4 out of 5 stars Good book but I believe there are better.......2006-11-27

The good: This book is easy to read and understand, assumes very little of the reader other than a general understanding of current science. Explainations are clear and build logically throughout the book. Very little math - any high school math would be enough to understand what little there is in this book. Information is up to date and the book has many good pictures and diagrams to aid in understanding.

The not as good: I would have liked more in depth detail. I know this is somewhat subjective the book still has nearly 500 pages, however the text often only covers 60% of a page. In comparison to the at least two compeating books "Astronomy Today" and "The Universe" have over 700 pages each and more like 90% of a text page coverage just to grossly compare them. Each of these books also are easy to read, have good pictures and diagrams too.

So all in all this book is good and covers the subject well, but if you wish more detail other books may be better choices.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you want to know, plus a great CDRom!.......2003-04-07

This book is really good, especially for those interested in the universe and its formation. It also comes with a CDRom with video clips and a study guide for students. A useful, and interesting book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Textbook, easy to read and enjoyable to learn........2007-03-28

As stated in the title, bought this book for a college course and found it to be a good read and a pleasure to learn from. Lots of great color pictures other artwork.

3 out of 5 stars Too easy.......2006-08-16

This book is an excellent introductory to astronomy. However, it seems as if the authors are afraid of scaring away students with a few equations and math. They spend pages trying to describe an astrophysical situation when they could list an equation or a graph that would be more succinct and easier to comprehend.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Introductory Astronomy Book I've Every Read.......2006-04-20

The best astronomy book I've ever read. Even more than that, this is the best science book I've ever read. The writing style combined with the excellent illustrations make even fairly complex subject simple and understandable. Even their descriptions of things like relativity are so simple that anyone can understand them.

Now the book is in its fourth edition, bringing it up to date with:

the discovery of an object larger than Pluto in our own solar system
the latest results from the rovers and orbiters studying Mars
the latest Cassini results from Saturn and Huygens results from Titan
the Deep Impact mission to Comet Tempel 1
supernovae observations providing stronger evidence for dark energy
recent results from the Spitzer Space Telescope
Mastering Astronomy -- the book includes a one-year subscription to this web based interactive media that has been used by over 100,000 students.

Note that this book comes in several editions. This one covers everything. The other two are extracted from this book.

As an astronomy student at the University of Colorado, I have used "The Cosmic Perspective" as a text book for two of my classes (one on stars and galaxies, and one on the solar system). This book is perfect for both: the text is clear and full of insight; the illustrations and photographs are abundant and extremely professional, and they complement the text superbly; the sections called "Mathematical Insight" give the reader a clear understanding of the science involved, and the sections called "Common Misconceptions" are as fun to read as they are informative.

I have read this book cover-to-cover, and although it is intended as a text book, it reads like many of the very popular science books I have read. If you enjoyed reading Sagan's "Cosmos", Gribbin's "In Search of the Big Bang", Feynman's "The Character of Physical Law", Lederman's "The God Particle" or Hawking's "A Brief History of Time", you will enjoy this very well-conceived and well-written book.

"The Cosmic Perspective" is very comprehensive. Besides covering the fundamental concepts of astronomy (such as light as the cosmic messenger; universal motion; celestial timekeeping; and telescopes), this book details how stars are born, evolve and die; the fundamentals of relativity; how the galaxies were formed, as well as how our solar system was formed; how vast space really is; how we know the distances to various objects in our universe; and how we know what happened at the early moments of the Big Bang. Since this book is new (published in 1999), it contains the latest facts and the latest thinking of modern astronomy. This book captured my interest and my enthusiasm the moment I began reading it.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

I have been giving these to family who have lost loved ones. Everyone enjoys this smaller researched overview of Heaven! Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet.......2007-08-01

Some folks have complained about this book's lack of proofs and research. I frankly don't see that, unless one wishes not to be convinced. Alcorn gives plenty of scriptural back-up for his premises. If you want college text level documentation, you need to pick up his "Heaven" instead.

"Light" is great for someone who doesn't have the energy to attack a substantial work like "Heaven". I bought it for my mom, who is caring for my dad, who is suffering from senile dementia. She tried to read "Heaven", and what she did read was a blessing for her, but honestly, it just required too much work. She had neither the time nor the energy to get through it. After having read "Light", I would not hesitate to recommend it to any but the most meticulous and pedantic of scholars. It is certainly preferable to "Heaven" if you're buying it for someone who is suffering from an illness or situation that saps emotional and intellectual energy.

In addition to its simplicity, "Light" has the power of concise writiing on its side. Short works are often the most powerful, and this is true of "Light". I got more in-depth knowledge from "Heaven" (and I'm re-reading it), but "Light" will stay with me in a way that "Heaven" isn't going to do.

2 out of 5 stars Randy All Corn?.......2006-12-18

I am reminded that the Apostle Paul asked, who are we to judge another man's work? Ultimately, we have to place opinions at the feet of Jesus Christ and accept His judgment regarding what is truly valuable. With that in mind, I would still like to offer an opinion on this book.

Some of the strengths of this book are that it is short, very easy to read, generally encouraging and comforting, gives attention to Scripture, and has some thought-provoking images and questions, like a sermon, which engender self-reflection.

Despite this, I really don't like the book. The author touches on important ideas but moves on so quickly that the thoughts lack depth of attention. What angers me is that I get the impression he thinks the unfathomably deep, mysterious, and awesome concepts of heaven and eternity can just be so easily and quickly explained, snap-crackle-pop, in a trite little book which really seems written off the top of his head, and whipped off in a week!

Additionally, I have never before read a writer who so constantly quotes his own material! He uses the Bible to write fiction, and then uses that fiction to explain the Bible! He does the same with personal correspondence. The book reflects a lack of time spent doing any quality research, and largely fails to draw upon a vast array of rich sources to help explain the unspeakable. It gives the impression that he either has a very narrow view of the subject or an inordinately high view of his own work. I personally find his fiction shallow and trite, and yet there he is, quoting it like this is the best and deepest thing he can come up with? It's corny. I really think it reflects a serious blind spot in the author, and it's kind of a sin, that it's so shallow.

Randy Alcorn is also very opinionated, as in all his writings, especially when it comes to money. In this book, an example: "Want a heart for General Motors? Buy stock in it." (p.147) This is so narrow minded.

To me, it's sad that books like this are so popular. I really find that the best thing about this book is that it makes me long for a truly deep, thoughtful, well-researched, well-written biblical book about eternity and heaven - which this is not.

Book Description

Built from the ground up on our new understanding of the universe, this reader-friendly book focuses on central ideas and unifying themes to provide a cosmic context. Scientific concepts are linked to everyday experience to help readers develop an appreciation for the scientific method and to see how physics and astronomy are foundations for understanding their world, and recent discoveries spark readers' curiosity in the universe as a whole. The book opens with an overview of the evolving universe to give readers a big picture that is returned to throughout the book. Departing from the traditional planet-by-planet facts and figures, the book emphasizes the similarities between planets by exploring connecting processes, as well as the evolving vision of galaxies and dark matter. For college instructors and students, or anyone interested in astronomy and physics.

2 out of 5 stars Poor quality paper and binding.......2005-09-25

It is a sad day when you have to pay almost $100 for a paperback book with very thin paper. Of course as is now current practice to keep a student from getting decent resale on this item the publisher glue CD ROMs to the front of the book that once used will no longer have a valid code. The glue used to stick in the disks comes off so pages stick together.

The content of the book is fine. The quality of the binding, paper and packaging leaves a lot to be desired.

5 out of 5 stars Best Textbook Ever!.......2005-02-17

This is the best textbook I have ever read. Not only is it informative, but the authors give the information in an interesting way. My entire class agrees that the best line is "we like to refer to Jupiter not as a failed starm but as a very successful planet."

4 out of 5 stars A Quality Text Book.......2003-12-16

I'm not an astronomer. I'm not even a scientist. I'm just a 2nd year college student that just finished a semester of astronomy for her science requirement. None the less, after reading the majority of this book, I do feel that I'm in a position to be able to review it properly.
The beginning was a bit confusing for me, but once I read more, I began to understand the majority of the material presented. It's a very, very thorough text with excellent cd-rom resources that help you test yourself and review. I thought the chapters on the planets, particularly the jovian planets, and star formation were particularly well written and easy to understand. This is a great text for anyone wishing to teach or study astronomy. I would highly recommend it.

An insightful, comprehensive, and essential up-dating of the Ignatian call to discernment, especially in today's world. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Saint Ignatius of Loyola's exercises updated.......2007-03-21

This is a great book to be read by christians and not christians living in the actuarial world, full of stress, worries and deceives, which teach us how to turn back our eyes, heart and soul towards God, with him in our hearts and life, and facing the world with hope, following the steps dictated by Saint Ignatius of Loyola in his book of spiritual exercises.

5 out of 5 stars Ignatius for challenging the New World Order.......2007-02-02

Some months ago I met the author at a conference. Two months ago I read this book while on an Ignatian 30-day retreat. It was excellent spiritual reading and is exactly where I am at in my life now: trying to discern how I might be part of the struggle against the excesses of global injustice. Brackley takes the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius Loyola and helps us see how in the process of the Exercises we might move away from a me-directed spirituality [all too common in much spirituality] to a spirituality of solidarity and engagement. Its all very inspiring stuff...I am not normally one to enthuse over books of spirituality - all too often they vary from drippy piety mixed with no theology thru to sound ideas mixed with ponderous heavy-bottomed theology. Brackley is remarkable in that his theology is interesting, contemporary and combined in the right measure with his exposition of the Exercises and ideas for doing the Exercises. Excellent stuff! I wish the anti-globalization activists I know would read it - it would nourish their souls and inspire their activism!

A NEW LOOK AT THE EXERCISES, DESTINED TO BECOME A CLASSIC
The wisdom of St. Ignatius spoken of in the title is, of course, the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius and this book is Dean Brackley's interpretation of them. Jesuits have been writing this kind of book for centuries. Many are pious, run-of-the-mill productions. A few are exceptional; and I believe this is one of them. The "Foreword for Skeptics" alone is worth the price of the book. Ellen Calmus, a friend of Brackley and the copyeditor of the book, was not what you would call a believer and took the job with no real interest in religion. But the text chipped away at her unbelief, and one Christmas eve, when having nothing in particular to celebrate she was working on the copy, the light dawned and her life changed. A year later she was baptized by the author. This will probably not be the average reaction to the book, but it is worth reading. The author is a man of intelligence, learning and insight steeped in Ignatian spirituality and he speaks from a depth far beyond mere words with a new and fresh voice in a way that might be heard by the post-modern seeker. As Professor of Theology and Ethics at the University of Central America since 1990 and a successor of the Jesuits martyred there the previous year, he might be expected to stress the social justice dimension of the Exercises. And he does, but in so gentle a fashion that he opens up possibilities without imposing guilt trips on the reader. Brackley is faithful to the teaching of Ignatius, but offers even those familiar with the Exercises new insights and perspectives. The book will be particularly useful for those giving or making or studying the Spiritual Exercises.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening!.......2005-12-10

This is the first time I have studied the wisdom of Ignatius, and I am enthralled! Dean Brackley does a fabluous job of relating these wise thoughts to today's world. He educates, challenges, and inspires his readers. I reccommend this book to everyone.

    Book Description

The articles here are not only about time, they are investigations from a specific temporal perspective: the calendrical event of the millennium. This arbitrary marker has provided a challenge and focus to the International Society for the Study of Time and to thinkers in all disciplines to take stock of what has gone before and what lies ahead, approaching the event of the millennium from the standpoint of time itself, and asking critical questions about the nature and experience of time. Divided into six areas, including literature and language, music, psychology, sociology, history, and marking time, the collection is specific in content and broad in implication. Each article makes a contribution to scholarship within an individual discipline, and yet each transcends the bounds of discipline in its approach to broader issues involving the study of time. There is no other source like The Study of Time series that focuses so intensely on the nature and experience of time from diverse perspectives in all academic disciplines. This volume reveals the range and magnitude of intellectual endeavor in interdisciplinary research inspired by the enduring human fascination with time.

      Book Description

The Tiwanaku state was the political and cultural center of ancient Andean civilization for almost 700 years. Identity and Power is the result of ten years of research that has revealed significant new data. Janusek explores the origins, development, and collapse of this ancient state through the lenses of social identities--gender, ethnicity, occupation, for example--and power relations. He combines recent developments in social theory with the archaeological record to create a fascinating and theoretically informed exploration of the history of this important civilization.
