Customer Reviews:
Upper-class not casual.......2006-07-15
In general this is an informative book of ideas IF you are planning on a very hi-tech / upper-class / expensive restaurant. Definately not for the small business entrepreneur wishing to gather ideas for a small intimate casual gathering place.
Stunning architecture & interior designs.......2005-11-13
This book is quite useful if you work in architecture/interior design or wanted to opened a restaurant. It brings you lots and lots of other cafe & restaurants architectural & interior designs which is absolutely stunning. Each photograph is amazing and makes you really wanted to visit those restaurant/cafe.
I actually hoping for more details from each cafe & restaurants in this book, because for each cafe/restaurants review they only provide about 3-5 images. It also provide a small information about each cafe & restaurants, and sometimes a small blueprint of the building's architecture.
Overall, it's a great book with not much information in it. Because just like what the title is, it contains 'cafe & reataurant design' ONLY.
Impressive survey of the best and most innovative settings.......2005-06-12
The latest edition to the outstanding Te Neues "Designpocket" series, Cafe & Restaurant Design is a compact, 399-page, superbly illustrated compendium of cafe and restaurant interior designs and layouts throughout Europe, America, and around the world. From Cafe Gioriette in Vienna, to the Plaza Athenee in Paris, to the Cocoon Club in Frankfurt, to La Frustra in Rome, to the Lupino Lounge Restaurant in Barcelona, to the Berns Hotel in Stockholm, to Ini Ani Coffee Shop in New York, to Icebergs Dining Room & Bar in Sydney, to Moph in Tokyo, to La Scala in Bangkok, this series of pictorials is an impressive survey of the best and most innovative settings in which people gather to dine and socialize. Cafe & Restaurant Design is a particularly welcome and highly recommended addition to professional and academic Interior Design reference collections.
I was going to give 1 star until I realized..........2004-06-30
...that the error was mine. I ordered this along with a whole host of other books on the restaurant business. I didn't realize that it was a book of pictures. I thought it was that and some kind of description about what we were looking at. It's not. Only pictures.
I dropped it to 3 stars though because (while certainly interesting cases) most every business featured is an ultra-modern style. That, plus there are absolutely no case-by-case descriptions of what it is the authors found attractive or important about the designs.

good idea book.......2004-06-06
This book has lots of great pictures of various cafes and restaurants, hence the title. I bought it for ideas for my work and I loved flipping through the book when my brain needs some new ideas. If you are looking for how the architects came up w/ the solution or what kind of materials they use, you may not want this book. If all you are looking for is pictures, this is the book for you.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book, worth the purchase........2006-08-27
This is fantastic book for those of us who weren't around to experience the cafe racers of the 60's and 70's. It's like a time capsle sending you back to the lifestyle and genre of the ton-up boys and what it meant to earn that label.
Book was just as described from seller, perfect and unused condition.

Customer Reviews:
Not a very useful book........2004-06-30
I own a pretty sucessful bar in Santa Barbara California and decided last year to give the restaurant biz a shot. I know I know, but I was drunk.
Anyway, before I could back out, the lease was signed, big pieces were moving...I was pretty freaked.
I decided to learn all I could about the biz. From Management, to Design I ordered a blizzard of books on those and other subjects.
In the design genre I was very disappointed with this book. I (like some other reviewers here) found the interiors to look dated and generally "uncool". That is very much a matter of opinion, but really, the best teacher for me in design was to simply cruise around and put my head in a bunch of restaurants.
I good book (just outside the design genre) that takes design into consideration (more from a functional standpoint) is a book called "Restaurants That Work: Case Studies of the Best in the Industry". I recommend that one highly.
Good luck.

A VERY GOOD COLLECTION OF NEW IDEAS.......2003-10-09
A usefull tool for all the people that are somehow involved in the restaurant bussiness.Lots of cool places around the world showing a huge amount of solutions and perpectives.
mediocre at best.......2002-02-06
I would not recommend this book to anyone who is seriously looking into the finer points of restaurant design. Many of the chosen establishments have a very dated look to them, the photography is not up to par (so its not even good enough for the coffee table) and overall this book is a big snore. I am disappointed enough to return it, which I will be doing today. Definitely not worth the price. For a better read, try Restaurants That Work, by Martin E. Dorf.
Inspiration Abounds.......2001-08-14
I truly enjoyed the pictorial nature of this book. The descriptive text is also written in a visual style. I would have liked to read more about the concept inspirations and possibly some costs and expense of the designs. i have visited some of these wonderful spaces and would also liked to have addresses to visit more "Bars, Pubs and Cafes" during my travels.
An Architect's Perspective..........2000-07-13
As an architect who has considerable experience with designing Bars, Hotels, & similar hospitality spaces, I applaud Julie Taylor's overall creative vision. This publication's attention to detail, descriptive project narratives, and beautiful photography will satisfy the most critical designer; at the same time acting as a wonderful conversation piece for any casual reader. It's simply a beautiful book to look at! I reccommend this book as a great resource to architects & designers looking for inspiration; as well as anyone who appreciates interesting spaces, as opposed to the same old drabby places Americans have become accustomed to!

Book Description
It's where today's "quiet action" is-convivial coffee shops and laid-back cafs, much preferred to noisy bars and discos, especially then the settings are designed with as much panache as the ones that fill these inviting pages.
Ninety-eight projects, some with floor plans, showcase both chic, contemporary looks and newly "old" traditional looks in coffee houses, up-scale food shops, and fun, theme-oriented cafs, with such evocative names as Second Cup, The Mill, Coffee Klatch, and Sacred Grounds. International in scope, examples are included from Latin America, Europe, the Pacific Rim, the United States, and Canada

Didn't meet expectations.......2002-08-03
Sure some of the pictures were nice, and some of the designs were inspiring. But a few of the pictures were fuzzy, and some of the featured locales just didn't seem to fit with the title. For instance a sports bar? or bar/kiosk at a stadium? And heck, some of the cafe's were nearly ugly. I guess I was just expecting more...
A bible for restauranteurs.......2000-12-21
Not a day goes by that I don't look at this book on my bookshelf and get inspired on the next design of one of our restaurants. Great photography, great resource directory. A must if you own or or going to be in the business.
Book Description
A careful selection of projects of bars and cafes in Paris, New York, Buenos Aires, Madrid, etc, which embody the idea of the new coffeehouses. Photos specially taken for the edition, with plans and other graphical elements that facilitate its reading. From the same collection: The best of Bars and restaurants, The best of lofts, the best of American houses.
Customer Reviews:
An enticing armchair tour.......2003-10-16
Readers whose idea of a French café is (like mine was) little more than the cliché of black coffee and Le Monde at little round sidewalk tables will be very pleasantly surprised by variety revealed in this neat little book by Marie-France Boyer and photographer Eric Morin. From Paris haunts much like the stereotype, to rustic village cafes far outside the metropolis, to the retreats of artists or tradesmen, author and photographer demonstrate that the café is more than a place, but rather an intimate expression of the French lifestyle.
The beautiful photos are by far the most engrossing part of this book. But the writing is valuable too, describing the golden age of French cafes, the rise of important establishments like Momus, Les Deux Garçons in Aix-en-Provence, or the Marly, and the influence of the cafes on French art and culture. And though the book's almost a decade old now, the Guide at the end should still be useful in tracking down many of the cafes featured in photo and text.
In all, whether you're an experienced boulevardier, a traveler with fond memories, or just someone looking to experience French culture vicariously, "The French Café" should inspire many happy thoughts.
You should buy one of these cafés........2000-05-12
You can plan a trip accross France with this book as your only guide. Walking from "bistro" to café from Nice to Paris, Loire-valley to Nantes and Mont-Saint-Michel. Most of the places mentioned here are typically french. No stranger ever thought of pushing the doors. Eric Morin, photographer, knows well this subject. He lives in the Bastille district of Paris. He knows well the most hidden and most fashionable places. Because he spent some happy week-ends in Château du Verger in Anjou (close to Nantes), he collected great pictures from La Cigale and Trentemoult fishing harbour of Nantes. Did you ever dream of becoming a café tender in rural France? would you like to become the "manager" of a warm café where french workers will start the day drinking a Muscadet at 7 am? Marie-France Boyer, as usual, gives practical advices together with inspiring pictures. She will tell you how and where to buy cafés in France, what are "listed historic monuments" in France (some cafés are). A lot of cafés names and addresses are given at the end of this joyful and useful guide to real France. If you really love cafés, you should also buy "The cafés of Paris" asin:1566562783 and "Literary cafés of Paris".

Book Description
The design of bars and cafes has played an important role in the development of architecture in the twentieth century. This influence has been felt particularly strongly over the last 30 years, in a time when these social spaces have contributed significantly to the rediscovery and reinvention of cities across Europe and North America.
This volume presents and examines this significant urban architectural production, and discusses it against a background of the design of cafes and restaurants across the 19th and 20th centuries. Major themes and developments are discussed and illustrated with case studies, from the functionalist pre-World War Two architects in Central Europe representing modern society through the design of public spaces, right up to the design of sophisticated bars and restaurants as part of the recent urban renaissance of Barcelona and Paris in 1980s and London in the 90s.
