    Book Description

In Psychoanalytic Object Relations Therapy, Althea Horner explores the clinical implications of developmental object relations theory. She considers the importance of finding the interpersonal metaphor embedded in the patient's material, the various kinds of interventions made by the therapist, and the multiple ways the patient uses the therapist, such as a selfobject, a container, and an object for identification. Eight case presentations demonstrate Horner's theoretical contributions.

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2001-08-02

An astounding piece of synthetic analysis of a very, very complicated field, this book has rightly been referrred to by scores and scores of subsequent writers in the field of psychoanalysis and personality theory. The authors have critically scrutinzed the various schools of thought in the post-Freudian landscape and astutely determined their theoretical similarities and differences. The writing is direct and persuasive, albeit intended for an audience familiar with psychological terminology. It is amazing work and one of the best books in any field over the last 20 years.

    5 out of 5 stars I like it!.......1999-02-22

This book is necessary in developing a full understanding of Object Relations Theory.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential reading.......1998-02-03

This book is cited in virtually every book written on object relations theory since its publication. It gives a thorough background to the theories of all of the major contributors to object relations theory. It is brilliantly written and understandable with a basic knowledge of psychoanalytic jargon. An essential work.

Thomas Ogden performs scanning of development of British Object Relations School of Psychoanalysis. He starts with Freud basis and deepens the discussion while talking about phantasies and inner structures as defined by Klein.Another deep discussion of contribution of Winnicot. For each theoretician Ogden offers fresh look and review of concepts ,after that he deepens and enriches each of them by looking back and drawing the discussion into depths of true psychoanalysis.

    Book Description

Accurate and authoritative, Theories of Personality by Jess and Gregory Feist presents 23 leading theories of personality in a thorough, interesting and logical manner. The book begins with an introductory chapter designed to acquaint students with the meaning of personality and provide them with a solid foundation for understanding the nature of theory and its crucial contributions to science. The next seventeen chapters present twenty-three major theories with a fresh approach and a more complete view encompassing, a biographical sketch of each theorist, related research and applications to real life. When appropriate, the authors point out ways in which the theorists' life experiences may have helped shape her or his theory.

When I searched and found this book, it appeared to be the actual text. However what I received was the the student workbook. No where on the webpage for the bok did it state that it was the workbook.
The Ad was very misleading and now i'm stuck with an item i did not want.

2 out of 5 stars Lack of real world perspective.......2004-11-02

I would agree with the other reviews in that this book is an easy to read text with easy to understand explanations. However, there is no real world applicability. There are no case studies about real life people and how their personalities fit into their lives (i.e. type of career, choice of mate, type of friends they choose, how they view money etc.) not to mention that I think it would be interesting to see what other famous people have the same personality traits that we do (as in other texts in this subject area). In an abnormal psychology class I took, the text would refer to real studies of individuals and their psychopathologies that create their persona. To me this is what makes a great text - real life stories with real life people, what a revelation!!

This text also reminds me of a general psychology class, sans the history of psych. in that it covers many famous psychologists, i.e. Freud, Jung, Horney, Fromm etc. but it reads like a historiography of each psychologist, I know all about Freud and his theories, tell me how his view of personality is different than the other psychologists with real case studies, this text lacks the case study depth that other Psych. of Personality texts cover.. From a students point of view; teachers, choose a different text!

4 out of 5 stars As colourful as its cover.......2002-03-24

One of the best books on personality theories. I found mostly fascinating the sections concerning the current findings in personality research. Very serious, detailed and juicy material. A great book to buy and own.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to some important psychological theories.......2000-03-30

This is a great book. It covers many different theories on how personality works from different psychological perspectives. Each section helps the reader understand the different views of each theory of personality and how it functions within the mind. One comes away from this book understanding a little bit more about the hows and whys of personality. A great introduction to psychology in general for anybody ranging from student to non-student, specialist to non-specialist. I highly recommend it.

A clinician's Rosetta Stone for understanding and treating presenting problems

"I highly recommend this book to therapists of all persuasions."--Allan N. Schore, department of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences, University of California at Los Angeles School of Medicine

In this important book, noted author, teacher, and psychologist Althea J. Horner shows how to reveal, understand, and use the powerful core relationship problem -- which is formed from earliest childhood and creates an image of the self in relation to others -- so it can act as a Rosetta stone for understanding the underlying conflict that repeatedly plays out in a client's behavior. Once this essential element is uncovered, clinicians learn how to work with their clients to successfully resolve common presenting problems.

        Book Description

First published in 1952, W. R. D. Fairbairn's Psychoanalytic Studies of the Personality re-orientated psychoanalysis by centering human development on the infant's innate need for relationships, describing the process of splitting and the internal dynamic relationship between ego and object. His elegant theory is still a vital framework of psychoanalytic theory and practice, infant research, group relations and family therapy.

This classic collection of papers, available for the first time in paperback, has an introduction by David Scharff and Ellinor Fairbairn Birtles which sets Fairbairn's highly original work in context, provides an overview of object relations theory and traces modern developments, launched by Fairbairn's discoveries.

          Book Description

This volume explores the primitive yet complex emotional world of the baby, a preverbal world that predates memory, symbolic representation, self-reflection, and verbal description. Author Ivri Kumin describes the impact of early relational experiences on the foundation of emotional living, when traumatic developmental interferences can disrupt the infant's emerging capacity for representational thought. Using detailed clinical examples, he explains how these early experiences are enacted within the psychoanalytic situation and how their analysis and mediation enable the patient to think about and emotionally encompass these states for the first time.

Multidisciplinary in his approach, the author integrates infant observational studies and attachment theory with psychoanalytic developmental perspectives. He explores the core concepts of the three major psychoanalytic theories: signal anxiety (ego psychology), projective identification (object relations theory), and affect attunement (self psychology), and explains the unity of their underlying modes of action on the basis of contemporary infant research. The book then applies its understanding of early relatedness to a wide variety of psychoanalytic issues of both theoretical and clinical importance.

Part I of the volume examines the basic language of primary relatedness. Topics covered include early attachment, precursors of internalized object relationships, signal anxiety, and environmental mediation. Chapters in Part II discuss affect transmission, the nature of emotional exchanges in the psychoanalytic situation, fields of identity, creation of representability, and the psychoanalytic mediation of primitive emotional states. Part III addresses pathology, including in-depth examinations of disturbances of pre-object relatedness, ambivalent and avoidant relatedness, the repetition compulsion, trauma and enactment, and the effect of incorrect interpretations.

Synthesizing empirical findings with theoretical and clinical information, this volume is invaluable for psychoanalysts and psychodynamic therapists. It is an ideal text for graduate-level courses in psychoanalytic theory and technique, attachment theory, human development, and psychotherapy of early traumatic states.

5 out of 5 stars A penetrating look into the affect and attachment of babies........2000-01-01

I am neither a psychiatrist nor a psychologist, but I learned a tremendous amount from this book. The author makes the ideas of projective- and introjective identification very clear. It was fascinating to learn that a baby's distress call, and the way it is responded to by the parent, becomes the model for the child and later adult to manage his or her own anxiety. As a father of a 16 month-old daughter, it helps me understand how my parenting, and empathetic answering my daughter's needs, contribute profoundly to her current and future mental health. I didn't need the advice to psychotherapists, but found it interesting. I feel that reading Charles Brenner's book, A Textbook of Psychoanalysis (I think that is the title), before this one, would be helpful to novices like myself to understand better the concepts in the book.
