Book Description
A Primer of Ecological Statistics explains fundamental material in probability theory and experimental design for ecologists and environmental scientists. The book emphasizes a general introduction to probability theory and provides a detailed discussion of specific designs and analyses that are typically encountered in ecology and environmental science. Appropriate for use as either a stand-alone or supplementary text for upper-division undergraduate or graduate courses in ecological and environmental statistics, ecology, environmental science, environmental studies, or experimental design, the Primer also serves as a resource for environmental professionals who need to use and interpret statistics daily but have little or no formal training in the subject.
The book is divided into three parts. Part I discusses the fundamentals of probability and statistical thinking. It introduces the logic and language of probability (Chapter 1), explains common statistical distributions used in ecology (Chapter 2) and important measures of central tendency and spread (Chapter 3), explains P-values, hypothesis testing, and statistical errors (Chapter 4), and introduces frequentist, Bayesian, and Monte Carlo methods of analysis (Chapter 5).
Part II discusses how to successfully design and execute field experiments and sampling studies. Topics include design strategies (Chapter 6), a "bestiary" of experimental designs (Chapter 7), and transformations and data management (Chapter 8).
Part III discusses specific analyses, and covers the material that is the main core of most statistics texts. Topics include regression (Chapter 9), analysis of variance (Chapter 10), categorical data analysis (Chapter 11), and multivariate analysis (Chapter 12).
The book includes a comprehensive glossary, a mathematical appendix on matrix algebra, and extensively annotated tables and figures. Footnotes introduce advanced and ancillary material: some are purely historical, others cover mathematical/statistical proofs or details, and still others address current topics in the ecological literature.

Absolutely the best intro stats book for ecologists.......2007-04-03
I'm a biologist and a writer. I am not a mathematician. This book presents a broad array of statistical concepts in a way that even I can understand. You won't have to reread paragraph after paragraph, because the text is completely straightforward. Don't expect to use this as your stand-alone statistics reference, but do expect to use it as a primary source for ecology-related techniques. A "must have" for all biologists.
A ripping yarn.......2007-03-27
Book arrive promptly and in excellent condition. It covers statisitcs for field ecologists in a clear and conscise manner. Worth the money.
Great book!.......2006-08-14
Great book, clean language. A good start for anyone who want to learn statistics and somenting else.
Primer is truly helpful.......2006-03-03
I have found this treatment of statistics unusually lucid and practical for the ecologist (or, I imagine, other scientist) desiring a better understanding of statistics and guidance in practical use of various types of statistical analysis. Unlike many statistical texts, it takes an almost conversational tone in explaining many concepts, using clear examples to illustrate various statistical approaches. While it is not as complete or detailed as larger statistical texts, it covers the fundamentals of most of the important tests and methods ecologists use on a day-to-day basis. One area of weakness is the treatment of classical non-parametric analyses, which Gotelli trades in entirely for Bayesian or Monte Carlo methods.
All in all, a very useful book for an aspiring ecologist to have on his or her bookshelf.
Statistics for people with muddy boots.......2005-04-05
I was delighted with this book, because it fits some of my own prejudices about statistics!
We agree that the mechanics of statistical analysis are not the most important part of statistics for ecological studies. After all, for the last couple of decades the brunt of this has been borne by computers and software engineers. Much more important is that researchers understand what the computer output means. And Gotelli and Ellison devote most of their book to this.
Too many people collect data, then try to work out how to analyse it and what conclusions to draw. It's better to decide on the research question right at the start, then decide what kind of analysis is appropriate, and then what numbers you need to collect. The main part of this book is about this study design process.
In addition to the conventional frequentist approach, the book introduces Monte Carlo methods and Bayesian thinking. (I was interested to see that they reject non-parametric methods out of hand, recommending the use of Monte Carlo methods instead.) Moreover, they deal with parameter estimation and model building as well as hypothesis testing.
Written by ecologists for ecologists, it is remarkably clear and easy to read. You don't need much math to be able to follow the arguments, and numerical examples are there. (I for one can't cope with too much algebra; I need to see some numbers slotted in and results come out.) The final chapter is an exception, as it uses matrix algebra, but there's enough explanation of this in an appendix. Remember that the number crunching will be done by your statistical package: it will probably do things right if you ask it to do the right things, and this book is a guide to the right things to do with your data.

Book Description
A Primer of Ecology, Third Edition, presents a concise but detailed exposition of the most common mathematical models in population and community ecology. It is intended to demystify ecological models and the mathematics behind them by deriving the models from first principles. The book may be used as a self-teaching tutorial by students, as a primary textbook, or as a supplemental text to a general ecology textbook.
The Primer explains in detail basic concepts of exponential and logistic population growth, age-structured demography, metapopulation dynamics, competition, predation, island biogeography, and, in a chapter new to this edition, succession. Each chapter is carefully graded from simple material that is appropriate for beginning undergraduates to advanced material, which is suited for upper-division undergraduates and beginning graduate students. Advanced topics include environmental and demographic stochasticity, discrete population growth and chaos, stage-structured demography, intraguild predation, nonlinear predator-prey isoclines, and passive sampling. Each chapter follows the same structure: model presentation and predictions, model assumptions, model variations, empirical examples, and problems.
Essential equations are highlighted for students' use. Intermediate algebraic "expressions" are also illustrated so that students see where the equations came from. New terms are introduced in the text in boldface type to alert students to novel concepts. The Primer contains more mathematical detail than many ecology textbooks, but avoids jargon and mathematical terminology that can intimidate students. Both simple and advanced problems are included, followed by fully worked solutions so that students can gain confidence and a better understanding of the models. Citations are kept to a minimum.

The book I ordered was in perfect condition and I received it very quickly!! I've always had excellent service from Amazon.com!
Excelent book.......2005-10-12
This book is an excelent work on population biology, it includes the basic elements to study the dynamics of population in nature, I recomend it.
Great book for beginners and advanced........2005-09-24
Gotelli has done a great job with this book. He explains most things concisely as well as thoroughly. He not only mentions the concepts, but the people and events leading to the discovery of those concepts. This can be a rare thing in textbooks. The only complaint I have is that he doesn't always explain the derivations of his equations, he just wants us to trust him on them. Other than that, a great book on Ecology for its size.
Easily one of the best on the topic.......2003-06-23
Four and one half stars.
Dr. Gotelli's book is the most successful which I am familiar at "demystifying" the mathematical concepts in ecology. "A primer of ecology" is very well organized and written so as not to frighten off the uninitiated, but covers the mathematics well enough to be an adequate refresher for those that have slipped in some areas. The inclusion of ecological succession in the 3rd edition is an important addition and not merely a reason to put out a new version. I highly recommend this text to anyone who is interested in learning about ecological study, and I think it would make an excellent senior undergraduate or supplemental graduate text.
Easy to understand, but simplifies a little too much.......2002-05-11
I found this book was a really good introduction to the subject - really clearly explained and laid out, unlike some other books I have read, which start of simple and then suddenly leap off into degree-level maths! However, it does tend to simplify a little bit (would have liked a little more information on the types of discrete and continous logistics that can be used).
All in all a really good book to buy to keep your feet on the ground when learning
Book Description
Introducing Biological Rhythms is a primer that serves to introduce individuals to the area of biological rhythms. It describes the major characteristics and discusses the implications and applications of these rhythms, while citing scientific results and references. Also, the primer includes essays that provide in-depth historic and other background information for those interested in more specific topics or concepts.
It covers a basic cross-section of the field of chronobiology clearly enough so that it can be understood by a novice, or an undergraduate student, but that it would also be sufficiently technical and detailed for the scientist.

Book Description
In this book, eco-agriculture is explained from the tiniest molecular building blocks to managing the soil in terminology that not only makes the subject easy to learn, but vibrantly alive. Eco-Farm truly delivers a complete education in soils, crops, and weed and insect control.
Chapters provide detailed discussions of trace elements, tillage, the N,P&K concept, animal health, crops, soil carbon and calcium, insects, soil life, crop rotation, and much more.
This should be the first book read by everyone beginning in eco-agriculture . . . and the most shop-worn book on the shelf of the most experienced.

Sense not nonsense.......2007-07-23
I left college full of scientific knowledge and spent thirty years amending that with experience. Though I cannot subscribe to Steiner's Bio-dynamics I do follow sustainable farming techniques - those thirty years have taught me something. In this primer, that has been distilled and laid out clearly and without preaching as many "eco" texts do.
An excellent essay on conservative farming, blending the agro-science with eco-science.
Eco-Farm.......2006-08-09
If only every person that ever eats food read this book as a set work at school, the level of intelligence across the literate world would double. No longer would advertising companies have such a gullible audience. No longer would the medical and medical insurance industry have such a ready customer base.
And most of all, the customer of the farmer/producer would not tolerate the practices in industrial agriculture, and in turn, small farmers would not be trying to ape their "big brothers"
Rough but Ready.......2006-06-05
I agree with the previous reviewer - that Charles Walters is a bit condescending, but we allow this to genius in any other discipline. The book is billed as "the definitive guide to managing farm and ranch soil fertility etc..." But this book is not a technician's handbook about farming, it is a primer for a massive paradigm shift in the way we look at the entire eco-sphere, about our estrangement from the soil from which we derive our "permission for life" - and about a milieu of degenerative disease which necessarily flows from such a tragic estrangement.
Part of Walter's arrogance is really just conviction. It is the utter conviction of a Socrates or a Copernicus or an Einstein, who will brook no humility about truth. A sociopath does not a prophet make, but a true prophet will always be marginalized as one by the sociological institution from which he speaks. And this is because institutional science, "tries to harmonize the latest discoveries with the incongruities of its false position."
Paradigm shift is not fun. It is adventurous, but painful. No one looks for the painful adventure until the pain of institutional inertia becomes unbearable. Walters himself proposes a paradigm shift of such massive proportions that it quite exceeds his own modest proposals. Unless our agronomy exceeds the righteousness of the "environmental movement" we will never see symbiosis in our generation.
The best source on caring for the soil I have ever read!.......1997-07-18
Even though the beginning of the book has a slightly arrogant writing style, it is the best book on sustainable agriculture I have ever read. It is filled with the science behind the claims that, although complex, is easy to understand. It will make converts of even the most chemically dependent gardener or farmer if they have an open mind going in. It truely is THE organic primer Bible

A Primer Of Ecological Statistics
ASIN: 0471832359 |
Book Description
An accessible introduction to quantitative methods in community ecology, with related software. Provides a thoughtful overview on the nature of data collection, followed by detailed explanations of the major statistical techniques applied to problems in population dynamics. Presents important conclusions about the use (and abuse) of specific techniques. Examples include communities of both flora and fauna, prey-predator relations, the effects of food supply on populations, and species abundance and overlap models. Software includes several BASIC microcomputer programs which can be used with the examples provided or with other data sets.
Customer Reviews:
Statistical Ecology, Tremendous Text, Poor Software.......1999-01-15
Statistical Ecology was easy to interpret. Examples made this book excellent.
The book comes with a disk containing BASIC programs. This is of little help for individuals having win 95/98. The BASIC interpreter, mentioned in the primer, was terminated when Windows 95 replaced MSDOS as the OS for PCs.
So if you have win95/98 you are BASICally hosed.
I would suggest the authors correct the compatibility problem, or just not offer BASIC programs.
Book Description
This book covers basic concepts in population and quantitative genetics, including measuring selection on phenotypic traits. The emphasis is on material applicable to field studies of evolution focusing on ecologically important traits. Topics addressed are critical for training students in ecology, evolution, conservation biology, agriculture, forestry, and wildlife management.
Many texts in this field are too complex and mathematical to allow the average beginning student to readily grasp the key concepts. A Primer of Ecological Genetics, in contrast, employs mathematics and statisticsfully explained, but at a less advanced levelas tools to improve understanding of biological principles. The main goal is to enable students to understand the concepts well enough that they can gain entry into the primary literature. Integration of the different chapters of the book shows students how diverse concepts relate to each other.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to Understand Textbook.......2006-11-06
This is a great textbook that could easily be used in any evolution or genetics class. It clearly describes issues like evolution and natural selection in the context of ecological genetics. The examples are interesting and stay in the reader's mind, and the problem sets and online answers are a great resource. This book also serves as a handy reference guide anytime you need to find a formula or definition. It's appropriate for upper level undergraduate courses or introductory graduate courses.
Excellent overview of ecological genetics!.......2005-04-29
I am a graduate student studying behavioral ecology. I have taken courses in ecological genetics and evolutionary ecology. Most professors don't use a text book of any sort when teaching on these topics. This book is an excellent reference for learning the fundamentals about these topics. It includes current and classic examples from the primary literature as well as a carefully constructed glossary of terms. I highly recommend this resource to both professors teaching courses to upper level undergraduates and graduate students!

Book Description
One of the great debates of our time concerns the predominant form of land use in America today - the all too familiar pattern of commercial and residential development known as sprawl. But what do we really know about sprawl? Do we know what it is? Where did it come from? Is it really so bad? If so, what are the alternatives? Can anything be done to make it better? The Limitless City offers an accessible examination of those and related questions. Oliver Gillham, an architect and planner with more than twenty-five years of experience in the field, considers the history and development of sprawl and examines current debates about the issue. The book:
- offers a comprehensive definition of sprawl in America
- traces the roots of sprawl and considers the factors that led to its preeminence as an urban and suburban form
- reviews both its negative impacts (loss of open space, increased pollution, gridlock) as well as its positive aspects (economic development, personal freedom, privacy)
- considers responses to sprawl including "smart growth," urban growth boundaries, regional planning, and the New Urbanism
- looks at what can be done to improve and counterbalance sprawl
The author argues that whether we like it or not, sprawl is here to stay, and only by understanding where it came from and why it developed will we be able to successfully address the problems it has created and is likely to create in the future. The Limitless City is the first book to provide a realistic look at sprawl, with a frank recognition of its status as the predominant urban form in America, now and into the near future. Rather than railing against it, Gillham charts its probable future course while describing critical efforts that can be undertaken to improve the future of sprawl and our existing urban core areas.
Customer Reviews:
somewhat balanced, unlike most books on the subject.......2004-01-16
The best and most unusual thing about this book is that it is more balanced than most: while most sprawl-related books are pure attacks or defenses (or are too superficial to adequately cover either side of the argument), Gillham gives a significant amount of space to the arguments, counter-arguments and counter-counter arguments on both sides (though on balance he is definitely more antisprawl than not). In addition, the book covers a wider range of issues than many sprawl related books; instead of being focused on quality of life issues (like most New Urbanist books are) or on environmental issues, Gillham goes into both. Also, Gillham discusses the political lineups on sprawl related issues: who's for changing the status quo, who defends sprawl and why.
The Limitless City.......2002-04-30
This book delivers a thorough, unbiased and thoughtful approach to the problem of sprawl. The issues are clearly defined and the myths debunked when necessary. After reading this book, one feels that the problems and potential solutions can be grasped. The writing is clear, and concise and draws the reader through the complexities of the issues.
