We have bird feeders in our garden. They attract a large variety of birds and this terrific book identifies them for us. It also contains interesting information on the varying habits etc. as well as beautiful pictures of the different varietys.

We purchased this book as a supplement to our homeschool library prior to relocating from Georgia to Washington. We have not been disappointed.
My seven-year-old daughter has become a budding naturalist, thanks in part to these books. I can typically find this book on her nightstand - accompanied by a flashlight for late night reading!
The book is slim but hefty, with lovely sketches of both male and female examples of each bird. Color-coded maps show where the bird species can be found (and when) and a very thourough introduction gives information on the best birding sites, materials to gather prior to "birding" and excellent resources for further study.
My daughter would prefer photographs of the birds, but these are exceptionally beautiful drawings. This is in contrast to the smaller, less expensive "Golden Guides."

Excellent for PNW Newcomers.......2006-05-14
I moved to Washington a few months ago. Locating target birds has become a challenge in this new environment. The comprehensive continent-wide guides (sibley, peterson, golden, NG, etc...) are all wonderful, but are too vague when it comes to locating birds in a state with extremely diverse habitats (such as Washington!) This book has state range maps that are excellent, and I've found very accurate. Whereas the comprehensive guides give you mostly vital statistics about each bird, this guide has a different approach: There is usually a few interesting (and some obscure)facts about each bird. The artwork is nice, but if you're a visual learner, won't suffice for learning field marks so you'll have to supplement this book with another guide that has more artwork/photos. I've been birding for seven years now, and I find these new Lone Pine guides a breath of fresh air. They are easy to page through quickly, locally-oriented, and oddly enough have a really pleasant smell! They've also helped me become a better birder. I've used the Lone Pine Birds of Northern California guide as well while living in the SF Bay Area a couple years ago. I'd recommend this book for beginners and advanced birders. They really cover the bases that the other guides don't.

Birds of Seattle and Puget Sound is our most used identification source. We are beginners, and get confused with tomes which identify every bird in North America. This little book brings us the instant joy of identifying our flying guests while they are still at the feeder or bath. We appear to be "experts" to our house guests who marvel at the variety of birds visiting our yard.

This in an excellent book for the birds in this area. My 5 year old can identify all the birds in our backyard and can easily look up the new birds that come around. A must for parents who have children and birdfeeders.

No more sifting through field guides containing hundreds of birds you will never see around here. The authors of this book have limited their scope to the birds of this region. Many helpful illustrations and charts help a beginner with identification. I plan to use this book to assist Boy Scouts with their Bird Studies Merit Badge

But the biggest potential coincidence of all is a horrific one, when Margaret is pushed overboard into the icy Alaskan waters. The only witness to the murder is an Alzheimer's victim. But when Beau starts poking around (after mistaken identity issue number two, in which the captain conveniently assumes he's an FBI agent), he discovers that Harrison was himself the target of a conservative medical ethics group with a deadly agenda. As the ship moves slowly amidst the icebergs, Beau finds out that there's a lot hidden under these particular waters.
When Jance concentrates on the mechanics of her story, this Beaumont novel is perfectly entertaining. But when she strives for sentiment (or humor), her style tends toward an aw-shucks ham-handedness. Here's Beau talking about his partner, killed by an abusive ex-husband: "Her sons are orphans, and no amount of psychobabble from Dr. Majors is going to change that. No amount of talking it over and 'getting it out of my system' will alter the fact that Sue won't be there to see her boys graduate from high school or college. She'll never be the mother of the groom at a wedding or have the chance to cradle a newborn grandchild in her arms." This really wasn't my most favorite books by Jance.
JP Beaumont, retired detective, or so he thinks, is on an Alaskan cruise ship, The Starfire Breeze. He went also for the purpose of watching over his elder grandparents, Lars and Beverly Piedmont.
When Margaret Featherman is pushed overboard by an anonymous killer on the ship, the troubles begin. JP tries to unravel what has happened, and in the next few days after another death occurs with an Alzheimer's patient, Mike Conyers. These two events are seemingly unrelated, as Lucy Conyers was tired of caring for her ailing husband, and JP suspects she pushed him off the train they were on to put her husband out of his misery as well as herself.
JP tries to solve the mystery, while calling in his two detective friends from the FBI to help. Margaret Featherman reappears again, but soon as she does, more danger is lurking around the corner when she is found not to have drowned at all, but is very much alive.
I find the climax, (a very weak one), disappointing in the end. It was boring at the beginning, got a bit better in the middle when Naomi, another suspect comes into the picture and whom JP falls in love with, actually, but then the plot just dies from there and is not exciting at all. I've read other books that were better.
Definately not on par with other J.A. Jance novels.......2006-03-29
Boring!! I was disappointed. In fact, I disliked it so much, I only finished about 3/4 of the book. That is very uncommon for me as I alway push through as I want to give the author a chance to turn it around. I just could not do it with this book.
Decent but Different.......2005-09-20
I've read this book a couple times and it really isn't Jance's best. Actually it doesn't even come close. Beaumont, the main character is still present but that's where the similarities to a lot of the other books really end. I do have to recognize the author's talent in capturing a cruise along the inside passage from Seattle to Alaska. Jance did a great job of portraying the sites and sounds of the cruise as well as some of the little cities along the trip. Overall though it was not enough to make up for the struggling storyline that this novel provides. As a long time fan of Beau and Jance I know I will probably read this book again, just probably not in the near future.
Disappointing to say the least!.......2004-11-05
If you are an avid Jance fan and have come to like and expect fast-paced action and lots of excitement from the "Beaumont" books, don't buy this one. I usually can't quit reading a Beaumont book. I've stayed up well past my bedtime on many, many, many occasions because I just couldn't put the book down. I will usually spend hours reading the whole book in one setting. But this book.....well, it just doesn't cut it. I've started and stopped it on several occasions to read something else and only came back to it when I needed "filler" reading. For one thing, several characters have undergone major personality changes. Beverly, who was previously sort of a mousy, quiet, obedient character has suddenly become fiesty and mouthy and full of independence. And I scarcely recognized Lars. And the plot is too contrived and the whole Kiksadi, Quicksady, Quixote thing is really stupid. If this is the first Beaumont book you've read, please read some of the older books. You will enjoy them. But don't read this one.
Praying for More.......2004-09-27
J.A. Jance has assembled a very formulaic, almost made-for-tv suspense story. If Jim Rockford had been willing to go on a cruise to Alaska, this thin story could have been filmed thirty years ago.
The characters are stereotypical and the whole plot revolves around clumsy situations of mistaken identity. The protanganist is Beau Beaumont, straight from central casting, a washed-out police detective, who lost his partner and two wives, but appears to be winning a battle with sobriety.
Unfortunately for the reader, but perhaps fortunately for Beau, he agrees to chaperone his ancient grandparents on a cruise. Of course, the trip includes stops in places where his grandfather had fished commercially 50 years ago, and old friends are found on every street corner. Next a murder occurs on the ship, but it is not really a murder, as another of Beau's new forty-something friends seems to have aquatic abilities, on a par with Mark Spitz, and finds her way to safety.
Of course this thing is full to the brim with tales of adultry, jealousy, new love, dementia, substance abuse, domestic abuse, right-wing conspiracy, and seasickness, much of which happened many years ago, or is totally irrelevant to the plot.
Birds of Prey might be suitable for very light beach reading, especially if you have a lot of kids to watch and find it difficult to concentrate, as this does not require much effort. By the middle of the book, you will have it figured out, and be wondering what is taking Beau and Jance so long to wrap it up.

Introductory chapters describe bird habitats of Washington and changes in status and distribution since the publication of the landmark 1953 book Birds of Washington State. Unlike many other state bird books, this volume relates changes in the avian population to the effects of human population, habitat modification, and natural events, and identifies current threats such as forest practices, farming, fishing, irrigation, and waste management.
While establishing a benchmark for future studies, Birds of Washington provides an indispensable source of information on avian life in the state for a broad audience of birders, wildlife biologists, land managers, conservationists, hunters, and wildlife enthusiasts in general.

Is this a field guide?.......2005-12-06
No, it's not and it's not supposed to be. It's a desk reference. It gives status and distribution details for the 483 species documented in Washington. Extensive data on occurrence including noteworthy records are provided for all species. Most accounts also include phenology bar graphs (sometimes broken down regionally) and a distribution map. Distribution maps show breeding, and non-breeding ranges. Some accounts also include brief habitat descriptions and additional remarks on identification, ecology and historical changes in status.
Ahead of the species accounts are several sections detailing how the book is laid out, discussions on habitat, avian conservation and "the evolution of field ornithology in Washington".
There is no doubt that wildlife specialists will find this reference useful for quick and authoritative information on what species occur and where. It is unfortunately rather skimpy on the kind ecological details that connect bird species firmly to niches within habitats. The habitat details that are provided are inconsistently applied and usually limited to generalized ecotypes and brief descriptions of nest sites. Those charged with making resource management decisions that depend on more detailed information regarding ecological requirements will be obliged to look elsewhere. Obviously, content choices were made to keep the size and cost of the book within reason, but I would have preferred less discussion on how firm the status of the species is county by county and more discussion on what attracts a bird to a habitat and how it interacts with its environment. County status is a geopolitical constraint that has almost nothing to do with bird distribution.
Avocational naturewatchers may find the county by county detail of the range maps and phenology bar graphs useful, but the minutia on occurrences will probably not be of much use to birders.

The Inside Passage is alive and well and teeming with all manner of dolphins, whales, seals, and otter; loons, grebes, coots, and hawks; plus a scintillating variety of fishes, invertebrates, and seaweed. This 1,000-mile-long glacier-carved waterway stretches from Puget Sound in the south to the fjords of Juneau in Alaska, past strings of islands and coastal terrain that ranges from rocky beaches and tide pools to marshes and rainforests. The abundance of wildlife is magnificent, an unending joyous sensory experience of sight, sound, smell, and touch, there for the delectation of every kayaker, tide-pooler, birder, hiker, whale watcher, and casual passerby. The enjoyment can be increased, however, with Marine Wildlife from Puget Sound Through the Inside Passage. Without such a worthy guide, all you know is that you saw a bunch of birds, and you think some of them were ducks. You see birds in greater detail, however, when you're checking for the orange throat patch that distinguishes the double-crested cormorant from the pelagic or Brant's cormorant.
And as it goes for birds, so goes it for seals and sea lions, bread crumb sponges and boring sponges, and a vast array of fishes, from soles and sculpins to greenlings and poachers. The black-and-white illustrations and short but precise descriptions provided by Steve Yates are helpful in distinguishing anemones (brooding, green, plumed, and elegant), jellyfishes (lion's mane and moon jelly), flatworms and lugworms, spaghetti worms and tube worms, plus limpets, periwinkles, nudibranches, and all manner of clams, mussels, oysters, and so on. I certainly qualify as a layperson when it comes to this subject, but Yates has created a book which is wonderfully informative and easy to use. The descriptions and drawings of each of the species included in this book help in identification, but what I found most interesting was all the wonderful information about the animals themselves. I liked it so well I bought one for my mom, too!
Puget Sound Wildlife Guide is Outstanding.......2000-04-21
After taking a community college course on Life in the Intertidal Zone, and acquiring in the process a copy of Kozloff's book on the subject, I felt marginally equipped to take my elementary students to local beaches to identify invertebrates. A partner acquainted me with this book by Yates, and I've found it to be an excellent source of line drawings for students to use as they classify or sort invertebrates either on site, or in the classroom. It is especially valuable for its notes on each animal, since they are succinct, clear, and comprehensive for their brevity. I heartily recommnend this book for anyone who loves to prowl the tidelands of the sound to observe the variety of wildlife found here. Teachers, take note, this one is worth purchasing and sharing with your students!
