beautifully done catalogues I have purchased recently. The color and clarity of the reproductions are excellent. The paper used has a dull mat finish which enhances the quality of the reproductions. If you love Cezanne's painting (which I do), then this is a must have addition to your library.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2004-11-25

This is a great book for the gardener with little space. All of the gardens featured are pretty small by suburban standards. But none the less, the gardens and designs Keith Davitt covers are spectacular.
You will discover how to get rid of that same old boring lawn that everyone else has on the block. Davitt takes you through creating your very own unique garden with stone, brick, gravel, water and lots more. He covers why it works for the owner and the space given. It gives valuable insights for the gardener planning a new space.

5 out of 5 stars Crafting a unique, personal, and relaxing atmosphere.......2003-10-10

Lavishly illustrated with full-color photography, Beyond The Lawn is a treat to page through and recommended for gardeners everywhere looking to add a bit of originality to the grounds outside their home. Offering a vast panoply of materials for crafting a unique, personal, and relaxing atmosphere, Beyond The Lawn is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended addition to professional and personal gardening reference collections.

5 out of 5 stars Many unusual beautiful gardens & good design analysis.......2003-08-08

This book is full of pictures of unusual and beautiful gardens all very different from one another. I especially enjoyed seeing the variety of what is possible. The text focuses mainly on design with discussion on style and analysis of what works and why. Although I think Keith Davitt's first book "Small Spaces Beautiful Gardens" was a superior book with more information on how each garden was created and before & after pictures, I still highly recommend this book for its many examples and design tips.

5 out of 5 stars The Definative Primer on Labyrinths.......2005-07-25

The labyrinth is one of those symbols that have been found in almost every sacred tradition, from pre-historic to Grace Cathedral San Francsco. Unfortunately the richness of this symbol is not yet realized in the current rebirth of labyrinth popularity.

This book is the masterwork that shows the depth and diversity found in the tradition of the sacred path. LThe labyrinth story is told through many photographs of labyrinths from all cultures and belief systems. Especially fascinating are the classical Roman and Greek labyrinths, litte known great cathedral labyrinths, Hebraic labyrinths, Native American labyrinths, Hindi labyrinths.... I suppose you have the idea by now. The labyrith is a part of everyone's cultural and faith heritage. Find your's in this magnificent tome.

4 out of 5 stars The Labyrinth Bible.......2003-12-21

This book is known by general consent as the "Labyrinth Bible" -the ultimate tool for the knowledge of the history and meaning of such a mysterious symbol.
Written by German lawyer and art historian Hermann Kern as a catalogue for a labyrinth exhibition hold at Milan, Italy, in 1981 this encyclopedic work covers the social and cultural world panorama from pre-history to modern times; the new English version is enriched with a new chapter by North-American expert Robert Ferré on modern labyrinth revival and with addenda written by British specialist Jeff Saward.
The cyclopic knowledge Hermann Kern shows in this complex, bewildering and paradoxical subject sounds sometimes ambivalent (like the symbol itself) but the book as a whole is a very good and important resource to understand the entangled complexity of this millenary symbol; with an almost thorough black-and-white catalogue (enriched with some magnificent colored photographs) of the most historical labyrinths known up to the 20th century; in addition to this the author approaches the several questions that baffle the labyrinth study like the origin of its conceptual idea or its symbolic meaning.
Historically the book is an impressive research from classical authors until recent geographical findings all over the world. However, his rationalistic approach misses the poetical (and potential) "Weltanschauung" needed to penetrate into the enlightened knowledge which transcends space, cultural concrete applications and time; besides this particular aspect this new version would deserve a better translation.
We, scholars, artists, researchers and enthusiasts are all indebted to Hermann Kern (as well as to Robert Ferré and Jeff Saward) for this (en)cyclopic work, which opened doors leading into the exciting field of further research.

        4 out of 5 stars World's greatest labyrinth compendium.......2000-03-01

A museum curator, Hermann Kern spent six years researching labyrinths for an exhibition in Italy in 1980. He then expanded that information and assembled the most complete compendium of labyrinth information ever assembled, from history to the modern era. Published by Prestel, a company in Munich, Germany, that specializes in art books, this compendium was available only in German until the current English edition, which took three years to translate and update. New material has been added to cover discoveries and contemporary labyrinths of the last 20 years, making this the most complete presentation of labyrinth information anywhere. It contains hundreds of photos. Granted, Hermann Kern is quite opinionated and confident of his opinions. Nevertheless, any serious labyrinth enthusiast should own this book. I rate it four rather than five stars because, except for a color section in the beginning, all of the photos are in black and white.

5 out of 5 stars The story of Modern Art.......2007-04-12

The art of the last century viewed through the eyes of one of its best critics. This book is lavishly illustrated, very easy to read, an invaluable introduction to modern and contemporary art (that is, until the early 1990's). Hughes is one of those few critics who know how to admit they can sometimes be wrong (see his mea culpa on Philip Guston's late works), but who is almost always right.
The book itself is divided into chapters which do not necessarily follow a chronology but rather distinguish different themes such as "the mechanical paradise" (Cézanne, cubism, futurism), "the faces of power" (expressionism, Dada, art under Communism or Fascism), or "the landscape of pleasure" (Monet, Gauguin, Matisse, Louis, Noland), etc...up to "the future that was" with insights on contemporary art and the art market.
A book that has already become a classic, almost like Gombrich's "the Story of Art".

5 out of 5 stars The rise and fall of modernism.......2002-07-13

This is based on the script for a BBC program. To be a good TV program, it should have a clear and plain storyline which could fit into limited timetable. You can identify such a feature in the form of book, though substantially enlarged. The author did his best to make a clear impression of what was modernism in the visual art on reader (and audience). The author begin the book with what modernist artists perceived as ¡®the new¡¯ in their time. They thought they lived in thoroughly distinct time from the tradition. The new age demanded the new art. Modernism is the logical upshot of their zeitgeist. To understand it, we should pay attention to the interaction between artists and the time.
In this regard, Hughes organized the book not in time order or changing styles but with keywords which summarize the zeitgeist of modernists like machine, power, pleasure, utopia, freedom, popular culture, or future, to endow the reader with the tangible vision to see into the deep question of modernism.

        2 out of 5 stars Not For a Beginner.......2002-05-21

This book is very wordy, the author tends to use French and Italian phrases without translation. The book's cryptic explanations and definitions must be tediously read and re-read, since they do not appear to follow any pattern. Hughes is a pretentious attention seeker. This book is not for anyone outside art students.

        2 out of 5 stars Difficult reading........2001-10-03

I have read some past reviews on this book, and i am shocked to find that college students have been using this book for learning. I am currently in high school and my teacher is making us read this book. I find this book very hard to understand. If anyone has any information or quick summaries of this book i would appreciate it. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars More than an art book, by more than an art critic.......2000-11-09

I bought and read the first edition of this book after seeing the 1979 PBS series Hughes hosted, and I heartily recommend both book (which I still have) and the TV show if you can find it anywhere. Hughes' special brilliance is his ability to show the revolution in art at the turn of the 20th century as reacting to the revolution in technology and living standards and the rapid changes in every part of society -- the "shock" of this race to "newnesss" that really starting picking up speed a hundred years ago. Also unique and priceless is Hughes' puckish sense of humor and willingness to express an opinion - even a negative opinion - about art and architectural movements.

This is art history for the intelligent nonartist -- you will greatly enjoy it!
