Great Book.......2007-09-24
Required to have this book for a graduate class, but find it is written clearly, in a logical sequence, and covers a wide range of facts. Highly recommend for any behavior analyst.
Behavior Book for Study purpose.......2007-05-20
I bought this book about a month and a half ago. I enrolled in FIt and are doing the behavior analysis course. This book is VERY helpfull for extra examples and the writing is easy to understand. Great book to read if you are interested in human behavior and the processes involved in human behavior. Espacially if you are using it for school purposes.
Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Ed).......2007-03-12
It was well worth getting the 2nd edition of this book. The feature of matching the content to the tests will be a great study aid for the exam. Also, the current research and added information was very beneficial. If you have the first edition of the text it is well worth the money to get the more current edition.
Great Book!.......2007-03-12

Book Description
This market-leading book provides comprehensive coverage of behavior management concepts and techniques and presents them in a versatile and practical manner for teachers.
This new edition has been shortened and streamlined and chapters flow step-by-step through an actual behavior analysis, using classroom-based examples and practices firmly grounded in research. Content is presented in the order of decision-making by: 1) a teacher who has a student exhibiting challenging behavior in class; or, 2) a student who needs to execute a behavior-change project. The text covers: identifying target behavior, collecting and graphing data, functional assessment, experimental design, arranging antecedents and consequences, generalizing behavior change and discusses the importance of ethical considerations in using applied behavior analysis in the classroom.
Inservice Teachers and Special Educators.
Customer Reviews:
For Advanced Study.......2007-10-01
I am currently taking a Graduate Level Advanced Behavior Analysis (ABA) class at a local university. This book was a requirement for my class and this class is required for graduation. This class was my first Special Education course and this book is definitely not for someone who doesn't understand reward/punishment with regards to behavior. The book is comprehensive but should not be used for someone looking to "gain a little insight" into ABA. This book encompasses all of ABA. If you are ABA certified, this book will help you "refresh" on the information you've already learned.
Good for Special Educators.......2007-03-08
I had to buy this textbook last year, as I was getting my teaching endorsement in Special Education. It is a good text, although mostly only useful if you are studying this for ceritification (I haven't used since I've been teaching).
Teach yourself to teach kids!.......2006-07-20
This detailed how to book offers a variety of technical interventions and some neccessary theory surrounding Applied Behavior Analysis. It also presents a variety of explanations and examples for classroom use. I really enjoyed the read and highly recommend it. My students also found it usefull!
For learning about ABA and relating to school you cannot beat this book..........2006-05-13
My title states it all. The 7th edition trumps the phenomenal 6th edition in it's inclusion of IDEA 2004/NCLB concepts. It is well worth the price difference between this book and most ABA books.
technical lingo.......2006-03-17
The only thing I really did not like about this book was it had a lot of technical verbage that tends to put one to sleep. The examples and scenarios were helpful in presenting the content.

Behavior Analysis for Lasting Change.......2006-05-08
This text deals with methods and stragegies of analyzing and modifying behaviors. Within the text I specifically focused on chapter nine through twelve which involved increasing behavior through the use of positive reinforcement. I also give special attention to chapters twenty-four and twenty-five dealing with decreasing behaviors incompatible with underisable behavior, and to a lesser extent the use of punishment. Mastery of these tools will enable teachers to effectively deal with most of the situations faced in today's classroom.
Best summary of Applied Behavior Analysis.......2006-02-24
If you want to change things, you always have to take human behavior into account. Behavior analysis is the science that does this very precisely. It helps you to measure and to change the behaviors of yourself and others for getting the results that you want.
The book of Beth Sulzer-Azaroff en Roy Mayer gives an excellent summary of the way behavior can be changed succesfully. It tells you how to measure behavior, how to increase desirable behavior, how to decrease undesirable behavior and how to extend and maintain behavior.
If you really want to understand behavior and concrete tools to change it, you should read this book.

Vital book for school change and responsiveness to change.......2000-01-17
This book is essential for anyone seriously considering a role of leadership in schools or districts. In the book, the reader learns about excellent and practical science to make schools a better place. There is not a topic that isn't covered. All of the practical issues are present. Yes, the book uses the language of very good behavioral sciences, and that is appropriate. With all the headline things that have happened in the world with schools, its important that major leaders in schools have good grounding in practical science of behavior change. What's really neat about the book is that almost everything in its is doable. You can make it happen. In my own landmark research on youth violence, I could not have done it without standing on the shoulders of giants like Beth Sulzer-Azaroff and G.Roy Mayer. Every future teacher or administrator has to have studied this book.

Book Description
She was a beautiful doelike child, with an intense, graceful fragility. In her first year, she picked up words, smiled and laughed, and learned to walk. But then Anne-Marie began to turn inward. And when her little girl lost some of the words she had acquired, cried inconsolably, and showed no interest in anyone around her, Catherine Maurice took her to doctors who gave her a devastating diagnosis: autism.
In their desperate struggle to save their daughter, the Maurices plunged into a medical nightmare of false hopes, "miracle cures," and infuriating suggestions that Anne-Marie's autism was somehow their fault. Finally, Anne-Marie was saved by an intensive behavioral therapy.
Let Me Hear Your Voice is a mother's illuminating account of how one family triumphed over autism. It is an absolutely unforgettable book, as beautifully written as it is informative.
"A vivid and uplifting story . . . Offers new strength to parents who refuse to give up on their autistic children." -- Kirkus Reviews
"Outstanding . . . Heartfelt . . . A lifeline to families in similar circumstances." -- Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
helpful but.......2007-07-11
I know aba does wonders for some forms of autism and I know this book has been a big part of getting the word out.
Like the author I have three kids though my son's autism was present from birth. One theme that is a huge issue for many families and was absent from the book: lack of resources. We are a middle class family with one car living in a fixer-upper and debt. And compared to many we do very well. Her senario of having a nanny and paying out of pocket for lots of therapy are way way beyond our means. Our insurance does not cover any therapy and they run at $140 per hour. Anytime I work with my son I have to find & pay someone to watch my twin toddlers. This runs steep pretty fast and her descriptions of traveling, affording 20+ hours a week of kid therapy, seeing scores of doctors (a one-time evaluation by a neurologist costs 5 thousand dollars in our city) and having time for her own self and nannies just left me marveling. Most families affected by autism do struggle enourmously financially and logistically from day to day. And most kids are not as responsive as her kids were to the therapy.
I am very happy for her success and glad she is spreading the word on ABA but I think she misses how most families have to struggle with the basics .
AUTISM.......2007-04-12
THIS IS THE SECOND BOOK I READ AFTER MY GRANDSON WAS DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM. IT IS EXTREMELY WELL WRITTEN AND FILLED WITH INFORMATION ALL PARENTS/FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF A NEWLY DIAGNOSED AUTISTIC CHILD SHOULD KNOW. IT WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH A NEW SENSE OF HOPE AND DIRECTION TO FINDING AND PROVIDING THE BEST INTERVENTIONS/TREATMENTS TO RECOVER YOUR CHILD FROM AUTISM. I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND IT!
Fantastic. This is going to be required reading of new clients........2007-02-12
I am going to purchase this text for all new clients/parents who seek early intervention services I found this text so interesting, captivating, and enlightening, demonstrating a parent's perspective with the struggles of the diagnosis of a child's autism. Whether one agrees with her reaction or approach, she lays it all out in the open, exposing herself for others to learn from so that others may gain insight and perhaps learn. It also provides a good picture of what behavior modification is and how Applied Behavior Analysis works for those who have heard misinformation.
Interesting book.......2007-01-23
Tells a good story about a family's struggle. But please know, not all children benefit from ABA. Just my opinion, of course :-)
Giving children with autism a voice for effective treatment.......2006-11-29
As a professor and clincian trained in applied behavior analysis, I generally tell students that four major events profoundly affected the future outlook for children with autism: 1) The publication of Lovaas's 1987 study in which nearly half of children treated with an applied behavior analytic (ABA) program "recovered" (with a substantial additional number of children making substantial progress), 2) the publication of Cooper, Heron, and Heward's professional book "Applied Behavior Analysis," 3) the publication of Maurice's powerful book "Let Me Hear Your Voice," and 4) the founding of a standardized certification credential for professionals in behavior analysis by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. The first event (Lovaas's 1987 study) laid out the objective empirical evidence supporting the use of ABA with children with autism. The second (the Cooper et al book) described the thousands of evidence-based techniques and principles of learning that make up the science of ABA. The third event (the Maurice book) popularized the idea for many thousands of people that recovery from autism was possible and that there was a science-based treatment approach that could lead to such recovery. The fourth event (certification in ABA) came about, to a large extent, from the demand for ABA services generated by Maurice's book.
As "old" as Maurice's book is now, to date there are still no controlled peer-reviewed studies that have demonstrated the effectiveness of any of the alternative treatments for autism (many of which were described in Maurice's book). On the other hand, studies examining and confirming the effectiveness of ABA continue to appear in peer-reviewed scientific journals (most recently a replication of Lovaas's 1987 study by Sallows and Graupner in 2005 that found the same "recovery" rate of nearly half the children with autism that were treated). Despite this continued reliability of effectiveness, ABA is still attacked by its critics as "inhumane," "rigid," or something that generates "robotic children" even though there has never been a scrap of empirical evidence to support such mischaracterizations. ABA continues to be ignored by many school districts as the intervention of choice for autism despite its impressive track record. It continues to be naively derided by popular educational "advocates" such as Alfie Kohn (see his books "Punished By Rewards" and "Unconditional Parenting"). It continues to be denied funding from insurance companies who have no problem funding other less expensive non-evidence-based "treatments." Fortunately, Maurice is still fighting pseudoscience and advocating for science-based autism intervention through her work in the Association for Science in Autism Treatment, her speeches, and through her other books ("Behavior Intervention for Young Children with Autism" for example). She continues to inspire parents and professionals alike to do what is ethically right for our children: to teach them to speak, to teach them to love, to teach them to learn! so that THE CHILDREN have the tools to decide who they want to be and what they want to do in life. There can be no more noble endeavor than helping this happen for our kids.

Book Description
The US Dept. of Education, in conjunction with the US Dept. of Health and Human Services, recently unveiled a $50 million effort to expand research on early childhood cognitive development. A key issue identified requiring more information and research was the education and professional development of educators. Along these lines, Doug Greer has prepared a book discussing how best to teach, how to design functional curricula, and how to support teachers in using state-of-the-art science instruction materials.
The book provides important information both to trainers of future teachers, current teachers, and to supervisors and policy makers in education. To trainers there is information on how to motivate, mentor, and instruct in-service teachers to use the best scientifically based teaching strategies and tactics. To in-service teachers, there is information on how to provide individualized instruction in classrooms with multiple learning and behavior problems, school interventions to help prevent vandalism and truancy, and how curricula and instruction can be designed to teach functional repetoirs rather than inert ideas. To policy makers and supervisors, the book discusses how to determine the effectiveness of curricular innitiatives toward meeting mandated standards in national assessments.
Doug Greer was recently awarded the Fred S. Keller Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education by APA for the research and application of the material covered in this book. School programs incorporating the material used in this book have produced 4-7 times more learning outcomes for students than control and baseline educational programs (see www.cabas.com)
The book provides research-based and field-tested procedures for:
* Teaching students of all ability levels ranging from preschool to secondary school
* How to teach special education students in the context of a regular classroom
* Best practices for all teachers to teach more effectively
* Means of monitoring and motivating teachers' practices
* A comprehensive and system-wide science of teachingpost modern-postmodern!
* Tested procedures that result in four to seven times more learning for all
students
* Tested procedures for supervisors to use with teachers that result in
significant student learning
* Tested procedures for providing the highest accountability
* A systems approach for schooling problems that provide solutions rather
than blame
* Parent approved and parent requested educational practices
* Means for psychologists to work with teachers and students to solve
behavior and learning problems
* A comprehensive systems science of schooling
* An advanced and sophisticated science of pedagogy and curriculum design
* Students who are not being served with traditional education can meet or
exceed the performance of their more fortunate peers,
* Supervisors can mentor teachers and therapists to provide state of the
science instruction
* Parent education can create a professional setting for parents, educators,
and therapists to work together in the best interests of the student,
* Teachers and supervisors who measure as they teach produce significantly
better outcomes for students,
* Systemic solutions to instructional and behavioral problems involving
teachers, parents, supervisors provide means to pursue problems to their
solution,
* A science of teaching, as opposed to an art of teaching, can provide an
educational system that treats the students and the parents as the clients.

Designing Teching Strategies.......2007-03-18
SMART! Nicely written and very clear language. Public school systems could learn alot from this book!
Most important text since Cooper, Heron, & Heward.......2006-03-31
This text explains EXACTLY how to make the everyday practice of teaching with ABA work BEYOND the one-to-one home program for a single student. It is the most comprehensive extension of "what to do and how to do it" since Cooper, Heron, & Heward's "Applied Behavior Analysis."
What Dr. Greer dubs the "ABA Systems Approach" springs from the university informing comprehensive application of behavior analsyis to schooling settings (CABAS schools). However, the text can also stand indepenent of that special environment; and its contents are immediately applicable to individual practitioners in home and community settings.
Chapters summarize advances in practice and current research in verbal behavior; creating literacy and mathematics curricula for students who need ABA methodology to learn; and how to supervise other professionals in advancing their ABA and research skills.
Especially useful are tables that translate students' performance trouble into potential repertoires that may not be fully taught or reinforcement contingencies that may be lacking; and team actions that would remedy those problems.

A GREAT GUIDE TO DO ABA FROM HOME.......2007-09-01
This book is a very helpful resource for a parent to use to do ABA with their child. It gives clear objectives in every category and tells you how to assess your child's starting point. No need to spend all your $$$ on the professionals when you can teach yourself the same method they use with this book.
excellent resource guide.......2007-04-11
This book gives teacher's an excellent resource for what/how to teach autistic children.
Excellent help for writing goals.......2007-03-31
This book is a great resource. It's "what to teach" section is great for helping determine which skills to target and also gives a great hierarchy to skill mastery that is a "must have" when writing measurable goals.
Practical and user friendly.......2007-02-12
This manual will provide the user, whether parent or professional, with a sensical means to the academic substance of ABA. Take it one chapter at a time. This item is being used as a text for a BCABA program from a well recognized University in Boston, so its contents are obviously worth the work to implement.
GREAT!.......2007-01-12
This is a book that everyone should get if you work in the field or are a parent of a child with autism.

Book Description
Written for educators and school psychologists who regularly deal with children, this book provides detailed information about the procedures teachers have successfully used to obtain positive outcomes in their classrooms. The authors base their discussion on the growing body of experimental research conducted in the classroom designed to identify techniques that encourage productive, happy, caring, healthful, and skillful behavior from students. The procedures they represent are backed by solid scientific data and have achieved proven results in real world settings. The authors also provide a thorough grounding in the behavioral principles that underlie the procedures. They demonstrate the ways in which these principles, which have been formulated as a result of basic laboratory research, can be effectively applied to behavioral techniques in the classroom to better the lives of both students and teachers.

Customer Reviews:
The basics with Mathematical assessment all in one.......2007-06-08
I just received this product. Being it is the last week of the school year and I also am outfitting three ADA BATHROOMS for clients, I haven't had time to read it.
However, I did flip through it and the Verbal Behavior Analysis appears to be an excellent reference manual as it not only contains quantitative information, but myriads of qualitative assessments of results of behaviors, interventions and results.
Not having been a strong fan of statistics (even during my Undergrad Program in Business) and now as a Graduate Special Ed Student) I am amazed at how physical responses and traits can be interpreted in unbiased manners and strategies for intervention can be determined. And,
Verbal Behavior Analysis looks like it will fit that bill nicely.

Book Description
Discourse, Learning, and Schooling explores theoretical and methodological relationships between childrens' discourse--or socially used language--and their learning in educational settings. Authors in this volume address a range of issues, including literacy, authorship, the construction of self, and classroom interaction. The chapters range from research studies of classroom discourse to essays reflecting on discourse and literacies. Collectively these chapters reflect both sociocognitive perspectives on relations among discourse, learning, and schooling, and sociocultural perspectives on discourse and literacies among diverse cultural groups.
