Book Description

This dictionary documents alchemical symbolism from the early centuries AD to the late-twentieth century, for use by historians of literary culture, philosophy, science and the visual arts, and readers interested in alchemy and hermeticism. Each entry includes a definition of the symbol, giving the literal (physical) and figurative (spiritual) meanings, an example of the symbol used in alchemical writing, and a quotation from a literary source. There are fifty visual images of graphic woodcuts, copperplate engravings and hand-painted emblems, some reproduced here for the first time.

4 out of 5 stars workhorse for literary alchemy.......2005-09-21

this book is fun, well written, and detailed. most useful for literary and artistic readings of alchemy, or "comparative religion" type studies, less so for detailed info on the protoscientific aspects (try Lawrence Principe). I'm using this book for a class on alchemy I'm teaching this semester. It's a good way to approach the rich terminology and symbolism, though it can get a bit repetetive as the same idea gets explained in different ways in different articles. Could have better footnotes and cross-referencing, but very useful for the casual reader or beginning student who is just becoming familiar with a confusing and difficult set of terms and images.

5 out of 5 stars The Philosopher's Stone.......2000-04-25

This is a superb book for anyone interested in alchemy. For those interested in alchemy and its connections to literature-- it's even better. The articles are bursting with relevant information and insight into this often perplexing subject matter in an accessible, readable style. A "must have" for anyone interested in alchemy. The only thing I don't like is the price, which may prove prohibitive for some.

1 out of 5 stars Highly disappointed!.......2007-07-16

I didn't get the above-mentioned item. It arrived not on 06.07.2007 but on 29.06.2006, when I was on my business trip. Actually, I was misled by your e-mail to me which said that the book would be delivered within the time interval from 06.07.2007 and 21.07.2007. When I came back from the business trip and tried to take the book from my post office they told me that my item had been already sent back to the sender, that is to your company, I guess.

5 out of 5 stars Good job by Waite.......2006-03-18

Waite usually does a good job of translations. He generally seems to be the most objective of 19th Century esotericists and occultists.

Paracelsus was and is a huge influence on the subject of alchemy. Anyone who is interested in alchemy or the philosophy of the Renaissance would get much from this book.

The edition I have is the paperback reprint from Kessinger. In my experience, their reprints are of decent quality, clear, and readable. They make difficult-to-find texts affordable. I have several books published by them, and they are all of decent quality.

1 out of 5 stars It belongs in the time in which it was written.......2006-01-02

Got them (both parts), glanced through and threw them both in the trash right there and then. The man wrote a treatise on the long life and yet he couldn't preserve his own to an old ripe age... Paracelsus is the name he assumed later in life - meaning superior Celsus (a Roman physician). That alone, in my eyes, warrants the treatment of his works in the way he treated the works of others before him. I have to give him - he was a prolific writer and some stuff he got right. But if you string words together randomly, after much writing you'll get something right.... for some this might be a very entertaining read but not for me. I can't stand mixing religion with science and his audacity in selling his thoughts/beliefs for facts knows no bounds.

5 out of 5 stars Be sure to follow this up with Part 2!.......2005-10-04

Paracelus is my personal favorite of the "famous alchemists." He took an approach that diverged greatly from his contemporaries: "harmony of the man is the microcosm and Nature the macrocosm." He veered from soul purification and concentrated on how bodies got out of natural balance and how he could cure them. He summarized his own views by saying: "Many have said of Alchemy, that is for making of gold and silver. For me such is not the aim, but to consider only what virtue and power may lie in medicines." And I am sure that many of the pharmaceutical giants today wholeheartedly agree with him! The work is fascinating as well as the man. This book as well as Part 2 bring him fully to light for all of us to appreciate!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection.......2001-07-08

The Hermetic and Alccemical Writings of Paracelsus the Great is an AWESOME collection of Alchemical/Hermetic material. It was my first "Paracelsian" book, and probably not my last. If you have little or no Alchemical/Hermetic knowledge though, I think you should wait before buying this one.

5 out of 5 stars Disagree with review from "A Reader" dated March 31, 2004.......2004-11-14

I wholeheartedly disagree with the above March 31, 2004 review.
I am a physician who is planning to start up my own Energy Healing practice in my home in January 2005. I got "Alchemical Healing" 2 months ago. I read the book in 2 days and found it to be one of the most practical and helpful Healing guides that I have ever had the pleasure of reading over these last 37 years I have been practicing Medicine. I liked the book so much that I flew down to Asheville, NC last weekend (November 6/7, 2004) to take Nicki's Alchemical Healing Part I course. It was magic. Alchemical Healing is not only "what the doctor ordered"..but for anyone interested in practically using the powerful energies of Nature around us. I particularly enjoyed Nicki's Initiation into connecting to and using the Elements for healing purposes. I look forward to using many of Nicki's techniques in my private healing practice.

3 out of 5 stars Good overview - not deep.......2004-04-01

Nicki covers lots of ground, it's almost like a stew. A little Reiki, Alchemy, Shamanism, Intuitive work, spirit helpers, etc. She does a nice job of introducing concepts and making the material very accessible. This is a great introduction to a practical spirituality in general.

However, if you have had some experience in a few of these areas then Nicki really does not have a work with depth to make this a really meaningful resource. She does not go enough into Alchemy or Shamanism or the Elements for example to give you insights beyond a cursory and somewhat shallow introduction.

While I have great respect for her and what is trying to do in this synthesis, I feel that she spends too much time on fluff and not enough in the details. She does not really provide enough to successfully give Alchemical Healing it's unique fingerprint as a healing modality.

A great beginners read but not that useful for someone who wants to get into these topics in detail.

As examples see the following books for more information on some of Nicki's topics:

5 out of 5 stars absorbing, informative guide to healing and transformation.......2004-02-20

You may wish to acquaint yourself with the inspired writing of an internationally known healer, Nicki Scully. We readers find, in Alchemical Healing, clear and practical descriptions of healing methods we can ourselves learn, in order to produce seemingly miraculous results without doctors' appointments and expensive prescriptions. Nicki makes no claim that alchemical healing methods should replace traditional medical care, however, and she has found that both often work well together.

Nicki Scully's courageous journeys to gain knowledge and practical experience of ancient healing techniques -- coupled with her eagerness to share them with people who can know her and her work through her books, lectures, teachings, and guided trips to Egypt, Peru, and Tibet -- are legendary. She works with healing allies: totemic animal spirit guides, crystals, herbs, sound, the elements of fire, air, water, earth, and many others. For her there is no narrow, right way to accomplish personal transformation and healing, and there are as many ways to do so as there are individuals on the planet. She covers many, but certainly not all, and emphasizes the ones she uses most in her own practice.

Her life's work is now beautifully put forth in Alchemical Healing. It is an amazing book -- electrifying and inspiring -- from Nicki's pertinent and fascinating personal story to healings of critical illness and injury through a number of modalities. The anecdotal stories of healing are often so stirring that they had me in tears.

The healing methods are described in detail, with exercises and initiation rituals for the reader, who may well wish to become a healer after reading the first one or two chapters of the book. The steps are easy to understand and follow, with essential details emphasized to ensure the safest, most positive results for the healer and individuals receiving the healing.

I expect to keep this book within easy reach as a treasured reference and guide for the rest of my life.

5 out of 5 stars a practical guide, great stories........2004-02-08

This book represents an amazing feat of synthesis and inspired understanding. What Nicki Scully has created with her Alchemical Healing work, drawing from the wisdom traditions of Ancient Egypt and Native America (and others, such as Reiki and Huna) is a comprehensive and integrated school of energetic healing and transformative inner work. This is not some trendy new age amalgam, but a lifework emerging from decades of dedicated practice, life experience and intuitive inquiry. The book is filled with Nicki's amazing experiences and applications of the work, and the moving stories of how this work came to her through life experience, master teachers and spirit guides.

Most importantly, this book is a practical guide containing exercises, practices, initiations and techniques for energetic healing that anyone can do. The initiations are a key (and in my experience, rare) feature of the book- simple rituals, when followed with conscious intention, that open doors to perception and energy, as well as forge inner connections to your own totems and guides. I can say from experience that these initiations create effective channels of communication and turn on energetic capabilities that persist and become reliable tools for all kinds of inner work. If you are interested in empowering your spiritual work with practical tools that go way beyond the merely psychological, this book can hook you up. For those unfamiliar with working with inner guidance, these initiations will be a revelation to the knowledge that more and more of us are awakening to: we have wise, compassionate, loving help available to us. We have spiritual companionship and partnership available to us.

Alchemical Healing covers a broad array of topics from basic healing techniques using the Universal Life Force, the Elements, and Spirit Allies. Self-preparation for the healer, including the initiations, invocations and forgiveness- a necessary step to releasing unhealthy attachments- are all fully covered. A large chapter covering specific techniques and application of the work as well as a truly essential chapter on healing ethics to round out the basic healing course. The advanced course introduces you to Thoth's Caduceus, the non-physical element Akasha, healing with sound and music, advanced practical techniques and self-healing. The final section gives you the spiritual heart of the work, which can be summarized as guidance, gratitude, compassion and love. Further, if you wish to work more deeply with Alchemical Healing, there is a list of authorized teachers and healers at the back of the book.

Clearly, I am impressed with and highly recommend this book, especially to those dedicated to a spiritual path and healers of all kinds. I have had a long-standing relationship to this work (as one of many collaborators to it's development), and it has been of inestimable value to my path of dedication to Spirit. It is an advanced work, that while clearly and non-technically written, might be too expansive for some new to spirituality. It challenges many cultural and religious axioms, but that is part of what makes it a pithy, substantial book and not some superficial feel-good that everyone will be comfortable with. A guaranteed mind-expanding read.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting blend of healing modalities.......2003-12-10

This interesting work combines the techniques of energy healing and shamanism with alchemical principles in order to provide a practical guide to physical treatment, psychological counselling and spiritual transformation.

Many disciplines are integrated into the author's healing modality, including Reiki, Huna, elements, symbols and archetypes, plants, crystals, sound and colour healing. Distance healing and psychic protection are also discussed.

Other interesting topics include the ethics of healing, the blending of traditions, self-healing (especially where the healer is concerned), psychic surgery and how to obtain help from the spirit realm. There are many exercises, meditations and attunements throughout the book that teach the healer or prospective healer how to access the universal life force.

Alchemical Healing is a very thorough investigation of and guide to holistic healing that provides a cohesive programme despite drawing on so many different traditions and techniques. The book contains impressive black and white illustrations and concludes with two appendices and an index.

Book Description

A comprehensive alchemical guide to plant extractions and their health benefits

• Shows how spagyric methods “open” medicinal plants completely to release powerful healing properties

• Provides a history and philosophy of spagyrics that reveal why Western medicine fails to recognize the full benefit to health offered by plants

• Connects spagyrics to classical alchemical, hermetic, and ayurvedic traditions

The practice of spagyrics is the application of ancient alchemical working methods to the preparation of tinctures, essences, and other products from medicinal plants. While ordinary tinctures and infusions use only a part of the great curative potential of plants, spagyric methods “open” medicinal plants completely to reveal their more powerful healing properties. Drawing on the rich imagery and symbolism of ancient source materials, Manfred M. Junius describes these methods in great detail, showing readers how to prepare plant remedies alchemically for their own use as well as imparting a knowledge of the ideological world in which alchemistic and hermetic thought flowered. Spagyrics includes the Plant Magistery of Paracelsus and the Life Elixir recipe of Andreas Libavius among its historic techniques as well as a wealth of scientific information that demonstrates the greater efficacy of alchemical methods of plant essence extraction. This classic source text preserves the nearly forgotten but highly valuable methods of this true hermetic art for preparing natural remedies.

Ancient source materials and images compliment discussions which describe step-by-step methods for preparing plant remedies alchemically, blending history and science with new age beliefs and methods in a classic resource perfect for any new age collection strong in hermetic art or natural healing.

    Book Description

Michael Maier was a 17th-century alchemist and physician to the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. Between 1614 and his death in 1622, Maier published a number of alchemical works, of which Atalanta Fugiens was undoubtedly the richest and most important. First published in 1617, it is one of the finest alchemical emblem books and unique in its own right. Michael Maier's work is richly illustrated with original prints by M. Merian; each of the 50 emblems presented consists of a motto, print, epigram, and a three-part musical setting of the epigram, followed by an exposition of its meaning. In the new publication of this important 17th-century work, Dr. H. M. E. de Jong translates the mottos and epigrams of the original 50 emblems and provides a summary of both Maier's exposition and a commentary on each emblem. She discuisses the meaning and importance of the Atalanta Fugiens, the sources Maier used, and the mutual relationships between the emblems. She also includes an additional 30 alchemical engravings that explain her research, including several hard-to-find foldouts reproduced here in this volume. De Jong shows how Maier borrowed mottos from old alchemical sources and that the emblems have a number of meanings and express ideas from alchemy, medicine, and the Rosicrucian system. The inter-relationships that can be shown to exist between the emblems give an added depth to the meaning of each.

      Book Description

In this seventeenth-century Chinese novel, Han Xiangzi, best known as one of the Eight Immortals, seeks and achieves immortality and then devotes himself to converting his materialistic, politically ambitious Confucian uncle, Han Yu (a real historical figure), to Daoism. Written in lively vernacular prose interspersed with poems and songs, the novel takes its readers over vast distances across China, to the heavens, and into the underworld. Readers listen to debates among Confucians, Daoists, and Buddhists and witness trials of faith and the performance of magical feats. Similar in style, content, and vintage to the popular Buddhist novel Journey to the West (also known in English as Monkey), The Story of Han Xiangzi uses colorful characters, twists of plot, witty dialogue, and action suitable for a superhero comic book to convey its religious message—that worldly life is ephemeral and that true contentment can be found only through Daoist cultivation. This is the first translation into any Western language of Han Xiangzi quanzhuan (literally, The Complete Story of Han Xiangzi). On one level, the novel is a delightful adventure; on another, it is serious theology. Although The Story of Han Xiangzi's irreverent attitude toward the Confucian establishment prevented its being taken seriously by literary critics in imperial China, it has remained popular among Chinese readers for four centuries. Philip Clart's Introduction outlines the Han Xiangzi story cycle, presents Yang Erzeng in his social context, assesses the literary merits and religious significance of the text, and explores the theory and practice of inner alchemy. This unabridged translation will appeal to students of Chinese literature, readers who enjoy international fiction, and readers with an interest in Daoism.

4 out of 5 stars Continuation of CW12.......2006-06-06

Jung explored alchemy as if it were a mystery novel--relishing every clue, interpreting (nominally) each symbol as it arose. His conclusion that it paralleled his psychological observations & model satisfied his incredible yearning to know that he wasn't crazy or a voice crying in the wilderness--yeah, verily, the alchemists pursued the same goal though in a slightly different way--vindicating Jung's quest for individuation=personal salvation. Thus, Jung's love for alchemy. It's unfortunate that even so-called scientists have ego's so wounded that they disavow their roots: chemists tend to downplay alchemy as astronomers downplay astrology--denigrating their roots. This shows an appalling lack of courage--something Jung had no lack of. Just think of what courage it must have taken for Jung to write about alchemy as having psychological truth embedded in its very heart. Yet he wrote 3 books worth on it CW12 (Psychology & Alchemy), CW13 (Alchemical Studies), & CW14 (Mysterium Coniunctionis). I'm in awe of his courage, let alone of his genius. Try reading some alchemy works yourself--if you think Jung is hard to read, think twice. Alchemical works are far more difficult. It took Jung's supreme effort to decipher them. So, if this work seems obtuse to you (& it is), consider how obtuse it was to Jung. Having studied some alchemy independently (e.g. Mutis Liber, Secret Symbols of the Rosicrucians, etc.) it seems only natural that the universal symbology should be reflected in transcendental alchemy, kabbalah, Jungian psychology, Campbell's mythology, & (amazingly enough) Tibetan Buddhism--mandalas. Thus, an incredible multiplicity of sources support Jung's model of the collective unconscious. A true scientist is a "walking question mark." Despite Thomas Kuhn's difference in definition, the essence remains the same--true scientists follow the KID (knowledge, information, & data) not the dying paradigm. Jung's new paradigm of universality has yet to be seriously challenged.

4 out of 5 stars Not quintessential, but good........2001-02-12

"The really important psychic facts can neither be measured, weighed, nor seen in a test tube or under a microscope. They are therefore supposedly indeterminable, in other words, they must be left to people who have an inner sense of them, just as colours must be shown to the seeing and not to the blind." (Jung p. 238) This sentence reflects much of what this book is about. It highlights the drive behind Jung's attempt to make the invisible visible through an analysis of alchemical thought; it shows his complicated sentence structure and presents some of the hurdles one will have to jump in order to comprehend Jung's work on Alchemy. The preceding volume 12, "Psychology and Alchemy," would serve as a good introduction to this volume, and volume 14, "Mysterium Coniunctionis," might make Jung's thesis easier to comprehend.

This volume of collected works contains his commentary to "The Secret of The Golden Flower" which is almost useless without the actual Golden Flower text. It also contains Jung's analysis and commentary on some of the major metaphors of Alchemy.

According to Jung, Alchemy was the precursor of Western psychology, and that alchemists projected their mental/spiritual states unto the inanimate objects and processes of Alchemy. This work examines these projections in the light of modern consciousness and with the process of individuation in mind. `

Stripped to its essence, Jung's psychological theory states that humans have an unknown meta-consciousness that some will discover through a process he called individuation. This is a recapitulation of the ideas found in all religions, but is here represented by Jung in the terms of modern Western Culture as a scientific analysis of the Soul through an analysis of Alchemy.

Several years ago I read through this text without a clue as to what Jung was talking about, but found some of his observations noteworthy. About two years ago I had some experiences that made the insights contained in this book valuable, and I found that my previous reading allowed me to understand what I had read retrospectively. It also helped me in understanding aspects of Chinese Alchemy as metaphor. It is not recommended to casual readers.

      5 out of 5 stars Jung's pioneering researches...........2000-06-02

...into the world of alchemy made the world aware of how rich a symbol-system had been lost from time out of mind. It was Jung who discovered that alchemy, a "chymical" art compensatory to the Christian emphasis on spirit over matter, also represented a projected psychology of the unconscious; it was, in fact, a forerunner of depth psychology itself.

      Book Description

The first working guide to the creation and application of plant-based compounds for ritual, magical, and healing purposes based on the Druidic tradition.

      • Provides step-by-step instructions for processing and transforming 70 plant energies and essences into working magical compounds.

      • Demonstrates the application of these compounds in a sex magic ritual.

      • Written by a practicing Druid with more than 40 years in the tradition.

The ancient rites and lore of the Druids have always utilized a gentle alchemy to convert plant essences into potent compounds for working magical rituals. Through the respectful seduction of a plant's virtue, Druid alchemists are able to release and collect the latent energy, physical attributes, and magical capacities of that plant. The Druid then applies a series of processes to the acquired essence in order to maximize its power prior to its application in magical ritual.

In this first-ever working guide to the principles, processes, and practical application of druidic plant magic, Jon G. Hughes shares the combined wisdom of his ancestral lineage. Celtic Plant Magic includes basic alchemical theory, instructions for creating all necessary tools, descriptions of magical compounds and their uses, and how to prepare oneself for working with plant essences. The healing and magical properties of more than 70 plants and trees are provided. The author then applies this information to a Celtic sex ritual, demonstrating how these compounds are used in specific magic and ritual practices. Celtic Plant Magic is a valuable manual for anyone wishing to harness the magical potential of plant energy.

      5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2004-04-26

If you are at all interested in how the DRuids and Celtis use the trees and plants in their habitat then this book is essential reading.

A perfect reference book for those whishing to work in the old ways, with a whole load of detail and information.

As with his other works, Hughes has a way of explaining complicated things in a simple way and I found his instructions easy enough to follow.

A profound conservationist, Hughes also gives an excellent account of renewable resources and a fascinating look at the essences derived from the plants around us.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in plant lore and things druidic
