Study Guide for Gravetter/Wallnau's Essentials of Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, 5th
ASIN: 053463396X |
Book Description
This brief version of Gravetter and Wallnau's proven best-seller offers the straightforward instruction, accuracy, built-in learning aids, and wealth of real-world examples that professors AND students have come to appreciate. The authors take time to explain statistical procedures so that students can go beyond memorizing formulas and gain a conceptual understanding of statistics. By integrating applications to ensure that even students with a weak background in mathematics can understand statistics, the authors skillfully demonstrate that having an understanding of statistical procedures help them comprehend published findings, and become savvy consumers of information. Known for its exceptional accuracy and examples, this text also has a complete supplements package to support instructors with class preparation and testing.
Customer Reviews:
Didn't find it helpful.......2007-09-02
I didn't find this a helpful assistance to the text. It didn't give any explanations to the formulas or shortcuts that I expected. It was more like a dictionary for the text book (words and definitions).
Great for people who ask "but why..." at the end of every statement. .......2006-05-10
This book is absolutely excellent. I have looked through other stats books and lost interest immediately, but this book is written in such a way that it actually makes you want to learn the material. Rather than just telling you how to solve the problem, the authors inform you as to why learning it is necessary, and frequently give you real-life, interesting scenarios regarding how specific formulas are used by psychologists.
Statistics, of course, becomes progressively more difficult over time, and you may need to seek outside help once you reach the last few chapters in particular. However, I believe that this book is the best of its kind, and it might be worth purchasing even if it is not your primary source for class, etc.
Good moral support.......2006-03-23
My first impression was that this book was priceless since it really helped me through the first couple of chapters in the main text. At the beginning it goes into lengthy, step-by-step instructions. I may not have felt as confident in the class if it had not been for this supplement. Once I reached chapter 6 and 7 it was all over! There was not enough information to help me understand what the book was losing me on, I needed to seek private tutoring at this point. Occasionally I still go to the book in the hopes that it can pick me up and get me through the homework but it does not. These later chapters may be too complicated to go into in a study guide but what would a study guide be for if not walking you through the steps? I am glad I bought it, just dissappointed that it quit so early.
Fantastic Statistics Resource.......2005-09-22
This is the very best statistics book that I have purchased (and I have purchased 5 others trying to help me get a grasp on this subject)! I would recommend it to anyone who needs an easy--to-read and easy-to-understand textbook on this difficult subject! I hope it helps you as much as it has helped me!
Wow! Clear, Concise, Excellent Book.......2005-05-19
Having seriously struggled for the last two years with the statistics side of my Psychology studies, this book has really made things so much clearer. An excellent book for anyone struggling to grasp the basic statistical concepts required in behavioral sciences.

Design and Analysis: A Researcher's Handbook (4th Edition)
ASIN: 0534250920 |
Book Description
Written by a renowned psychologist Roger E. Kirk of Baylor University, this classic text provides the graduate student in experimental design with detailed coverage of the designs and techniques with the greatest potential use in behavioral research. Kirk's book is known for its emphasis on the logical rather than the mathematical basis of experimental design; for its in-depth exploration of the relationship between analysis of variance and regression analysis; for its introduction of the concept of building block designs; and for its comprehensive scope that describes all of the ANOVA experimental designs that are potentially useful in the behavioral sciences and education.
Customer Reviews:
Simply a classic.......2003-05-07
This text is a great purchase for any student who will be designing and performing experiments as part of his or her own research. For example, a Ph.D. student in marketing who is studying consumer behavior should read this book. As a matter of fact, it would be a great "prep" book to read before showing up to a Ph.D. program (again, only if the research program will involve performing experiments).
It's expensive, it must be good, right?.......2000-04-03
I have used this book as a graduate student doing social science research. The editorial reviewers got it right; Kirk emphasizes logical explanation, although computational equations are presented in tandem. The book is so expensive because it's so thick and thorough. Everything's here. You won't have to buy a bunch of other books. Just about everything to do with ANOVA and modeling is in here. A good resource.

Book Description
This classic text on multiple regression is noted for its non-mathematical, applied, and data-analytic approach. Readers profit from its verbal-conceptual exposition and frequent use of examples. The applied emphasis provides clear illustrations of the principles and provides worked examples of the types of applications that are possible. Researchers learn how to specify regression models that directly address their research questions. An overview of the fundamental ideas of multiple regression and a review of bivariate correlation and regression and other elementary statistical concepts provide a strong foundation for a solid understanding of the rest of the text.
The third edition features an increased emphasis on graphics and
the use of confidence intervals and effect size measures and an accompanying CD with data for most of the numerical examples along with the computer code for SPSS, SAS, and SYSTAT.
Applied Multiple Regression serves as both a textbook for graduate students and as a reference tool for researchers in psychology, education, health sciences, communications, business, sociology, political science, anthropology, and economics. An introductory knowledge of statistics is required. Self-standing chapters minimize the need for researchers to refer to previous chapters. The book is an ideal text for courses on multiple regression and correlational methods.
Customer Reviews:
Second Grad Stats.......2007-05-06
I've adopted this text for my graduate seminar in Multiple Regression. I choose it over other texts for the topics AND because it's focus is on concepts rather than math. Now that we can carry SPSSX in our brief case, there is no need to focus on that computation.
Can't beat it.......2001-04-17
...This book is the source of all you need. It's hard going at times, but so's the subject. The book's 15 years old and remains the best guide to the analysis of correlated data. It's a reference book, one I value as much as a good dictionary. To use it as a text would be misguided unless the instruction was aimed at a sophisticated audience.
Best MRC Book Ever.......2000-03-24
I agree with the previous reviewer that there are times when the exposition in the book gets a bit intense; but c'mon! We're dealing with statistics. You gotta sweat a bit. That's when learning happens. In my opinion the book is extremely clearly written. And although you may have to re-read a few sentences a few times, the basic tools for understanding most every major aspect of MRC is embedded in the text. In sum, this was a great book that I read as a 2nd-year graduate student in psychology. Unlike the first reviewer, I turned to this text when I got confused during the course lectures!
MRC Analysis---good book overall.......1999-12-15
Cohen and Cohen's MRC analysis book is well versed and easy to understand for someone that is familiar with MRC terminology, however, for first year graduate students, the text is very equivocal. The book is lacking ample illustrations of complex problems, leaving students to rely on outside sources. Also, the book uses unfamiliar symbols that do not correspond with other MRC books, which intensifies the confusion level of the students even more.
Overall, the text is a great addition to a statistical library, and this reviewer recommends it, in spite of being a sub-par book for first year graduate students.

ASIN: 0495099007 |
Book Description
David Howell's practical approach focuses on the context of statistics in behavioral research, with an emphasis on looking before leaping; investigating the data before jumping into a test. This provides you with an understanding of the logic behind the statistics: why and how certain methods are used rather than just doing techniques by rote. Learn faster and understand more because Howell's texts moves you beyond number crunching, allowing you to discover the meaning of statistical results and how they relate to the research questions being asked.
Customer Reviews:
good book.......2007-07-18
I liked the explanations given about every step while learning the steps of analysis. The book explains 'how and why' in simple language. Also, the print outs of the computerized format of the analysis helped me! Definitely recommend this book for a beginner like me!
........2007-04-05
When I bought this product in no way did the description say that the textbook was not part of the purchase. I assumed I was buying the textbook as it was advertised with the cover of the textbook as it's picture.
Very unhappy.
Very Displeased.......2006-08-06
I have had this book for two semsters at a grad level. The information is confusing and at times leaves one lost. I am very displeased with the book. It has not helped me in no way understanding the meaning behind behavioral stats. In fact I am more confused now. I wish the book could have given more details on explaining stats instead of so many examples. The examples are find but the problem is they are continued from the beginning of the book. And if one doesnot grasp the beginning then how can one grasp the remainer of the text. I wouldnot recommend this book to no one.
E.T.
A clear and comprehensive introductory statistics text.......2002-03-12
I have been using this text for Levels 1, 2, and 3 social sciences statistics teaching in Britain and abroad for over 8 years now. Although I have tried using other introductory texts, I have yet to find a text as comprehensive and as clearly written as this.
The worst stats book for the social sciences.......2001-04-12
I hate to be so critical, but I must agree with my colleague who described his/her harrowing experience with this textbook. I have two rules about learning statistics: no one is ever above a review of the most basic topics and an author/professor can never go wrong by providing a variety of examples within the same topic area.

Customer Reviews:
Though the price was much too high, I still feel happy.......2007-09-29
I must say I felt bad with the price of the book - I felt it was much too high. But after reading the first few chapters of the book, and noting that it flows and is very easy to understand, I do not have to complain so much now. I am loving the book now.
Text Outline.......2007-08-09
I did not find this as useful as I had hoped it would have been. It was just all definitions from each chapter period.
CAREFUL!!.......2007-01-26
I just bought this book "the soft cover edition" after reading all these wonderful comments on the book. I thought, wow 9.95 and stats will be mine! I suppose I did not do enough research, because when the "soft cover" edition arrived it was not the same book that showed up in "Look Inside"... In fact, it's the outline study-guide for the text. I was really upset and feel that I have been misled. I am now returning the "soft cover" edition at my own expense because amazon "is not at fault". Please be aware that the reviews that are associated with this book are for the TEXT which costs alot more. I would have been happy to buy the text but I feel that I was misinformed and I am very upset. Don't make the same mistake I did. Make sure you buy the HARD COVER, unless you really want a useless "companion to the text" soft cover!
how to test hypotheses.......2006-10-28
[A review of the 7th Edition, that came out in 2006.]
The text starts off easily. With the elementary definitions of mean, median, percentiles etc. Things you probably should have dealt with in high school. Likewise with its treatment of probability theory. Though the latter goes directly to the normal or Gaussian distribution.
But the meat of the book really starts in part 3, which is about inferences of means and mean differences. For you, as a student or researcher, what is important is not a definition of terms and distributions, but how to test hypotheses. From this flows such ideas as the t statistic and the analysis of variance (ANOVA). Part 4 builds on this, with nonparametric tests and regression analysis. The linear regression in one variable is simple. Then you get multiple regression with 2 variables. Tied in is the chi square test and various other tests.
The book also is a quick introduction to using SPSS as your basic statistical program. In your field, SPSS is likely to be the dominant such program, and you need an indepth acquaintance with it.
Concise, thorough, and easy to understand.......2006-06-28
There isn't much more to say. This book is concise -- it gets right to the point, every time. It is also thorough -- it covers everything you need to move on to advanced statistics. But, best of all, it presents the material in a way that is very easy to understand and allows students to apply their new knowledge to the behavioral sciences.

Good explanatory book.......2003-03-01
I used this book for my psychological statistics course last semester. Although I have had teachers in the past who explained things more adequately, this book did a really good job explaining things for the most part. I almost always use examples to learn how to apply knowledge, as working through a problem step by step seems to be the best teacher to me. Fortunately, this book has a lot of examples. And, as a bonus, these examples apply towards the social sciences so you can see how everything fits in with a topic you're actually interested in (let's face it, few are interested in math).
I had already taken a statistics course in high school, so my stats class last year was pretty much a review for me. However, I wound up actually learning more than I planned to because of this book.
Overall, I recommend the book for anybody learning statistics.

Book Description
Now you can become intelligent consumers of scientific research, without being overwhelmed by the statistics! Jaccard and Becker's book teaches readers the basic skills for analyzing data and helps them become intelligent consumers of scientific information. Praised for its real-life applications, the book tells readers when to use a particular statistic, why they should use it, and how the statistic should be computed and interpreted. Because many readers, given a set of data, cannot determine where to begin in answering relevant research questions, the authors explicate the issues involved in selecting a statistical test. Each statistical technique is introduced by giving instances where the test is most typically applied followed by an interesting research example (each example is taken from psychology literature).

A Great Book.......2006-07-12
This is an exceptional book. Another review says the book is not good with SPSS, which is strange because the book includes sections in all the main chapters that explains SPSS output. This book is great this way. The disgruntled student reviewer must have skipped these because they appear in special chapter boxes that (bad) students often skip over. The treatment of z scores (which is not all that crucial anyway - when was the last time you saw a z score in a research article) is outstanding, so the review just sounds like sour grapes to me.
This book explains statistics intuitively and gives great explanations and examples. It is written very clearly. After reading it, I was able to read and understand journal articles much better. It has special sections to tell you how statistics will be presented in research reports and how to read them. This is a great feature. This book helped me so much and I think it deserves seven stars!
a students perspective.......2006-05-16
As a grad student who is at present using this textbook (I am in spring quarter, 06), I will sum it up in two words "it sucks". I have taken three different statistic classes and I am using their textbooks to fill in the many blanks this textbook has.
There are two major problems, one is that it does not have a connection with statistic software. My instructor assigns the problems in the chapter exercises to be performed on SPSS. This textbook is not geared for SPSS; it is set up for the problems to be worked the old fashioned way--paper and pencil, with a hand calculator to be used. It does not work well with SPSS, as my classmates and I have complained about to each other.
The other is that the authors seem to assume that students who have signed up for statistical classes love stats. Wrong ! ! ! Most students dread statistics class, they jokingly call it sadistic class. This is the only class that many of us feel totally stupid in (remember, we are GRADUATE level students, so we are not stupid). We need a textbook that explains everything in simple terms, gives many examples and then explains the steps in detail. The problems should be up-to-date, and able to be used in SPSS software.
The book does not adequately cover many topics, and the one subject that ever stats student hates to deal with is Z-scores. And as usual, this textbook hardly mentions it, four pages in one chapter discussing how to do z-scores. Yet it is one of the most important methods a stats student needs to know how to do. Several of my classmates feel that this book was a waste of their money.
For basic statistics in undergrad it may be adequate, or for those who are knowledgeable of statistics this may suffice; but for regular statistic class students, this textbook fails the class.
An Excellent Introduction.......2003-06-19
The book is up-to-date and effectively presents the basic concepts. Deals with current power and sphericity concerns. Example SPSS-keyed analyses and APA-format results sections are especially valuable for research training. Uses post-hoc Tukey HSD test. Separate nonparametric chapters. The authors know their material (not always the case with statistics texts) and they provide a solid (higher-level) introduction. Good selection of topics and fairly thorough. Perhaps a bit wordy at times. One of the best available introductions. From a long-time teacher of statistics with no connection to authors.

Book Description
This eighth edition of McCall's well-respected book continues to present concepts in a way that students can easily understand. The new edition has been updated throughout and now includes recommendations by the APA Task Force on Statistical Inference. As in previous editions, McCall helps students see the many real applications of statistics to research in the behavioral sciences. Taking a traditional approach to teaching the basic statistical concepts and methods used in behavioral research. McCall emphasizes building an understanding of the logic of statistics rather than stressing the mechanics. In this exciting revision, McCall continues to keep the data for the computational problems simple, so your students can focus on the rationale and outcome of techniques rather on the calculations themselves. Using clear discussion, a wide variety of end-of-chapter exercises, and examples drawn from actual studies, McCall helps students learn how to choose appropriate statistical methods and correctly interpret the results. Also retained in this edition are the author's step-by-step explanations for each proof and his clear definitions of symbols--the essential vocabulary of statistics--that have been so successful in helping students master the material.

The Joy of Statistics?.......2000-09-13
Although it is a rare segment of the human population who could claim to find scientific statistics "enjoyable", Robert McCall has somehow managed to take some of the pain out of what is generally deemed a horrifying experience. I thank Mr. McCall and the hands-on approach of his book for enabling me to make it through Stats this time with a passing grade! It would have gotten the full five stars if it weren't for the rediculous price...

Book Description
A proven performer designed for today’s psychology students, Fundamentals of Behavioral Statistics combines current thinking with a clear presentation designed to foster complete student understanding. A classic text that features a modern, student-oriented approach to studying behavioral statistics with an emphasis on accessibility and comprehensiveness, it is built on four tenants of success: a strong mathematical foundation, clear and interesting examples, rich illustrations and abundant exercises. The revision will continue to place great emphasis on introducing students to exploratory data analytic techniques by replacing outdated techniques with the latest, most up to date methods. Real life examples, used to present the most current approaches to teaching statistics, will be revised to incorporate results from popular and familiar experiments.

Great to reach an understanding.......2007-09-23
Great for those trying to get the basic understanding of behavioral statistics. The wording is very plain and easy to understand, yet they also don't ramble. The index works well, and the appendices are highly useful.
Statistics.......2007-09-16
I am using this book for an online graduate statistics course, so there is little direction from a formal instructor. All of my information so far is from this book. It is easy to read and the examples are easy to follow. I would recommend this book to anyone who is beginning the journey into statistics...very helpful
Really good.......2003-12-01
A unique introductory book in statistics. The hallmark of this book is nodoubt the clarity of detailed explanations of fundamental statistical concepts. A lot of invaluable material and explanantions here not to be found in other textbooks on statistics!
Highlights that spring to my mind are the excellent treatments of averages, correlation and regression, and hypothesis testing. A very important topic (usually missing in most textbooks) is the strength of evidence in hypothesis and significiance testing and is treated very nicely in various parts of the books. This book should not be missed by beginners (and probably experts) in the field.
