Book Description
The first authorized inside account of one of the most daring—and successful—military operations in recent history
From the earliest days of his dictatorship, Saddam Hussein had vowed to destroy Israel. So when France sold Iraq a top-of-the-line nuclear reactor in 1975, the Israelis were justifiably concerned—especially when they discovered that Iraqi scientists had already formulated a secret program to extract weapons-grade plutonium from the reactor, a first critical step in creating an atomic bomb. The reactor formed the heart of a huge nuclear plant situated twelve miles from Baghdad, 1,100 kilometers from Tel Aviv. By 1981, the reactor was on the verge of becoming “hot,” and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin knew he would have to confront its deadly potential. He turned to Israeli Air Force commander General David Ivry to secretly plan a daring surgical strike on the reactor—a never-before-contemplated mission that would prove to be one of the most remarkable military operations of all time.
Written with the full and exclusive cooperation of the Israeli Air Force high command, General Ivry (ret.), and all of the eight mission pilots (including Ilan Ramon, who become Israel’s first astronaut and perished tragically in the shuttle Columbia disaster), Raid on the Sun tells the extraordinary story of how Israel plotted the unthinkable: defying its U.S. and European allies to eliminate Iraq’s nuclear threat. In the tradition of Black Hawk Down, journalist Rodger Claire re-creates a gripping tale of personal sacrifice and survival, of young pilots who trained in the United States on the then-new, radically sophisticated F-16 fighter bombers, then faced a nearly insurmountable challenge: how to fly the 1,000-plus-kilometer mission to Baghdad and back on one tank of fuel. He recounts Israeli intelligence’s incredible “black ops” to sabotage construction on the French reactor and eliminate Iraqi nuclear scientists, and he gives the reader a pilot’s-eye view of the action on June 7, 1981, when the planes roared off a runway on the Sinai Peninsula for the first successful destruction of a nuclear reactor in history.

"Rodger Claire handles a complex story with ease and assurance. Infused with an understanding of the pilots and their historical mission, Raid on the Sun illustrates how what they achieved for Israel was as vital as that earlier flight of the Enola Gay to Hiroshima to end World War Two. Claire has created a patient, scrupulous story that still unfolds with the pace and verve of a thriller. Don't wait for the movie of the book. Buy it now."
GORDON THOMAS, AUTHOR OF
GIDEON'S SPIES: MOSSAD'S SECRET WARRIORS
"Raid on the Sun is an extraordinary look into the most secret, and perhaps the finest, air force on the planet. It is also a blistering indictment of the international arms industry that sells modern weapons to anyone with money. Raid on the Sun is required reading for everyone in the age of terror."
STEPHEN COONTS, AUTHOR OF FLIGHT OF THE INTRUDER
"A stunning eye-opener, shocking you with the realization of the enormous service the Israeli Air Force rendered the free world with its 1981 attack on Saddam Hussein's nuclear facility. Claire went right to the source—the Israeli pilots who flew the mission—to tell in colorful detail the full story of this historic strike."

RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION!" "THIS COULD BE THE BLUE PRINT FOR IRAN!".......2007-06-16
I'm sure you've heard the phrase: "I COULDN'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN, AND READ IT COVER TO COVER!" This book for me defined that, and if there really is a dictionary, (With famous phrases.) with the proverbial picture next to it, this book should be next to that phrase! This "TRUE" story, written over twenty years after the unbelievable Israeli bombing mission to destroy Iraq's nuclear facility, is too fantastic to believe. Why, was this in depth story never told before you may ask? Because Israel refused to talk about it, or release classified information. But now, this book was written with the "FULL" and exclusive cooperation, of the Israeli Air Force high command. I don't want to give away too much of the book, but it actually gives you information, way ahead of the actual mission also. Such as, Saddam Hussein's childhood and early years, that led and shaped him into the monster he became, as with the building of this nuclear reactor, and the vow to blow Israel off the face of the earth. It traces all the secret training in Israel, leading up to the historic raid. A titillating, page, early in the book, is an organization chart, of all the Israeli leaders in June 1981, and how they voted, pro or con, for the approval of the mission. This story makes James Bond look like The Hardy Boys. During the training of the pilots, Israel had to dismantle part of the jets, to lower the weight, so they would use less fuel, since the round trip mission from Israel to Iraq and back, had to be done with no refueling. Since I am not a pilot, but fly constantly. I almost felt like I was a passenger, along with the brave Israeli pilots, as they had to fly so close to the ground (100 FEET!) for 600 MILES over Saudi Arabia, to stay under the radar. The pilots had to contend with the rising heat from the desert, that adversely affected the jets. There were also things going on outside of Israel, that had to be done, while training was still taking place, to insure that the Iraqi nuclear reactor wouldn't go "live", before the Israeli plan was ready to go into action! These events were so unbelievable, that if you saw it in an Arnold Schwartzenagger, or Clint Eastwood movie, you wouldn't believe it! A beautiful blonde, pretending to be hit by a car, in front of a French Security gate, where the final pieces of the nuclear reactor were being manufactured. With this "blonde" diversion, Israeli agents got into the French manufacturing facility, to sabotage the piece, needed to finish the reactor. Thereby giving Israeli pilots, and masterminds, more time to prepare. The blowing up of an Italian apartment, owned by a supplier of parts to Iraq, as a warning not to supply the reactor. Of course, credit for the explosion was given to someone else. I could go on and on, but, that's why I said earlier, you can't put the book down. I want to tell you more, because it's unbelievable, but just go buy the book, and then I guarantee you, you'll want to tell someone else too. P.S. This could be a blue print for Iran. Wait and see?!
This book is a fast and entertaining read.......2007-03-19
If you are interested in military and middle east history, this may be a book for you. It has a good pace and is very easy reading. The pace of the book is not quite as fast as BlackHawk Down, but better than Bowden's other book, Killing Pablo. It almost has that 'reads like fiction' feel. I agree though, with one of the other posters comments that I read, and that is that there are alot of technical details that are not correct, (like "heat seeking Sparrow's") which does beg the question of whether or not he did not did not get all the facts right. But none the less, still a fun read and if even only half of it is right, its still an amazing story. I will highly recommend this book to my friends.
Incredible.......2007-02-24
Raid on the Sun describes the events leading up to to the 1981 raid on the Osirik reactor. It's a solid written, highly readable book. The book jacket nails it dead on by saying that this is something you'd see in a Hollywood thriller - a small country up against incredible odds both technologically and politically and overcoming them. I highly recommend it.
Reading some of the other reviews, I would like to point out that the comparisons to the current situation with Iran are perfunctory at best. Iran's nuclear facilities are deep underground, spread out in multiple locations over a large land mass, many cynically located under civilian areas such as schools. The Iranians learned many lessons from "the raid on the sun." There are three options on the table at this point from the Israeli perspective:
1. Wait and hope the U.S. bombs Iran. It's not looking like this is going to happen, as Bush probably needs Congress's authorization , and they most likely will not give it considering how Iraq is going. Furthermore, Bush has given authorization to Rice and the State Department to try to negotiate. Looks like Cheney and the neo-cons have lost power. Yet Israel will give it until the end of the year at least, according to leaked reports.
2. Attack Iran. Given how spread out the facilities are and Israel's capabilities, they have the ability to attack the three or four most important nuclear targets but not much more, which will delay the nuclear program for a number of years but not stop it. Iran will retaliate heavily, as well as its proxies Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas. The Tel Aviv skyscrapers will almost certainly be hit; there will be a huge fallout internationally; and Israel's economy will go to hell.
3. Do nothing, which is of course the worst decision, given Ahmadinejad's statements about Israel and the apocalyptic beliefs of Shiite Islam.
We'll have to wait and see, eh? By the way, I highly recommend that you check out the MIT paper, "Osirak Redux? Assessing Israeli capabilities to Destroy Iranian Nuclear Facilities" by Whitney Raas and Austin Long, which is where the estimates from #2 come from.
Exciting .......2006-11-04
This is a great read. I found my heart pounding as these great pilots defended their country against this great evil.
Incredible tale!.......2006-09-11
This is an incredible story of the June 7, 1981, operation that took out Saddam Hussein's nuclear reactor and, as a result, probably alone kept him from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Astonishingly, the brave Israeli pilots took 8 F-16's in to enemy territory and all returned home safely. This book details the planning and exeuction of this operation from start to finish.
This is a very good read, especially given the happenings of recent years in that region. Despite the almost unanimous international criticism Israel received for this operation, we probably have those brave men and women of the IDF to thank today for the fact that the world has not yet experienced a nuclear holocaust at the hands of a mad tyrant.

Sun Microsystems is the type of company that most new startups hope to become: massively profitable, astoundingly innovative, and supremely adaptable. But as Karen Southwick's engaging narrative High Noon makes clear, there were many bumps along the road to Sun's $25 billion market valuation. In fact, when Sun started out in the early '80s as a spinoff of the Stanford University Network (SUN), there was barely a road at all.
It's hard to remember a time when there wasn't a computer on every desktop, but in 1981, engineers had to stand in line to use their company's mainframes. Sun's business strategy was to sell a desktop workstation for each employee who needed a computer. On top of that, Sun allowed those workstations to exchange data via an intracompany network, and used graphical interfaces to make them easier to navigate. Standard stuff now, but a radical series of concepts back then, and it was inevitable that Sun would clash with Microsoft. Sun CEO Scott McNealy's enmity for the software colossus is well-known--he was a key player in the U.S. government's antitrust action against Microsoft in the late 1990s--and it temporarily scattered the company's focus, leading to a major reorganization.
The conclusion to the Sun story is, of course, unknown. Southwick ends her book with a peek into the future, speculating on what will become of promising computer languages like Java and Jini. But it seems like it'll be a long time before Sun sets. --Lou Schuler
Book Description
In 1982, a little upstart named Sun was making waves in the high-tech industry with its groundbreaking workstation technology, even as early competitors dismissed the company as not worth losing sleep over. Since then, Sun Microsystems has become a formidable presence in the industry, making its own rules and taking no prisoners, and is currently poised to reach the highest point of its ascendancy--the challenge of Microsoft's dominance over the future of computing.
The driving force behind this once fledgling company is a man who has been described as brash, unconventional, ambitious, forward-looking, and sometimes even his own worst enemy. Scott McNealy turned Sun into the multibillion-dollar success it is today--a developer of innovative software like Java that is revolutionizing the computing landscape.
High Noon is the inside story of Sun's rise to power, from its shaky start in Silicon Valley through its transformation under the aggressive and inspirational leadership of McNealy. Karen Southwick reveals the behind-the-scenes maneuverings of McNealy and Sun, with candid interviews from the key players and insights into the inner workings of the high-tech industry.
This book examines how scrappy underdog Sun overcame its larger and supposedly tougher competitors, combining hard work, tenacity, and talented people to build a more innovative and flexible company. You'll learn how McNealy moved Sun up the industry food chain, challenging more established companies like Hewlett-Packard and Digital Equipment by expanding Sun's product line and refocusing the business.
High Noon expertly chronicles McNealy's triumphant history with Sun, from his early days as vice president of manufacturing to a CEO known for shooting straight from the hip without regard for the consequences. You'll discover how "Javaman"--as Fortune magazine dubbed McNealy--prompted Sun to take risks that ultimately allowed it to survive, thrive, and dominate--making Microsoft stand up and take notice. And you'll see how Sun's looming showdown with this industry giant promises wide-reaching implications for businesses and consumers alike. Among High Noon's revelations:
* A new perspective on how the complex, contradictory McNealy shaped his company and fashioned its strategy
* Insight into central issues facing the high-tech industry, such as network computers and the future of the Internet
* An insider view of the maneuverings of industry powerhouses, including Microsoft, Oracle, Netscape, IBM, and Intel
* Both entertaining and instructive, High Noon offers valuable lessons for taking charge of your destiny and succeeding in a fast-paced, unpredictable, and even hostile environment.
Advance Praise for Karen Southwick's High Noon
"High Noon captures the electricity and drama of one of the most important high-tech sagas of our time. Rich with insight as well as previously undisclosed stories."--Jim Moore, Founder, GeoPartners Research, Inc. Author of The Death of Competition
"High Noon reveals the inside story of one of the companies Microsoft fears most, Sun Microsystems. Southwick uses her keen insight to tell the story of how four twenty-somethings created a company that has grown from a small seller of scientific computers to one of the most dominant high-tech firms in the world."--Eric Nee, Editor, Fortune
"Scott McNealy is one of the most complex, fascinating individuals in high tech. Karen Southwick captures the contrarian spirit of Sun Microsystems and the intriguing personalities that run it."--Howard Anderson, President, The Yankee Group
"High Noon takes us on a straight path to the future."--Dr. Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO, Novell, Inc.
"High Noon illustrates how a company can succeed in the technology industry through a delicate balance between drive, talent, and timing."--Carol Bartz, Chairman and CEO, Autodesk

Not a good story book.......2006-01-31
Well, here I am, after reading the book for about two weeks every morning, and I am left with no deep impressions about either Sun or Scott.
The book appears to be a collection of newspaper articles. My first impression from the title of the book was that it talks a lot about Scott McNealy, which the author clearly failed to achieve. I guess the author could have rather written two books - a biography on Scott and business history of Sun. The book fails to achieve either of these satisfactorily.
I was hoping to know a lot about Java and Solaris, and although there were three chapters dedicated to Java, they didnt leave a lasting impression on me. The author seems to be unaware of other battles going around which would give Java a tough time to evolve.
Finally, the book doesnt really form a story. Its more like every chapter can be read almost independent of each other.
Thin.......2005-10-20
If you were on a desert island from 1982 to 1999, this book might have extra value to you. Otherwise, you may already know a great deal about what's covered in this book.
"High Noon" is quite readable but doesn't dig very deep. It provides a good, albeit Pollyanna-ish introduction to Sun's history and to McNealy...up until 1999. Did I learn anything? Yes, for example, I hadn't known that Gosling architected NeWS. But the level of this book isn't that much deeper than a Reader's Digest article.
If you don't know much about Sun's pre-2000 past and want a quick survey, "High Noon" may help you.
Good, just very dated.......2003-11-06
After recently taking on some professional responsibility for a large Solaris farm after a long hiatus (about a decade) from Sun technology, I thought this might catch me up with the company and products. It did provide some good info, but this work is over four years old, an eternity in technology. It certainly did not reflect Sun's rapid decline in market cap and Linux debacles, both of which landed it on the front page of the WSJ a few weeks ago.
I might have rated this four stars a few years ago. The only qualms are that the author should have presumed a more technical, computer-literate audience, and the audio quality was inferior (I listened to the unabridged Audible version).
Well researched and written, useful.......2002-09-27
Unlike most books of the high-tech, hero-worship genre, these authors actually did their homework and then wrote an intelligent, well organized history of Sun Microsystems and Scott McNealy. Given the multiple transformations that Sun has gone through (workstations, chip design, software design, servers, memory systems, enterprise hardware and software, and Java), as well as its famous feud with Microsoft and Mister Bill, that is no easy task, but they provide a succinct (225 page) and unbiased view that will be of interest to anyone who is interested in learning more about these subjects. The endnotes are particularly helpful.
Although the authors were not able to interview McNealy (he turned down their request), they do include intelligent observations about him and Sun from knowledgeable persons both within and outside Sun. Given the shallowness of McNealy's public comments and statements in other interviews to date (one suspects that he is finally learning to put a governor on his mouth), the omission is not noticeable.
It is rumored that Ms. Southwick is in the process of preparing a similar volume about Oracle and Larry Ellison. If so, it will be a welcome improvement over the swill (e.g., "The Oracle of Oracle" by Florence Stone) that has been published about them to date.
Needed more information about Sun the company.......2002-05-02
While I harbor no great love for Microsoft, I have even less for people who whine about a problem when they should be working on a solution. In my opinion, Scott McNealy is in that category. His constant verbal bashing of Microsoft detracts from what should be a positive message of Sun's advances in technology. Java, the crown jewel of software development at Sun, is a sound technical achievement. No one can examine the technical specifications of C#, the language developed at Microsoft, and not recognize its' Java "roots." In this book you learn about McNealy and I was gratified to learn that there are people at Sun who are just as frustrated at his "first whiner" tactics.
While Southwick goes to great lengths to maintain an even-handed approach, there is still a clear, although slight bias towards Sun. However, it does not detract from the quality. In my opinion, what lessened the value of the book was the emphasis on the personality of McNealy rather than that of Sun. As a major technology company, it is far more interesting than its' talkative CEO. From my perspective, Sun chief scientist Bill Joy is a more interesting personality than McNealy. A superlative, extrapolative thinker, Joy is someone to be listened to.
The complex interactions between Sun, IBM, HP, Oracle and Microsoft is one of the most fascinating events of our time. Simultaneously competitors as well as cooperators, how they move together dictates the rate of technical progress. This means far more to me than a series of negative comments about Bill and his group. Therefore, more ink should have been spent describing how these companies interact.

A story of cheer and insight.......2007-03-29
On her way home from Sunday school, a young African-American girl is put "in a tizzy" because her slow-poke brother likes to let his eyes wander to the beautiful world surrounding them. On returning to her home, her toys --which speak to a child as toys should--also make her a bit distressed by their habits of indecisiveness, laziness, and constant curiosity. It is Dear Dolly who questions the young girl as to why she goes to Sunday school when she doesn't believe in anything taught there. In objecting, our young protagonist reflects upon advice from the elder doll who reminds her that God is constantly within us and challenges us. God is in everyone and it is God who makes us who we are. In "letting go and letting God," the young girl begins to stop worrying about everyone else and rejoices in the God incarnate in each of us.
This is a simple and nice story with some serious ideas to ponder. The book's watercolor illustrations are wonderful.
When the biggest draw to a book is the author's name..........2004-03-08
I read this book while taking a class on children's literature, and was asked to look at the lieterary elements in the story. I have found this book to be boring for a child, as the talking dolls in the story reveal the moral explicitly. The girl does not come to moral understanding through experience, which is the best way to present a moral to a young reader. The idea of this book is solid, but it's presentation is definately lacking. Good characters, even in children's books, stay with you for quite a while. I read this story yesterday, and hardly remember anyone or anything.
Just a Touch Away.......2000-06-24
This gently written story is a wonderful reminder of God's nearness and of God's love. It makes God readily accessible and easy for children(and adults) of all ages to renew, reaffirm and reattest their love for God and their relationship to God.

Manufacturing Dominance doesn't equal Financial Dominance.......2003-10-21
This book increases my understanding of the Japanese culture, psyche and love for bureaucracy, and how Japan's strengths in manufacturing does not necessarily translate well or able to be copied to Financial Dominance.
After reading this book, it is shocking to imagine all those trillions earned by Japanese manufacturing got squandered by arrogant, ill-equipped bureaucrats.
He does ramble on a bit, and repeat himself, but since he wrote from loads of interviews, I guess they all say the same things.
Many lessons for us to learn here in Malaysia. If they get to wake up and increase their competencies in the financial field, that'll be great to see.

Another "Inside the Minds" Winner.......2007-04-27
Reading this book not only provided me with a new perspective on the people leading me, but also provided me with a powerful reference for explaining my issues to them to make our cooperative work more effective. Also, it has provided me with a foundation on which to build my movement towards becoming a technical leader as a VP/Head of Development, CTO or CIO.
Once again, this peer into the thoughts and thought processes of leading technology leaders has provided me with a wonderful substitution for actually having the experience myself. Concrete examples, compelling statements/arguments, etc. make this and the others in its series valuable from "worker bee" to CEO.
The repetition in this series of publications also helps drive-home some concrete principals for successful growth and building of a technical foundation.

Nice cage but no bird.......2005-12-15
An amusing read about the misadventures of a Time Share OPC [ off premises contact ] mainly over in Tenefife, Spain. The main character from England tells about some of the different ways he talks vacationers into taking timeshare tours, and the compensation for each tour taken . It seems that they make good money and spend it fast as well with alot of partying. Partly and probably due to the high stress nature of the job. Not too much, however, on how timeshares work, who buys them, the role of sales, trading, the long term advantages etc.

Book Description
Visiting North Korea is a surreal experience. Harried-looking traffic police clear up imaginary bottlenecks on the deserted streets of Pyongyang, while long lines of forlorn citizens wait patiently to be admitted to amusements parks that have long since been abandoned. Everywhere, pretense and illusion are the order of the day. Closed to the West for more than forty years, North Korea is an isolated and alien land. When Yi Sun-Kyung traveled there in the summer of 1994the first Western journalist ever allowed in for an extended visitshe found a nation ruled by fear and a people yearning for unification with the South. This extraordinary memoir grew out of that unforgettable trip. But Inside the Hermit Kingdom is more than just a travelogue of a strange and foreign country. It is in fact the story of two journeysthe first a journey to a place seldom seen and only vaguely understood, the second a journey of self-discovery for the author. Born in South Korea in 1967, Sun-Kyung moved with her family to Canada when she was still a girl. But she always felt exiled from the land of her birth, and the trip to North Korea in 1994and a second one to South Korea in 1995was an opportunity for her to face some of the complicated questions that had shaped her life. In Inside the Hermit Kingdom, she examines her own ambiguous feelings about being an immigrant to Canada, her hostility toward the Korean-Canadian community, and her unease at being caught between two such vastly different worlds. In addition to being a fascinating glimpse inside what is probably the most reclusive place left on earth, this deeply affecting memoir is a rich and complex story about appearance and reality, about dashed expectations and trying to go home again, about learning where you came from to discover where youre going.
Customer Reviews:
A book I could relate to.......2000-06-20
After attending the author's presentation at my college (UBC) in 1997 on her journey to the Koreas, I had to read her book. I couldn't put her book down once I began, because her childhood experience with the whites and later her painful and bitter experience with the Korean community reminded me so much of my own. She went to the Koreas to seek healing, only to be disgusted and hurt by what she saw. I am only glad that I never went back to the land of gooks since I left at the age of ten.
My identity as a Korean-Canadian male notwithstanding, I found myself agreeing with her assessment on "Little Korea." Like her, I, too, despised the quarrelsome, catty and gossip-prone Korean expatriate community (read Korean church), and held both my volatile father and his Korean friends in contempt. Then as now, I simply could not understand why they still cling to the old values from home in a place where such values are simply incompatible. Moreover, I could never understand why so many of my second-generation Korean-Canadian friends cling so dearly to an institution (Church) that is bound to destroy them. As early as fourteen I understood that the Korean church would ultimately destroy me and my friends, and cut my ties with it. Most of my friends did not. She may be right, after all, about the inability of the Korean kids to grow up.
My understanding is that she wrote the book, not to change the flawed mentality of Little Korea and the two Koreas far away,--after all, such attempt is not only impossible but futile--but to sift through her confusion and anger. It took a lot of courage on her part to hold a mirror to the face that was flawed Korean mentality. That is why she commands my deep respect.
Bravo !.......1999-07-13
As a 2nd generation Korean American, I connected very well with Miss Kyung's book. I bought this book while I was studying in Montreal. It brings to light the persona and mentalities of the Korean community today. I was a bit suprised at how Miss Kyung placed her fellow Korean Canadians in such a negative view, but I understand that it was necessary to try to fix the problems within Korean communities today. Reading about her trip to North Korea was very intrigueing. She gave a very good account of daily life in North Korea. Miss Kyung was also good at exposing the stigmas placed against Korean Canadians (and Korean women) by 'newcomer' Koreans. An excellent read !
