5 out of 5 stars One of the best SD books with connection to practical work.......2007-10-06

"Business Dynamics" is a great book leading the newcomer -as myself- into the field of SD and the experienced system dynamicist can use it as a knowledge pool.

Even though the book is rather expensinve -and heavy alike- it covers great wisdom of John Sterman (he is by the way a scholar of the founder of the field, Jay W. Forrester) and is more than worthwhile buying if you are strongly interested in the field.

I was lucky to meet John and Jay this summer during a specific SD workshop at MIT and the yearly System Dynamics Society Conference and could chat with both of them (they are both very practicably using SD with a strong academic background). Learning and getting more experienced in System Dynamics and the use for daily problem solving is a dynamic and evolving process of wisdom with lots of feedback ("Business Dynamics" can help a lot in getting deeper insights.

Best regards

Ralf

The definitive book on Business dynamics !
It may look dificult to follow, but it isn`t really easy to read and follow !
The cd brings good examples.

5 out of 5 stars Edward Garrity, Professor of Information Systems.......2007-01-04

Sterman's book is far and away the best and most comprehensive book on system dynamics for business. Although the title is "Business Dynamics" it really is a text on applying system dynamics to both business and larger social issues/systems.

If you are a strong student of business and systems then this is the book for you. It is highly recommended if you are interested in learning the most you possibly can regarding system dynamics and how to model systems. However, if you are searching for an introduction to this area - watch out. The book is actually quite advanced - it is used at MIT and other graduate business programs at top universities.

What is amazing about this book is that it blends absolute precision, correctness and detail with practical modeling advice and insight and it is written in a relaxed style with numerous examples. It is one of the best examples of clear writing about a complex topic. Dr. Sterman's years of system work has allowed him a level of clarity that is unsurpassed in the business and systems area.

As mentioned earlier, the book can be overwhelming and I would recommend a newcomer to this area to pick up several books first, to provide a more gentle introduction. This is not a contradiction of what I wrote earlier, it is simply that the book packs so much information in its pages, and it is still very long.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Chip designers, managers, programmers, investors: READ THIS.......2004-07-09

Chris Rowen, CEO of Tensilica, has an exceptionally broad history of successful experience in VLSI chip design, verification, software, systems design, multiprocessor applications, and EDA tools. This book draws on the integration of those experiences to build an exciting new approach to designing high-performance, low-cost, low-power chips and concurrently, well-tuned software.

Investors and managers should read Chapters 1,2,3 which analyze the trends and issues in System-on-Chip design, and motivate the use of a new approach that combines extensible processors with powerful software to create software and hardware in parallel, faster, and with less engineering effort. They should also read Chapter 8, which makes insightful prognostications about a future in which many chips will have hundreds of CPUs, or more.

If those Chapters describe What's Happening, and Why We Must Change, Chapters 4-7 explore How to Do It, and should be read by both hardware and software engineers who build embedded systems. The real-world examples (from Tensilica) and advice offer strong support that this approach actually works.

Although it certainly promotes the Tensilica viewpoint, it is well-motivated, well-referenced to the last 20 years of computing research, and has good comparisons with other approaches, i.e., it is not just a commerical sales-pitch. The book is clearly written (modulo a few typos), and can be used by readers of varying depth of experience and knowledge.

Computers have improved drastically in the last two decades, but we humans have not improved in speed or memory, and we are limited in the number of things we can really grasp at once. Real computing breakthroughs happen when people invent cost-effective ways to raise the level of abstraction, so that our brains can ignore low-level details and focus on larger issues.

Increasing CPU performance enabled people to shift some work from assembly code, to higher-level languages like FORTRAN or C, to early scripting languages [like UNIX's shell and awk], and then to even higher-level languages like TCL, Perl, PHP, Python, etc. These have enabled large numbers of people to build their own Web-based applications. It is simply unimaginable that we'd have all those applications if people had nothing but assembler and C.

I think this book describes a similar kind of breakthrough, which drastically raises the level of abstraction in concurrent hardware/software design, to take advantage of the huge nubmers of transistors now available at low cost. This doesn't mean that other design approaches will disappear (just as C hasn't gone away), but I do believe the approach described here will find increasingly wide usage, and it will certainly change the landscape. Chris is an old colleage from MIPS and SGI, and I always appreciated his insights, and this book integrates them into a very useful whole.

5 out of 5 stars Turtles for all.......2006-03-28

This book is a great guide to taking the somewhat difficult ideas explored in Mitchel Resnick's book "Turtles, Termites, and Traffic Jams" and implementing them with students. Adventures in modeling can be used alone but, for any teacher who wants to use this book in a computer class, it is helpful to read the other book first. The activities and challenges here are reasonable for students from college down though middle school. I know of one teacher who has even successfully used these activites with pre-teens.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but not perfect..........2006-01-03

The book is good overall but I felt they need to use more carefully thought out examples and not try to push an 'agenda'.
It is as if the author(s) are trying to make an issue over creation vs evolution. In the very beginning chapter, they make an invalid example by comparing evolution vs creation to central control vs decentralized systems. This is a quote from the book, "This tendency to assume centralized control, which we call the centralized mindset, makes it difficult for people to understand the workings of many phenomena in the world. The recurrent questioning of evolutionary theories is another example: When people see complex living systems in the world, they assume that someone or something must have explicitly designed them; instead, these livings systems are the products of millions of incremental changes over time."

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to modeling systems!.......2002-02-20

This is a great book for anyone interested in modeling dynamic systems. The authors provide wonderful background theory as a basis for building computer simulations. The simple step-by-step instructions guide you through the process of creating your own simulations using StarLogo. This book is an interesting, easily understandable beginner's manual and comes with all the software you need. It's a great way to teach yourself or other people how to program a simulation. I love the turtles!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to modeling systems!.......2002-02-18

This is a great book for people intereted in modeling systems behavior. The authors give an excellent background summary of the theory involved in StarLogo. The program given with the CD is easy to install and use. The book takes you step by step through thinking about and creating your own computer simulation in an easy to understand manner. There's lots of support for any technical difficulties you might have and good examples of what you can do with the program. I highly recommend it to everyone.

    Product Description

Molecular Modeling using Cellular Automata provides a practical introduction to an exciting modeling paradigm for complex systems. The book first discusses the nature of scientific inquiry using models and simulations, and then describes the nature of cellular automata models. It then gives detailed descriptions, with examples and exercises, of how cellular automata models can be used in the study of a wide variety chemical, physical, and biochemical phenomena. Topics covered include models of water itself, solution phenomena, solution interactions with stationary systems, first- and second-order kinetic phenomena, enzyme kinetics, vapor-liquid equilibrium, and atomic and molecular excited-state kinetics. The student experiences these systems through hands-on examples and guided studies, and there is room for further original experimentation using the accompanying computer program (on CD Rom).

This book is the first of its kind: a textbook and a laboratory manual about cellular automata modeling of common systems in chemistry. It is not only a text, but includes a CD Rom which allows readily-assimilated, real-time experience with the methodology and practice of cellular automata simulations. The book is designed to be used as a text in undergraduate courses dealing with complex systems and/or as a computational supplement to laboratory courses taught at the undergraduate level.

    The book includes:

    - Compact descriptions of a large variety of physical and chemical phenomena

    - An accompanying program (CD) for the study of these phenomena

    - Illustrative examples of simulations, with exercises for further study

    - An instructor's manual for use of the program

The book will be of great value in undergraduate courses in chemistry, physics, biology, applied mathematics, and bioinformatics, and as a supplement for laboratory courses in introductory chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, chemical engineering and other courses dealing with statistical and dynamic systems. It allows the exploration of a wide range of dynamic phenomena, many of which are not normally accessible within conventional laboratory settings due to limitations of time, cost, and experimental equipment.

        Book Description

The Granada Seminar is defined as a small topical conference whose pedagogical effort is especially aimed at young researchers. In fact, one interesting aspect of this meeting is the opportunity given to the young scientists to present their results and to discuss their problems with leading specialists. This year's seminar mainly covered the modeling of complex systems (with some emphasis on its computational aspects). This timely topic importantly relies on the creative use of computers and it is of interest in an increasing number of fields, from chemistry, biology and geology to engineering, communications and economics. Each topic is comprehensively described. The ‘Granada Lectures’ help introduce the beginner to novel advances in statistical physics and to the creative use of computers in scientific research. They serve as a work of reference for teachers, students and researchers.

        Book Description

This book explores the process of modeling complex systems in the widest sense of that term, drawing on examples from such diverse fields as ecology, epidemiology, sociology, seismology, as well as economics. It also provides the mathematical tools for studying the dynamics of these systems. Boccara takes a carefully inductive approach in defining what it means for a system to be "complex" (and at the same time addresses the equally elusive concept of emergent properties). This is the first text on the subject to draw comprehensive conclusions from such a wide range of analogous phenomena.

5 out of 5 stars A very good intructory book.......2007-04-02

This book encloses a large variety of models in an introductory level and opens the possibility to the students to go deep in specific topics through its references. So, it is adequate for a regular course on complex systems. The mean-field part of book provides a concise, clear and complete presentation of dynamical systems. In my opinion, the agent-based chapters is well presented, but do not cover satisfactorily the criticality of epidemic spreading, a central point in complex system modeling.

4 out of 5 stars A good comprehensive presentation of the state of the art.......2004-11-27

This is a fine book to learn the state of the art in 2004 in the field of complex systems modeling. It has the right blend of useful illustrations from many types of applications and of clean mathematics, without overdoing it in terms of abstraction. It is expensive but I don't regret my purchase.

Chaos is cropping up everywhere these days. As it becomes ever more apparent that Newtonian mechanics is inadequate for modeling nonlinear systems, or systems that have too many degrees of freedom to handle easily, researchers in all fields are turning toward nonlinear dynamics as a refreshing alternative. This is a paradigm shift à la Kuhn, and Klaus Mainzer guides us through it with an astounding range of historical and scientific knowledge. From quantum physics to consciousness to economics, Mainzer shows us how thinking complexly can solve problems over which standard, linear thinking continually stumbles. Instead of simplifying, however, Mainzer revels in the complexity of complexity, so the reader should be prepared for advanced concepts in such varied fields as mathematics, physics, and economics. Difficult, but worthwhile reading.

        Book Description

The theory of nonlinear, complex systems has become by now a proven problem-solving approach in the natural sciences. And it is now also recognized that many if not most of our social, ecological, economical and political problems are essentially of a global, complex and nonlinear nature. And it is now further accepted than any holistic perspective of the human mind and brain can hardly be achieved by any other approach. In this wide-ranging, scholarly but very concise treatment, physicist, computer scientist and philosopher Klaus Mainzer discusses, in essentially nontechnical language, the common framework behind these ideas and challenges. Emphasis is given to the evolution of new structures in natural and cultural systems and we are lead to see clearly how the new integrative approach can give insights not available from traditional reductionistic methods. The fifth edition enlarges and revises almost all sections and supplements an entirely new chapter on the complexity of economic systems.

From the reviews of the fourth edition:

"This book is ambitious, incredibly erudite with 22 pages of references, and is indisputably clearly and beautifully written and illustrated. It is perfectly suited to a first course on the science of complexity. Even beginners and young graduate students will have something to learn from this book." (Andre Hautot, Physicalia, Vol. 57 (3), 2005)

"All-in-all, this highly recommended book is a wonderful resource for intuitive basic ideas in the need of rigorous formulation." (Albert A. Mullin, Zentralblatt MATH, vol. 1046, 2004)

"Readers of this book will enjoy Mainzer's exposition, which is based on a tight coupling between classical and historical concepts from Plato and Aristotle to modern, mathematical and physical developments . Every chapter begins with a section designed to orient the reader to the perspective of philosophical developments through the ages pertinent to the topic at hand. The author takes pains to point out essential differences between classical science and the science of complexity. Thinking in Complexity is an outstandingly readable book." 4 out of 5 stars very difficult subject; but intriguing ideas.......2006-01-19

        [A review of the 4th Edition, 2003.]
This book studies complexity and nonlinearity across a diverse range of applications. Much of the book revolves around organic evolution and the evolution of a sentient mind. And how complexity analysis might aid in the understanding of these fields. Not the least in devising deeper forms of artificial intelligence.

So intriguing techniques like cellular automata and neural networks are studied. There is a fair amount of speculation as to how these and other topics might ultimately relate to sentience or consciousness. But the musings are grounded in solid science. Like that of a Hopfield system or a Boltzmann machine. This 4th edition is a good reflection of the boundaries of our knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars understandable highest level science with cultural backg.......1999-06-16

The book covers a broad field - all parts in close connection with the others and its background in modern science and historic cultural connotations. The theoretical aspects are merged with lively explanations. Readable for the non-specialist, understandable for the average science-educated and meaningful for the specilaists, both in physical systems science and in philosophy. A top-notch guide through this topic of multidisciplinary novelties.

3 out of 5 stars Full but turgid catalogue of complexity phenomena.......1998-02-25

This book is an extremely well-informed cataloguing of the many areas of human experience in which self-organisation and complexity phenomena play an important role. However the writer's style becomes very heavy as a result of transferring German constructions into English - so much so that I was forced to skim read many sections.

        Book Description

"Markov modeling has long been accepted as a fundamental and powerful technique for the fault tolerance analysis of mission-critical applications. However, the elaborate computations required have often made Markov modeling too time-consuming to be of practical use on these complex systems. With this hands-on tool, designers can use the Markov modeling technique to analyze safety, reliability, maintainability, and cost-effectiveness factors in the full range of complex systems in use today.

Featuring ground-breaking simulation software and a comprehensive reference manual, MARKOV MODELING FOR RELIABILITY ANALYSIS helps system designers surmount the mathematical computations that have previously prevented effective reliability analysis. The text and software compose a valuable self-study tool that is complete with detailed explanations, examples, and a library of Markov models that can be used for experiments and as derivations for new simulation models. The book details how these analyses are conducted, while providing hands-on instruction on how to develop reliability models for the full range of system configurations.

Computer-Aided Rate Modeling and Simulation (CARMS) software is an integrated modeling tool that includes a diagram-based environment for model setup, a spreadsheet like interface for data entry, an expert system link for automatic model construction, and an interactive graphic interface for displaying simulation results."

        1. Book is for new complex computer systems. However I use in support of an aging Naval Aviation Aircraft ( A/C ). I am no mathematician, however with my trusty ERA books on Calculus, Statistics, and Vector Calculus, I was able to " tread the waters ". I have performed many, many Reliability & Support Analysis, and CARMS provides another very usefull tool. Math majors should have no difficulty with the subject matter, however applying this is the high light of the book;
        2. I have been very unsucessfull in trying to reach the authors to make recommendations on the next revision. I request assistance, and will leave my employment phone number below. Thanks.

          Book Description

The study of kinetic equations related to gases, semiconductors, photons, traffic flow, and other systems has developed rapidly in recent years because of its role as a mathematical tool in many applications in areas such as engineering, meteorology, biology, chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, and pharmacy. Written by leading specialists in their respective fields, this book presents an overview of recent developments in the field of mathematical kinetic theory with a focus on modeling complex systems, emphasizing both mathematical properties and their physical meaning.

The overall presentation covers not only modeling aspects and qualitative analysis of mathematical problems, but also inverse problems, which lead to a detailed assessment of models in connection with their applications, and to computational problems, which lead to an effective link of models to the analysis of real-world systems. The book is divided into three parts: Part I presents fundamental aspects of the Boltzmann equation; Part II deals with the modeling of semiconductor devices as well as related applications and computational topics; Part III covers a variety of applications in physics and the natural sciences, offering a range of very different conceivable developments of mathematical kinetic theory.

Transport Phenomena and Kinetic Theory is an excellent self-study reference for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners working in pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and engineering. The work may be used in courses or seminars on selected topics in transport phenomena or applications of the Boltzmann equation.
