5 out of 5 stars Simple, clear, and to the point.......1999-03-06

This text makes the basic principles behind genetics very understandable. There are short questions integrated into the text itself in addition to questions at the end of each chapter just to make sure you understand before moving on. It's very difficult to get lost in the information due to this fact. All questions are answered fully and completely at the back of the book, as opposed to short one word answers that don't explain why the reader may have gotten a question right or wrong. Highly recommended.

    Book Description

This Basic Concepts title sheds light on the most elusive concepts in embryology and does so in a concise, lively manner. The level of detail is geared directly to that which is required by students in a way which esily accesses the most relevant information. The book utilizes jargon-free language and innovative teaching techniques to promote an understanding of concepts--not just the rote memorization of facts. To further enhance comprehension, text and illustrations accompany each other on the same or facing pages.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clear excellent overview of embryology.......2005-01-21

If you are looking for a clearly presented explanation of the concepts of embryology this book is an excellent choice. While embryology is a complex subject, many of the standard texts and treatises unnecessarily obscure the topic by using verbose and obtuse prose. The author uses direct and relatively straightforward text that makes it much easier to learn about this fascinating subject.

3 out of 5 stars Good for class Not for Boards.......2004-12-03

This book offers a very detailed explanation of embryology in an easy to read format. It breaks embryo out of the 1960s format that our medical school taught in, but it is too much information for the boards. Embryo is good for cardio and GI and this book would be a good reference but don't use it for boards. You would be better off with High Yield.

4 out of 5 stars Basic Concepts in Embryology: A Student's Survival Guide.......2000-02-27

This book is extremely helpful as a supplement to textbook readings. It definitely meets the objective of placing the primary concepts UP FRONT! Using this book, I was better able to focus my study, prepare for exams, and drastically improve my grade. I feel this book works best as a supplement, due to very recent advances in embryological study that are not included in this book.

    Book Description

BASIC CONCEPTS IN BIOLOGY supplies a 650 page, introductory issues-oriented approach with enormous instructional power. This title has content identical to Starr's longer BIOLOGY, CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, Sixth Edition, except for the omission of plant and animal physiology. The "Impacts, Issues" and "How Would You Vote?" features new to this edition make biology come alive. An "Impacts, Issues" case study opens each chapter focusing on a biology-related societal issue. Short films that expand on the issue are on the free Student CD. Each chapter's "How Would You Vote?" asks students to consider biology-related news, apply knowledge, cast a vote on the web and see voting tallies. With the updated edition, the 1pass code that accompanies all new copies provide online access to 1) BiologyNow, a learning tool that helps students assess their unique study needs through pretests, post-test and personalized learning plans; 2) InfoTrac, a library of full text articles; 3) vMentor, a live tutoring service and 4) "How Do I Prepare," a feature that allows students to review basic math, chemistry, and other skills that will help them more easily master introductory biology. In addition the updated edition also offers a new InfoMark online Reader which contains pre-selected relevant articles that pair with the content presented. This allows instructors to find outside readings in just one click. Plus a new appendix that contains an Annotated Journal Article shows students how researchers develop and analyze their research.

    Book Description

Natural computing brings together nature and computing to develop new computational tools for problem solving; to synthesize natural patterns and behaviors in computers; and to potentially design novel types of computers. Fundamentals of Natural Computing: Basic Concepts, Algorithms, and Applications presents a wide-ranging survey of novel techniques and important applications of nature-based computing. This book presents theoretical and philosophical discussions, pseudocodes for algorithms, and computing paradigms that illustrate how computational techniques can be used to solve complex problems, simulate nature, explain natural phenomena, and possibly allow the development of new computing technologies. The author features a consistent and approachable, textbook-style format that includes lucid figures, tables, real-world examples, and different types of exercises that complement the concepts while encouraging readers to apply the computational tools in each chapter. Building progressively upon core concepts of nature-inspired techniques, the topics include evolutionary computing, neurocomputing, swarm intelligence, immunocomputing, fractal geometry, artificial life, quantum computing, and DNA computing. Fundamentals of Natural Computing is a self-contained introduction and a practical guide to nature-based computational approaches that will find numerous applications in a variety of growing fields including engineering, computer science, biological modeling, and bioinformatics.

          Book Description

This book covers very basic number handling techniques, regression analysis, probability functions, statistical tests and methods of analyzing dynamic processes from flow cytometry data. These are developed for the analysis of not only individual DNA histograms to obtain the proportion of cells in the cell cycle phases, but also time courses of DNA histograms to yield cell cycle kinetic information; overlapping immunofluorescence distributions with confidence limits for the estimated proportions; enzyme kinetic and membrane transport parameters and a brief introduction to multivariate analysis is given. A distinction is made between data handling, for example gating and counting the numbers of cells within that gate, a process commonly regarded as data analysis but which, in reality, is data handling, and data analysis itself which is the means by which information is extracted.

Giving students a needed ally in learning the difficult concepts in cell biology and histology is the single goal of this concise text. In typical "Basic Concepts" fashion, the subject is treated with maximum emphasis on demystifying basic science topics using analogy, charts and algorithms, clinical examples, mnemonics and other proven teaching methods. Organized from simple to more complicated concepts, students will enjoy the uniquely lucid review of cell biology including cell membranes, intracellular trafficking, signal conduction, mitosis and meiosis, cell motility, and more. Histology is also reviews, starting with epithelium and junctional complexes, connective tissue, muscle, and a system-by-system review of cell structure.

I had to have this book for a college "Intro to Biology" and it was great. The book has a lot of information that I needed for class. It was easy to read, which was really great since I had a full class load. There are also really good diagrams and pictures to illustrate the examples and concepts from the book.

          5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!.......2002-01-12
