The text contains the source code for two useful programs, ZAMS (for constructing chemically homogeneous zero-age main sequence models) and PULS (to study the seismological properties of the ZAMS models). Some chapters include exercises. The diskette can be used on any computer with a FORTRAN compiler.

Great fundamental Astronomy Text.......2005-10-26
As an amateur astronomer who loves theory and the math that goes with it, I found this text to be utterly exquisite for helping me recapture a lot of my old math skills. While the real amount of calculus needed in the text was not overtly taxing, I did find the text very useful indeed for requiring the use of a strong algebra background, along with lots of Trig, and of course, geometry and Calculus.
The problems in this book were intriguing, challenging and just awesome in every respect. For example, I found myself for the first time since I can recall, drawing Trig and geometrical diagrams to assist in visualizing a particular problem as an aid toward the ultimate answer! These problems, all of them mathematical in nature, are extremely interesting and encourage you to make a sketch of the phenomenon at hand in order to arrive at a solution.
And in addition to the problems, the text has very useful solved examples that show you how a particular problem calculation is reached. You really do learn a lot just from these examples.
I think the book might have benefitted from having even more exercises in it, which to me would make it even more useful for a semester university course in introductory Astrophysics. Instead of having 73 exercises, perhaps 150-200 problems would have been more 'whetting' to an appetite like mine is for Astronomy. But, I can heartily recommend that this book, if completed and all the problems worked, will definitely prepare one for a more challenging text with more Math and problems!
The authors could only improve this thing with more text length and more problems, as far as I am concerned. The appendixes and Tables in the back give the student a little bit of good background to the Math needed in the book as well.
This text is a complete WINNER in the category of INTRODUCTORY TEXTBOOKS for the beginning course in college Astronomy!
A Fundamental Astronomy Reference.......2005-07-01
Fundamental Astronomy is both the title and an excellent description of the content of this handsome hard back volume. For the book to reach the fourth edition, it must be hitting a niche in the market. The preface to the first edition in 1987 identifies that market as a "university textbook for a first course in astronomy" which is also suited for serious amateurs who "find the popular texts too trivial". In my opinion, that description from the original preface is "spot on" and makes this volume a must-buy for any serious amateur looking for a comprehensive overview of matters astronomical.
The book covers the basics of astronomy, stellar astrophysics and mainly features of our Universe which are relatively close-at-hand. Large scale structure and cosmology are less than ten percent of the content. It covers all topics to considerable depth, far more so than most publications aimed at a general readership. It is mathematical, although the maths is present largely for academic completeness, and can be skimmed or by-passed as required without reducing to any great extent, the utility provided. Its usefulness for education purposes is enhanced by worked examples in each section followed by exercises.
Within its 19 major sections, it contains much relevant and dare I say fundamental material. The book is well illustrated with mainly monochrome plates which are relevant to the subject at hand plus many carefully constructed, concise graphics and illustrations.
This is a comprehensive reference volume, which will age but slowly on any serious amateur's book shelf, as the subject matter is largely timeless.
A Great Astronomy Textbook!.......2004-01-24
.This is a great and comprehensive primary textbook for a student. It is massive introduction to the huge field of astronomical study, and as such contains much of the basic concepts and plenty of hands-on exercises.
I have been mainly using the Finnish version, but having also browsed through the English one I can safely say that the two differ from each other only minimally and thus my experiences with the original hold true with the translation too.
As an end note I might point out, that even though having studied astronomy at the university, it is by no means my area of expertise: I'm majoring in linguistics. That alone, I think, proves how clear and well-written this tome really is: even an Arts students can read it and actually understand and learn! ;)
Fundamental to students.......2001-01-10
I am an astronomy student, i like so much this book, because i can laern all about the fundamental ideas in astrophisics, is so easy to read, so clear and it have a wonderful content.
The items of this book are so importants to any student in astronomy, and is very interesting to the other people, if they like study the universe.
I like so much the part about CCD, and the study of spectrography, I realy want to have this book with me.

Frolov and Novikov's Black Hole Physics.......2000-04-09
I referenced these authors and also Klapdor-Kleingrothaus and Zuber (see my review of their book) in my paper on Quantum Gravity delivered before Professor Kursunoglu's Orbis Scientiae Quantum Gravity conference in December, 1999 (see my review of Kursunoglu). The Editor has summarized the book in his usual excellent way, and here I should just add that there is much material in this book not covered in others, including relationships with 2+1 dimensional quantum gravity (see my review of Carlip, black holes inside monopoles, dilatons, quantum hair, etc. Everyone should buy this book and, if necessary, hire a consultant or tutor to translate it into more simple English.

Nice Text.......2001-07-02
Modern Stellar Astrophysics was a nice book. It was organized very well and presented the material in an orderly fashion. I thought that it lacked depth though. It gave many concepts, but they lacked mathematical examples to go with those concepts. A good book for people who already understand modern physics, but for those without a deep understanding of modern physics it will leave many open questions. Lastly, the homework questions at the end of the chapters resembled those examples throughtout the chapters themselves very closely and even identically, thus answering them takes absolutely no analytical skills just mere copying.
An Excellent Comprehensive Introduction to the subject.........2000-10-09
This is an excellent introduction to Stellar Astrophysics, covering from the very start the essential concepts needed to undertake the subject, and gradually building up untill a nice introductory level is achieved. The book is well organized: divided into two blocks, starts by setting a solid basis upon which later presents the subject. In the first and introductory part, the essential astronomical concepts are explained, and in the second part the author gets into the actual Astrophysics of Stars. The book is pleasant on several levels; conceptually, coherently and aesthetically, all this while making use of a clear, straightforward matheticall formalism which is simple enough to follow. It is well suited for an introductory course at the undergraduate level, and one of the few books which actually bridges the gap between the high-level available pieces and the general public oriented literature on the subject.

Most stars appear to show some degree of magnetic activity. For example, the varying magnetic field of the Sun shows up in the familiar sun-spot cycle. Radio and X-ray pulsars are enormously dense, rapidly rotating neutron stars which carry steady magnetic fields that are far stronger than the average magnetic field of the Sun. Likewise, many uncollapsed stars behave like rotating permanent magnets. Furthermore, magnetic fields may partly control the formation of new stars as well as the spectacular behaviour observed in galactic nuclei. Stellar magnetism is therefore a rapidly develoing field of astrophysics, and this book has grown out of the lifelong work of an outstanding researcher in the area. It is an authoritative account with broad astronomical scope, and its thorough, careful, and well-argued approach make it a fine addition to the professional literature. Most of the important topics are treated in mathematical depth with reference given to other relevant literature. Some of the studies, especially those on accretion discs, dynamos, and winds, are applicable to galaxies and galactic nuclei. As well as acting as a professional reference and guide to current thinking, this book will be of interest to graduate students, for whom it shows how the subject has developed and leads on to research problems in the field.

This book is the final one in a series of three texts which together provide a modern, complete and authoritative account of our present knowledge of the stars. It discusses the internal structure and the evolution of stars, and is completely self-contained. There is an emphasis on the basic physics governing stellar structure and the basic ideas on which our understanding of stellar structure is based. The book also provides a comprehensive discussion of stellar evolution. Careful comparison is made between theory and observation, and the author has thus provided a lucid and balanced introductory text for the student. As for volumes 1 and 2, volume 3 is self-contained and can be used as an independent textbook. The author has not only taught but has also published many original papers in this subject. Her clear and readable style should make this text a first choice for undergraduate and beginning graduate students taking courses in astronomy and particularly in stellar astrophysics.

Excellent book .......2007-06-22
This is one of those rare books bridging the gap between undergraduate and more advanced graduated books. The book is not very big in size, but it is certainly dense. I goes straight to the point and allows very little deviation from its main topic: basic stellar structure and evolution. The book is easy to follow. Uses lots of formulae, but mathematics are kept at a basic level and most important, developments are always complete. Little is left for the imagination of the reader. That contributes to make it a pleasure to read. The book is part of a series, but it is self-contained and the frequent references to volume 2 are not too much annoying.
The book covers lots of stellar topics from the very beginning, but it is focused mainly in main sequence stars and red giants. Stars formation is treated only superficially and black holes are simply avoided; i.e. general relativity background is not required.
The book is always close to the observational phenomena but does not overwhelm the reader with lots of observational data. The first part of the book is oriented to settling the background of the basic stellar equations. The second part builds on that to draw conclusions and compare the results with observational phenomena.
I strongly recommend this book for readers who are not experts in the subject, but would like to advance one more step into stellar astrophysics. It would be also a good reference book for a one semester course in stellar evolution.
Excellent overview of a fascinating topic.......2002-04-27
The third volume in this series is an excellent text. It provides a good level of detail (ie, no hand-waving and no obsession with minutiae), moving efficiently through convection, energy generation, basic stellar structure equations, methods for calculating the models, evolution and tests of the models, star formation. It is worth noting that this book has the clearest description of degeneracy I have yet come across; this is a topic where many authors wave their hands and give a footnote, but she has taken the time to clearly delineate issues that many students find puzzling. This is a REAL text, so come prepared with the usual background in calculus, quantum, and thermodynamics.
