Book Description

Building small can be a sign of higher ambitions, and those who take the time to peruse these pages will undoubtedly grow to appreciate that creating a small home can be an amazingly positive and creative act, one which can enhance life in surprising ways. The Very Small Home presents stunning design advances in Japan. Eighteen recent houses, from ultramodern to Japanese rustic, are explored in depth. Particular emphasis is given to what the author call the Big Idea-the overarching concept that does the most to make the house feel more spacious than it actually is. Among the Big Ideas introduced here are ingenious sources of natural light, well-thought-out atriums, snug but functional kitchens, unobtrusive partitions, and free-flowing circulation paths. An introduction by the author puts the house designs in the context of lifestyle trends, and highlights their shared characteristics. For each project, the intentions of the designers and occupants are examined. The result is a very human sensibility that runs through the book. A glimpse of the dreams and aspirations that these unique homes represent and that belies their apparent modesty. The second half of the book is devoted to illustrating the special features in the homes, from clever storage and kitchen designs, to ingenious skylights and nooks. As with his earlier Small Spaces, Azby Brown has given home owners, designers, and architects a fascinating new collection of thought-provoking ideas.

gorgeous and inspired houses. the creativity will amaze you ^_^
you will probably be jealous of the people who actually live in the houses in the book.

2 out of 5 stars 1700sqft are BIG and luxurious in Hong Kong.......2007-04-18

"Small" is a matter of perspective, especially if you live in a 700sqft apartment and expect to get some ideas to use in small 300-450sqft apartments on Hong Kong Island.

2 out of 5 stars It's ok but not to Canadian code.......2007-04-04

The book is full of ideas but most not really practical when it comes to code and fire safety issues in canada. I was expecting more out of this book.......... slightly dissapointing.

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-14

Japanese design is different to Western design in terms of living requirements.

I now have a much deeper understanding of the creation of small living spaces that work well rather than building bigger for re-sale or convention.

Hopefully, my own home (when built) will be an east-west fusion that I will enjoy for a long time.

This book is part of my collection on 'small home' design and one which I return to when I need to remind myself about scaling down.

Book Description

This extraordinarily readable, cohesive text presents twenty-first century astronomy as a dynamic story of theory building and theory testing, as a fascinating process of observation and discovery. The authors' primary goal is to build students' scientific literacy by emphasizing how science works and why it is relevant, rather than by cataloging a large mass of individual details. With a clear focus on core concepts and carefully crafted pedagogical aids, 21st Century Astronomy chronicles scientists at work on the most important questions about the Universe, highlighting the excitement of making new discoveries and the puzzlement created by new lines of inquiry.

"One of the most exciting things about astronomy is that sometimes you get up in the morning and discover that we know fundamental things about the Universe that we didn't know the day before. The recent release of the results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellite observatory are one of those historical moments."—Jeff Hester

5 out of 5 stars A Favorite Astronomy Textbook.......2004-11-20

This is my third year teaching introductory astronomy. I've used three textbooks. Last year I got a copy of 21st Century Astronomy free--publishers are always trying to get professors to adopt their textbooks. Anyway, I really like this one. I haven't been able to use it in a class yet, but I would like to. I use it already to help me prepare for lectures. It's clear and don't talk down to the reader. Many textbooks get weighted down with frills, but not this one. The graphics are clear but never superfluous. In keeping with its title, it includes may up to date topics.

The other texts I have used are Kaufman, Seeds, and Bennet et al. (which I liked a lot too--it's a little bulky though.)

5 out of 5 stars Out of this world.......2003-08-06

Wonderful explanations. This is the astronomy book I never had as a kid! I'm a biologist and always thought I had the good fortune of working in the most interesting field. It sounds trite, but this book has opened my eyes to a universe out there. Now I even sort of understand black holes and the implications of relativity.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Open Space of Democracy.......2006-02-20

Terry Tempest Williams is amazingly articulate. This book while a short, easy read can be read over and over again as her messages can be applied to our everyday life. I bought five copies as this book makes a wonderful gift!

5 out of 5 stars DEEPLY ENGAGING.......2004-09-27

After interviewing Terry on radio, I am convinced that this gentle soul's strong undercurrent provides us with a rich new model of citizen involvement in this, our participatory government. Too many of us dismiss a deeper involvement in democracy with crusty cynicism - we feel ground down by the backhanded tactics used by government officials to strip us of our civil liberties and rape the earth's environment.

What Terry Tempest Williams proposes not only facilitates transformation within our democratic system, but by the simple act of learning to listen with open minds and hearts, we may receive one another's views on a very human scale. If we endeavor to connect in this manner, not only will we have a more functional democracy, we will become better human beings.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2004-09-18

I have not read a book in the last ten years that I would give this description to, but The Open Space of Democracy will or at least should go down as an American masterpiece, and a seminal contribution to environmental and political writing. I pre-ordered my copy direct from the publisher and so received and read, or rather devoured, it right after it was published. The triptych of essays in this volume are woven together and inseparable from each other in the way that Aldo Leopold's "Land Ethic" is inseparable from the rest of A Sand County Almanac.

This book maps a future for America and Americans that is luminous, hopeful, fierce, and prophetic all in one. Anyone who truly cares about our democracy and about the health of the natural world NEEDS to read this, be inspired by it, and take action in honor of it.

Book Description

Modern minimalism with a Japanese touch

Philippe Starck describes him as a "mystic in a country which is no longer mystic." Drew Philip calls his buildings "land art" that "struggle to emerge from the earth." He is the only architect to have won the discipline's four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize. His name is Tadao Ando, and he is one of the world's greatest living architects. Combining influences from Japanese tradition with the best of Modernism, Ando has developed a completely unique building aesthetic that makes use of concrete, wood, water, light, space, and nature in a way that has never been witnessed elsewhere in architecture.

This book provides the perfect introduction to Ando's work, including private homes, churches, museums, apartment complexes, and cultural spaces throughout Japan, and in France, Italy, Spain, and the USA.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Book from Taschen.......2007-01-22

This is the first Taschen Basic Architecture volume about a living architect. The earlier Taschen volumes have been about the Modernist masters such as Mies, Le Corbusier, Loos, Wright, Kahn and Neutra. If there is any living architect who can measure up to this Pantheon of Greats, it is Pritzker Prize winner, Tadao Ando.

Like the other volumes in this series, there is a short biographical essay, followed by short chapters that focus on key works. The German Publishing Company Taschen publishes some of the best architectural books. Their books are always of the highest quality and reasonably priced. At Ten Dollars, it is hard to imagine a better introduction to the works of one of the most important architects of the Twentieth Century. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well written, technical and managerial review.......2005-11-26

This is a well written book. It's almost as well written as the 9/11 Commission Report, which is high praise indeed. The report reviews how NASA's prior 30 years lead to the current state of the organization. With that context, it goes on to describe the specifics of the Columbia accident. Next follows the sleuthing that lead to an understanding of the causes of the accident, including enough techincal details for an engineer to be satisfied by the description. Finally, the report reviews the organization and culture of NASA contributed to poor safety management and an unclear relationship between the stated, accepted, and desired risks in what is inevitably a risky endeavour. Each section can be read independently of the others, as if intended for either thorough digestion or quick skimming by a busy Congressman.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, readable, and nicely illustrated.......2004-06-23

Although not cheap, this book offers a lot of value for the price. The bonus CD which includes many extra NASA documents as well as over 100 MB of video is also worth much of the purchase price.

The book is divided into two main parts. The first part discusses the technical investigation and the engineering analysis which determined the exact cause of failure. This was traced to a piece of insulating foam striking the right leading wing edge during the ascent, damaging the heat-resistant tiles and leading to a fatal thermal failure during reentry. In addition to the more narrow focus of finding the cause of the wing failure, you'll learn a lot of other interesting details about many other aspects of the shuttle design and engineering.

It's interesting to follow the chain of discovery and logic that led up to this conclusion about the wing failure, but the kicker was a sensor in the right wing that read a very high temperature before suddenly dropping to a suspiciously low one. This led investigators to conclude that the low temperature simply meant that the sensor had been destroyed by high heat moments before the Shuttle broke apart, but this interpretation wasn't arrived at until after the investigation. Even if they'd known at the time, there wasn't much that could have been done about it.

The book is surprisingly well illustrated with many color graphics, illustrations, and photos. The thermal diagrams showing the temperature variations in various colors are almost works of art by themselves. Although there's some technical jargon in the first part, overall, the book isn't difficult to read with a little perseverance, even if you're not technically inclined or an engineer yourself.

The last half of the book discusses the organizational aspects and political environment of NASA on which the shuttle disaster is ultimately blamed. The book details the numerous missed opportunities, procedural failures, and beaurocratic screw-ups that let up to the final disaster. There's some good history here about NASA and about some of the leading scientists and engineers and managers who were involved with the agency during these years, which makes interesting reading just by itself.

Last but not least, the book is printed on very high quality, glossy paper which makes the colorful illustrations even more attractive. Far from being just another government study of another failed beaurocracy, this book should be read by any manager in big business, semi-governmental agency, or government department or agency for the valuable lessons that were learned.

3 out of 5 stars Warning - the font is small.......2004-03-26

I boguht this book because I didn't want to sit in front of my computer and read the downloaded pdf file. I heard that this was less bulky as well as cheaper than the one from the government printing office. When I got it, I say why, the font is small. I wanted something comfortable to read. Also, the font is not a very high quality, the edges are jagged.

5 out of 5 stars Read the book!.......2004-03-24

I haven't actually read the Apogee edition, but I do have my own copy of the government edition, listened to the release press conference live, and again twice from the www.caib.us archive. I have burnt all the appendices and that one 203MB press briefing, so it's safe to say that I've read everything that's in the Apogee edition, even if not in the same set of covers.

Most of what's in the first part will go over most peoples' heads. The second part "Part II" has the gold. Part II shows exactly what political dynamics prevented the foam problem from being addressed, how well-intentioned culture and internal politics can break down. I've worked for many companies, and what I saw in Part II of the CAIB Report is by far the best, yet it still killed fourteen astronauts.

Anybody who runs his own business, is a supervisor at one, a director, manager, leader or aspiring leader in any capacity should read Part II of the Columbia Accident Investigation Report.

5 out of 5 stars This is better than the Government copy.......2003-12-22

I just got through this book. It's actually a very easy and interesting read, not the technical document you'd expect. There is a lot of history about the Shuttle program as well as some excellent photos I haven't seen before.
Where this book excels over the government copy (which is about twice the price of this one)is that it includes the interview immediately after the review was released with Mr. Sean O'Keefe, so you get to hear his opinions also. (Not included in the Govt issue)
Also as usual where Apogee excels is with the bonus CD Rom. It contains the full 700 page Return To Flight documents which NASA has prepared recently as well as some great video from the STS 107 mission itself. I really agree with their advertising now that Apogee IS THE Space Book Company.

Book Description

For millennia, policymakers, statesmen, and scholars have grappled with questions about the concept of victory in war. How long does it take to achieve victory and how do we know when victory is achieved? And, as highlighted by the wars against Afghanistan and Iraq, is it possible to win a war and yet lose the peace? The premise of this book is that we do not have a modern theory about victory and that, in order to answer these questions, we need one. This book explores historical definitions of victory, how victory has evolved, and how it has been implemented in war. It also subsequently develops the intellectual foundations of a modern pre-theory of victory, and discusses the military instruments necessary for victory in the twenty-first century using case studies that include U.S. military intervention in Panama, Libya, Persian Gulf War, Bosnia/Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT.......2007-04-04

A fresh, original, pioneering book that adds a new roadmap to thinking about military endeavers. Like any good philosophical work, there is an emphasis on precision in language. The Book begins with 9/11. President Bush declared victory in Iraq after several weeks of combat operations. Since we're still stuck there, what did he mean? In the introduction, the author addresses two major questions. "...there is no theory or precise language that permits policymakers, military officials and the public to agree on what 'victory' means or when 'victory' has been attained." Second: "...humans have been waging war for the past six thousand years without a framework for victory, and yet have successively waged wars. How can this be so? Is a theory of victory something distinct from a military strategy in war or a theory of war. What do we gain by developing one? How would such a theory fit into modern defense planning?" The author modestly describes this book as only the first step.
The next two chapters, beginning with Sun Tzu, provide a useful summary of the major military thinkers. They conclude with the problems arising from nuclear warfare. Remember the "nuclear winter" discussions of the late eighties. Victory would be meaningless. However, the War on Terror has restored the concept of victory to the language.
He spends the next two chapters exploring what could be meant by "victory" and the definition problems. They cover in detail the American concept of "victory" arising from our history. The next six chapters provide thoughts on selected American military actions post vietnam, beginning with the raid on Lobya. The next chapter discusses military power and the concept of victory. In the final analysis, successful occupation by ground forces is the ultimate seal. The contribution and limitations of navel and airpower are recognized.
The concluding chapter outlines possible avenues for future scholarship to build on what the author started. As readers might expect, the writing is dense and somewhat repetitive with a social science flavor. It should not deter anyone from tackling this book because of its importance.
In all my years of reading about military affairs and history, I've never encountered anything quite like the ideas in this volume. There's nothing comparable in my extensive personal military history library. His call for new thinking is a critical appeal since we've embarked on the heartrending struggle in Iraq. Without a clear idea of what we expected to achieve, there's no wonder we find ourselves in such straits. The real tragedy is that fine young people are dying there for an undefined purpose. This book could not be more timely. I urge everyone to read it.

Book Description

The author of Blowup goes back to the future to follow the evolution of space-age design: from its optimistic conception in the 1950s to its decline in the 1970s and its retro revival today.

The Soviet-American race to the moon ignited a worldwide obsession with outer space and futuristic living that was manifested in the era's architecture, design, and popular culture—and reflected in everything from furniture to postage stamps, fashion to children's toys. With hundreds of illustrations and a lively text, Sean Topham reveals the countless ways the galactic frontier invaded every aspect of daily life: in household objects and haute couture, advertising and comic books, plastics and interior design, private homes and public buildings. He explains how artists' conceptions of the future influenced history and were in turn shaped by events for decades to come. As Topham charts the rise and fall of futuristic design through the work of Eero Aarnio, Joe Colombo, Verner Panton, Pierre Cardin, Courrèges, Paco Rabanne, Archigram, Haus-Rucker-Co, Matti Suuronen, John Lautner, Adrian Frutiger, among many others, he reveals how the era's euphoric energy gave way to a more anxious uncertainty. He also questions whether today's passion for futuristic design is purely retro-chic—or the dawning of a new fascination with space-age culture. Entertaining and informative, this is a nostalgic look forward to a remarkably inventive era that seems sometimes innocent, sometimes prescient, but always inspiring.

3 out of 5 stars Unrealistic representation of futuristic design.......2007-04-22

This book was a bit of a disappointment, in that it takes a very simplistic view of the phrase "futuristic design." It begins with a brief explanation of the advent of the space age, from the history of the first satellites to a basic overview of human flight in space up through the Apollo program and the early establishment of the Soviet space station.
The focus then moves to the cultural response, in particular the areas of the arts and fashion. When the author uses the phrase "the rise and fall of futuristic design", the meaning is that so-called "futuristic design" is no longer being used in the arts. In many ways, this is incorrect, futuristic design is still being used in many daily products. The difference is that the klitsch element is largely gone. A great deal of it was minimally functional anyway. What has happened is that what was revolutionary is now commonplace.
Modern buildings now incorporate functionally futuristic design and humans now regularly wear permanent press clothing and nothing like the ridiculous items that are featured in this book. Other simple devices such as hearing aids, eyeglasses that automatically tint and cell phones that were once futuristic are now commonplace.
Therefore, the futuristic design that the author refers to is almost totally the absurd, mainly dysfunctional and even sometimes bizarre designs that somehow were placed under the "futuristic designs" umbrella. They were really nothing of the sort, and the world is better off that they have been dismissed.

    Book Description

Peter Swinnen, Johan Anrys, and Freek Persyn call themselves 51N4E, a name that refers to the geographic coordinates of their place of business, located in Brussels, Belgium. The somewhat immodest subtitle that underscores their cryptic collective moniker--Space Producers--has been justified by their transformations of dwelling spaces, their recent renovation of the Groeninge Museum in Bruges, and their most important commission to date, the conversion of an old brewery in Mechelen into a cultural center. One of the most talented and promising architecture bureaus in northern Europe, their collective has recently been awarded the prestigious Maaskant Prize for young architects, the most important prize in the Netherlands. Recent winners include Liesbeth van der Pol, Neutelings Rietdijk, and Adriaan Geuze--all Dutch, as you can see. 51N4E are the first non-Dutch winners ever. In recognition of this honor, 51N4E is being treated to a first monograph; Space Production will present a complete overview of the bureau's work, accompanied by essays about their distinctive design ideas.
