Great for bedtime... but the rhymes were lost in translation.......2007-07-23

My 2 yr. old loves to call out every object in the pages. Since the text is meant to rhyme in the english version - wich gives it its charm- we read it in both languages. We are delighted by its simplicity and can't go a night without it. We love it and it will be passed on to my younger one.

I think I love this book even more than my kids, & this is their favorite.
The simple rhyming lines are even more beautiful in Spanish. My kids can repeat the entire book... And who doesn't love Margaret Wise Brown?

Great Spanish reinforcement.......2007-03-23

I've read Goodnight moon to my now 5 month-old baby every night since he was less than two months old. Since most of the books I have are in English and I want to raise my child bilingual, I decided to get our nightly routine book in Spanish for more reinforcement. It is great, he recognizes the book that we read in English, and I can read him in my native language helping him become a bilingual child.

I love this book in Spanish as much as I do in English. It doesn't lose any of it's rythme in the translation.

Classic in Spanish. Most children own the English version, so the Spanish version will be familiar. I like that it is not bilingual, and the translation is very well done. Flowing "buenas noches, luna... buenas noches, habitación..." makes it easy for children to learn vocabulary. My kids love to find el ratoncito (little mouse) on each page and la luna. I am a fluent Spanish speaker, mother and teacher. I use this book as one of my staples in class for preschoolers from baby to age 5.

I love this book--I was so glad when I ran across it. A very sweet sentiment and nicely done illustrations. The repetition will help a small child learn Spanish.

The poetry of adolescense.......2007-10-02

Munoz Molina's novel is a moving evocation of the painful transition from the bliss of childhood to the loneliness of adolescence. The narrator is a thirteen year old boy who feels so oppressed within his reality (poverty, Franco's Spain, the collective memory of the Spanish civil war, Catholicism) that he becomes obsessed with the ongoing Apollo XI mission. The narrator lovingly reconstructs the moon flight from tidbits of information he gleans from magazines, library books, television reports, newspaper articles and the word on the street. This includes the propaganda inserted in the media by the-powers-that-be, which is evident to today's reader (as the propaganda inserted in our media will be comically evident to a reader forty years from now). The narrator's other obsession is -not surprisingly- his own sexuality which he explores with equal degrees of (very graphic) fervor and guilt. A novel for mature readers who will re-live the magic of going to the moon, historically and metaphorically.

Trabajo bien logrado desde el punto de vista del despliegue del idioma español, pero desafortunado en cuanto a la trama y al apoyo que del proyecto estadounidense Apolo de llegada a la Luna hace para desarrollar la novela. Simplemente lleno de errores: Página 10, dice que el astronauta es golpeado imperceptiblemente por partículas de viento solar, lo cual no es cierto. El viento solar olímpicamente atraviesa, no golpea. Uno de los rebuznos más grandes viene en la página 11, donde dice que el cohete Saturno se cubría deliberadamente con láminas de hielo artificial, cuando sabemos que las placas de hielo eran bien naturales, provocadas por la condensación del hidrógeno líquido criogenizado dentro del cohete y expuesto a la cálida temperatura de la Florida del mes de julio. Errores del estilo de decir que la atmósfera del Apolo era puro oxígeno cuando sabemos que después del incendio del Apolo 1 en Tierra eso fue modificado; de decir que jamás un vehículo tan grande como el Apolo 11 había despegado de la Tierra cuando sabemos que los Apolo 8, 9 y 10 ya lo habían hecho inclusive con pesos mayores, como en el Apolo 10. El listillo chico de 13 años protagonista de la novela dice que Neil Armstrong nació en Watanaka, cuando el nombre real es Wapakoneta, Ohio. Dice el autor que los astronautas tenían oportunidad de oler el mar al ascender al cohete la mañana del despegue, cuando sabemos que habían sido herméticamente cerrados dentro de sus trajes y escafandras desde horas antes de subir; dice que jamás artefacto humano había alcanzado tales velocidades cuando sabemos que ya la habían alcanzado el Apolo 8 y el Apolo 10. Dice que el motor de ascenso del módulo lunar jamás se había encendido cuando se sabe que se encendió en dos misiones anteriores, el Apolo 9 y el Apolo 10. En fin, una sarta de errores históricos mezclados con una pobre trama de la llegada a la adolescencia de un muchachito de la España rural y todo ello ambientado en 1968-1969. No ofrece mayor interés.

Being Peruvian myself, a primary teacher, and knowing many of the legends, this book is a great teaching tool. The illustrations are take from actual textiles from Peru and are just breath taking. The moral of the story is one the children will understand easily. This can be taught in a variety of ways : moon, culture, country study, and more. This is a wonderful book that I strongly recommend.
