5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Professionals.......2007-08-13

I bought this manual to help me ugrade from Maya 7.0 to Maya 8.5 and it's become my most prized and relied upon resource. Every tutorial I've gone through has worked perfectly (no missing steps or errors so far), Mr. Lanier writes coherently & well, and each new topic is presented in a straightforward and matter-of-fact fashion.

As a professional Video Game Artist, I've reccommended this manual to our enitire company of 300, and will continue to do so to everyone else. In the past, decent documentation on the finer points of Maya has been elusive, but Mr. Lanier has saved us! I will be adding his other manuals to my library.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-03-09

This Book is just Perfect...it tells you EVERYTHING about the Lighting and the Texturing.... if you want to learn about that 2 things... Buy This Book NOW

5 out of 5 stars A Maya book absolutely worth owning.......2007-03-08

Lee Lanier has approached the writing of his latest book with the same intensity, accuracy, and zeal that he demonstrated when he was my teacher at De Anza College several years ago. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of Maya, and of Maya lighting in particular. The material is laid out methodically and in great detail. Lee never glosses over a topic, but goes in depth to provide insight into the theory behind every concept. I highly recommend this fine book.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource, lots of good information.......2007-01-04

I've read a number of Maya books over the past few years. Most focus on basic-intermediate usage. Lanier's book is a great resource for learning advanced tips and theory, with many color pictures. This is the best book I've found about using Hypershade nodes to build professional materials.

I particularly liked that the included DVD contains Maya project files for every scenario pictured in the book (although most of the cool models are not included, just simple geometric primitives). These project files contain great setups comparing different lighting and rendering settings. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning intermediate-advanced Maya topics.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent !.......2006-11-18

I've been reviewing several books on this topic, and this one's a winner! It's specific and useful and goes into great detail about nodes in Hypershade and how to use them that the manuals don't.

If you're serious about reaching an advanced level with your Maya rendering skills, then this book is for you. Just buy it now, and you can thank me later! In terms of lighting design and the esthetic side of things, I also like the book Digital Lighting and Rendering, 2nd Edition by the Pixar artist Jeremy Birn, I think the idea to buy both of these together is an unbeatable combination for any serious Maya user!

2 out of 5 stars More of a reference book.......2007-08-23

I was a bit disappointed by this book. It is written more like a reference book than something you can read through to learn the material. It is full of various equations with little in the way of "plain english" explanations. If you are VERY comfortable with vector math and looking at lots of equations, then this book may be a good reference. If you are looking for understanding basic concepts, then you will need to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Extra-ordinary book on Computer Vision!.......2006-04-29

I didn't know or hear about this book till one fine morning when I went to our IIT library looking for some good book on computer vision to supplement the knowledge imparted by Horn's book. I found this book and it contained most of the concepts covered thus far in my lectures. Still I was not convinced about the credibility of this book. Somehow, I started grazing through this book in leisure hours.

To my surprise, I found that it was simply an amazing book written so skillfully on computer vision from the basics. The Math fundae in the appendix were the ones I read first. They were very concise and helped me to grasp the concepts quickly. The chapters were also based on recent literature and very much coherent and self-explanatory.

This book has the potential to become a master-piece in computer vision. One unique feature of this book is the clear explanation of Math concepts in each chapter. For it to become more user-friendly, some real application oriented problems should be added.

But, on the whole, this book is an excellent book to be read along with Horn's book to fully understand the basics of computer vision. I strongly recommend this book to any novice to computer vision with little understanding of image processing concepts.

4 out of 5 stars Some nice intuitions.......2005-12-23

In my humble opinion, mathematics is best explained through intuitions which motivate the rigor. That is, a general, high level, overall understanding of a particular problem and the "theory" behind a solution must be presented before a rigorious algebraic analysis. The particular mathematics should then read like a novel. In this sense, Trucco and Verri succeed, at various parts throughout the text, but certainly fail at others. I would say 4/5th's of the text is well written, and hence the 4 star review.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intermediate textbook on Computer Vision.......2005-09-17

If you already understand image processing and the basics of computer vision, this book is a very good at concisely presenting more advanced algorithms to the reader. Also, because this book is so well organized, you can read it from beginning to end. Rest assured if you are looking at an algorithm on page 84, you will not need to skip ahead to later sections in the book to understand it. From the beginning, algorithms are named and presented in numbered steps for clarity of presentation. The book starts out with introductory material such as basic optics and the geometry of camera models. It continues with image denoising, as well as two full chapters devoted to image features and their detection. Finally, the more basic material concludes with a chapter on the mathematics of camera calibration. One aspect of vision that is often neglected in other computer vision books that is treated well here is that of motion. For those working in video processing, this might make this book a good selection. Also, the book gives one of the best discussions of eigenspaces that I have seen in print in chapter ten of the book, where the subject is recognition of 3D objects. I was able to code up the eigenfaces face recognition algorithm based almost entirely on the information found in chapter ten of this book. If you need an introduction to computer vision before tackling the more advanced material in this text, try Shapiro's book "Computer Vision" ISBN 0130307963. A good knowledge of linear algebra is necessary prior to understanding the algorithms in this book such as is found in Schaum's outline of Matrix Operations. Given the specific subject matter of this book, it would probably be an excellent choice for an engineer or scientist that is interested in computer vision as it relates to robotics.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner.......2005-03-22

Book uses a very analytical approach. Concepts are very poorly explained and derviations are not explained. As a text this book is well suited as a review for graduate level students. Using the word introductory in the title is very misleading. Do not recommend this book to those looking for an introduction to the world of computer vision.

If you are new to Blender and 3d animation, this book will help you to "open your mind to the possibilities". You will learn to build and animate your own character step by step. Easy to follow and very well explained. The included DVD has a lot of animation samples and source files used in the book. Go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Blender Intro and Character Design.......2007-08-17

Of all the books I've read on 3D, this is the first that actually has been useful and direct to me. I have been using Blender 3D for a year now, but I found that there was alot of cool features that I missed that I then learned from this book.

Besides a great introduction, this book flows smoothly with the creation of a face from only a reference photo (with all the intermediate steps to get there), and then the rest of the book is showing how to build a a fully rigged (ready for animation) character from scratch. I am so amazed with this book.

This is a definitely a worthwhile book. I teach Blender 3D for a organization at Texas A&M University, and I suggest this to them all.

5 out of 5 stars Animation Motivated Novices .......2007-08-13

Great book for the Blender Project. The intro says it all, for Blender Pros and highly motivated novices. Great tutorial and all the pieces included on CD.

5 out of 5 stars excellent deal.......2007-06-13

This product arrived around a month from the day the purchase was made. the product arrived in excellent conditions, And I also found it{s cheaper than in other websites.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed........2007-06-01

I've been learning Blender for a while now, piecing it together from stray tutorials and such, but with this very affordable book, I've found exactly what I needed. I already knew a lot of what the book covers, but it helped fill in some gaps that most online tutorials take for granted, and gave me a whole, more complete view of how to go about my business with Blender. I would definately buy another book from this author.

This is for you all, probably every one knows what is shadow but i bet no one know how many ways there are to make it. I need it expecially for shadows problems on 3D graphics, it gave me a special cool knowledge about colors that no one more than the author can give you !

5 out of 5 stars Move a step beyond the rest.......2007-07-18

If you're a hobby 3D graphhics artist or thinking of entering into the world of computer graphics, then this book is an essential resource to give you that realism factor often missing in artists works seen today.

The Book is superbly presented in glossy paper format with excellently reproduced colour images, that generously fill the book as examples on how to achieve the right lighting for that perfect shot you were trying to setup, but till now had no idea of how to achieve it.

This volume is a how to for novice and advanced artist alike, brilliantly guiding you through the ins and outs of rendering the most perfectly realisticly shaded 3D image possible.

The first edition had chapters guide you through Lighting workflow, three point lighting, Shadows (a must),Qualities of light, Colour, Exposure, Composition and staging (worth the price of the book alone), Materials and rendering algorithms(tips to turn a good work into a masterpiece)and Compositing(the absolute icing on the cake).

This vastly expanded 2nd edition has even more must know techniques and inside tips to push your work to professional levels, extra chapters include comprehensive guides on how to: *Apply advanced rendering techniques using subsurface scattering, global illumination, caustics, occlusion, and high dynamic range images
* Design realistic materials and paint detailed texture maps
* Mimic real-life camera properties such as f-stops, exposure times, depth-of-field, and natural color temperatures for photorealistic renderings
* Render in multiple passes for greater efficiency and creative control
* Understand production pipelines at visual effects and animation studios
*Develop your lighting reel to get a job in the industry

There is a Lot one can learn from this brillianlty updated and expanded 2nd edition and dare I say that it has to be if not the best then one of the very best presentations on this topic I've ever had the good fortune to study from.

If you own the first edition, then you just have to get this new 2nd edition as its like owning a completely new volume.

5 out of 5 stars nice!!!.......2007-04-18

very nice book easy to learn and very usefull for render and light, this book is a bible of cg lighting!!!

5 out of 5 stars learn concepts not technicalities.......2007-04-16

this book is amazing if you need to learn about lights - not how to use them specifically with a software package!
jeremy does touch on specifics that stand out in the different 3d applications, however it is more a "what to do with lights in order to achieve certain effects" rather than how to do it in maya, max, lightwave,...
it's very easy to understand, and anyone involved with 3d graphics should read this, even if you don't plan on specializing in lighting or rendering!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-04-03

My only wish is that I had read this 5 years ago when I first started in 3D graphics. Great book for anyone who is interested in bringing their artwork to the next level.

This is one of the best effects books I've purchased. It's not intended for people that just start out with effects, it's meant for people that want to learn to do actually work. I like the realworld format of the book, with projects that are similar to what you would get in actual production. Great Book!

Looking forward to Eric Keller's next book.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting read.......2007-05-30

Its not as boring as other manuals, and it explains how to accomplish things, while bringing the ideas of how to use them in better situations. I really enjoy the reality of client speak that is presented in it.

This is an excellent book for advanced maya users, teaches some great tricks with latices and light effects.

5 out of 5 stars Has some nice little Gems!.......2007-04-06

If you are interested in taking your existing knowledge of Maya to the next level then Eric's book is a great place to start. The book is laid out logically and easy to follow. The step-by-step examples have plenty of color images makeing it easy to understand. Eric has touched on very broad areas from texturing to rigging some complex setups. There are plenty of Mel and expression examples that add some more complexity with nice results. Many of examples Eric shows can be used for an array of other projects that you may encounter later on.

4 out of 5 stars Un buen libro para comenzar con mental ray.......2007-06-08

1 out of 5 stars Be careful not working for earlier revisions,,just for 3ds Max 9.......2007-05-23

I have just received the book and start to read and really liked it. And then the big disappointment came: the exercises do not start up. I have 3ds Max 7 and tried to figure out what the problem could be, why the dll's are not found. After some time I have started to search on the internet what the problem could be? And I have found the the review placed here by somebody unfortunatelly just on the 20th of May 2007.I have received the book already by that time:-(.I can not tell you how disappointed I was/am. The book seemed so good, at least the intro, but I felt cheated by the author not stating in the title that works just with 3dsmax revision 9 and not stated on the CD either ,so opening the CD I lost the chance to send back the whole stuff. I was so angry on the author. Did he do it deliberately just to sell more books? Why he couldn't do the excercises in an earlier revision? Also I was annoyed because he thanked for everybody for creating this book but forget to give an e-mail where he could be reached. I tried to go to the WEBpage stated in the book the masteringmentalray, but I have to be registered to send him a mail. And guess what? None of the free e-mail provider addresses (hotmail, freemail etc) are accepted. This is the first site that I found like this.
So the author is well hidden.
I give one start to this book just because I felt cheated by not stating the revision of the SW in the title and this mislead me. Yeah I can download the max9 trial and then feel stressed that I have just one month to go through everything. I might do it one day but now I am too angry to just open the book once again.
Also be careful the Relaistic Architectural Visualization with 3DS max and mental Ray has the same "childsickness" files work just with 3DS max 9 -I have found now the reviews on that book also. The author is not the same but the publisher is.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for learning mental ray for 3ds max9.......2007-05-21

Well, when I first seen the advertisement for the this book. I was looking for something to better understand mental ray renderer and its materials and shaders. Joep The author does a good job of breaking things down to get a better understanding of mental ray rendering and its shaders and materials.

one thing I would caution is that this book and the files on the cd that come with it are for 3ds max 9 . I didn't see this anywhere in the book itself or on this page describing the book contents. but I was able to download the trial version of 3ds max 9 and use it (30 days). the book also talks about arch and design material which are great and render a lot faster than the mental ray material and shaders. and need little or no tweeking at all.
if you are looking for a book to help you write script for materials or shaders for mental ray this is not the book for you. with the new arch and design you do not need to.

If it wasn't for a file for a tutorial that was missing that I was able to get from the author himself through e-mail and a couple other areas that seen to be missing a step in a tutorial. I would probably give this a 5 star rating because I learn a great deal from this book and the author was very helpful in explaining somethings in the book that I didn't fully understand in certain section of the book (through e-mail). what the heck, I am going to give it 5 stars. HA!

though I do believe the second print will be even better.

New Riders' [digital] series is performing a tremendous service to the computer animation and graphics community. The newest addition to this family is [digital] Lighting & Rendering. Author Jeremy Birn has long been regarded as a talented computer graphics artist and generous writer, and he's been sharing his techniques and discoveries for years.

Using computer graphic and 3-D tools to create accurate images is easy; using them to produce beautiful, inviting, memorable images requires more than technical skill. [digital] Lighting & Rendering introduces reasons and techniques for using light, shadow, texture, and composition. The book is not software-specific, but demonstrates techniques that are applicable to almost any 3-D graphics application. It is assumed, however, that your 3-D software of choice supports such basic rendering features as soft shadows, light maps, colored gels, depth-of-field blur, motion blur, and so on.

The first half of the book discusses lighting and shadow: lighting workflow; light types; using lighting rigs, such as three-point lighting; shadows and shadow type; and light quality. Lighting--how it's used, where it's placed, the kind of shadow it casts, its intensity--is critical to any image, whether you're creating a photorealistic computer re-creation or a surreal fantasy picture. [digital] Lighting & Rendering explains not just how to use various lighting techniques, but why.

An outstanding chapter on color and its use through composition and lighting offers insight into how colors are perceived and how color affects a scene. The importance of color, hue, and saturation should not be underestimated, and the examples in this chapter, like in every other, drive home that point.

Additional chapters cover exposure, composition and staging, materials and textures, and compositing. There is no accompanying CD-ROM, but the platform-generic nature of the book (and of the subject matter itself) makes it unnecessary. The book is designed to educate and inform; it is up to readers to apply what they learn to their own projects.

Although fewer than 300 pages long, [digital] Lighting & Rendering is an informative and important book, useful to any computer graphics artist. Each page is filled with fascinating, immediately helpful information about the craft. The publisher spared no expense on the book's production, either--every page is in color, with at least one color photo per page illuminating the text. Mr. Birn's experience and insight are not to be underestimated, and this book is not to be missed. --Mike Caputo

5 out of 5 stars Get the 2nd edition, not this!.......2006-04-20

This 1st edition came out in 2000 and now there's a new 2nd edition coming out this year ~ I ordered the up~to~date one instead!

4 out of 5 stars Ray.......2006-03-22

Mr Birn makes great effort to illuminate the subtle and unappreciated aspects of creating visually aesthetic lighting and rendering. He helps pin down the elusive "why" factor, as opposed to bombarding the reader with a lot of technical information.

5 out of 5 stars Best book available.......2006-02-09

This book goes way beyond what you need to know, in a good way. I have read and re-read this book numerous times, learning new things with each read. It is like taking 2 courses in lighting and 2 in color. Extremely professionally written from a practicing professional (Pixar Studios). Classic.

5 out of 5 stars My review.......2005-09-18

A delightful book to have if you need to know about lighting and rendering.

5 out of 5 stars Testo dettagliato fatto molto bene.......2005-08-26

Consigliato

5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2007-03-19

This book is full of useful tips and tricks which are presented in a clear and concise manner. The Photo-reference for every item is unequalled by any other Maya book I own. It's a new standard showing how important it is that full color graphics accompany the text for a subject based on graphics production.

I think that Kirk guy is way more handsome than Chandler... But they both add some very useful knowledge to an already knowledgably written subject.

5 out of 5 stars Another "Must Have" Reference for Maya users........2007-03-14

Lee does it again with this reference for all us Maya users of various skill levels. He gives practical tips based on experience in everyday film production! It covers an entire production pipeline using Maya. He even covers Mel scripting in an elementary way, but with advanced functionality! If you are getting into Maya, and want to learn some professional short cuts, or if you've been using Maya every day and want to pick up some new tricks.. This is a resource I can't recommend enough as a Maya user myself.

5 out of 5 stars A unique Maya book.......2007-03-09

A great book to have around for all skill levels. Autodesk Maya is such a deep program, that you find yourself stumbling upon new approaches and techniques each time you use it. This book is a great source to give you a deeper sense of it's functionality. It's packed with years of experience and innovative ideas that can come to life in Maya.

5 out of 5 stars James Chandler.......2007-03-05

Lee really has this book thing down. I love his second book. And wow is that James Chandler handsom.

5 out of 5 stars truly the master.......2007-03-02

Lee Lanier is definitely a Maya wizard. His tips and techniques go across so many components of this powerful software that it's easy to see why they wanted him to write this, his second book. This book is perfect for those who have some Maya background, and I'm sure you will find it to be exactly what your library needs.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-03-08

I found this book a good overviewer for people who want to practically work in the area of hyper real characters. Its truely is a good reference and practical guide. Although it isnt for beginners, it gives overview of hyper-real character workflow in maya.

5 out of 5 stars great guide for the competent user.......2006-11-19

This is among my favorites of Maya reference books. Admittedly, I was not at an appropriate level of knowledge when I first bought it; however, once my understanding was sufficient, I was incredibly pleased with it. I this book is NOT for absolute beginners. It does not hold your hand and tell you how to do every little thing; if this is what your looking for, I would recommend a more basic intro level book. In terms of techniques, it fills in many of the gaps left by other Alias publications, and is certainly a far cry above Autodesk's lackluster publications.

This book is written presupposing some knowledge of the program and surrounding concepts. When I first began teaching myself Maya, a friend had shown me this book-at the time, I was utterly lost trying to follow it. However, within a month or two my knowledge was sufficient for this book to begin making sense to me.

If you have never used maya and are trying to learn, hold off for a while before buying this. If you are an intermediate level user (confident + comfortable with basic concepts, and a general understanding of most major areas) interested in learning more about professional modeling and rigging techniques, this is for you. A great aspect of this book is the fact that the DVD provides scene files in different stages of tutorial completion, which allows the user to check their work against a "solution," or examine concepts and workflow in greater detail.

This book is extremely helpful for anyone seeking insight into the professional CG world and the workflows and processes thereof.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book for ADVANCED users!.......2006-11-13

This an amazing reference for advanced digital sculptors, but it just covers far too much inside information and techniques from the edge to really go into step by step detail. The sticky lips techniques are priceless and came at the right time for me. Again, if you don't have atleast 2 years experience using Maya hold on to this book until you do OR get one of the fundamentals books or delve into the numerous instructional DVDs that are available. Once you are very familiar with the Maya interface conventions and have atleast intermediate knowledge Poly modeling characters and character rigging this book will pay major dividends.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good!.......2006-08-05

I'm not new to maya, but I had some questions about easier UV mapping tool, and this book tells me the hint, contains other useful information that I need to know as a good modeler and animator!

1 out of 5 stars Why I did not learn anything from this book........2006-07-06

Some Maya books are unclear about the real "need to know" steps on creating a model and this is one of those books. It is well known that most really good books about Maya topics come with a DVD with video tutorials that help reinforce the book and further your knowledge. I am sorry to say that this book did not have much to offer in that area.

Unfortunately, I need to give this book a negative rating. The companion DVD was full of interviews that were pointless and about non related topics. Creativity and imagination was definitely not important, as the book did not pay attention to important details.
Directions at some points were to just copy and paste a part of the model and skipping steps. It's like the people who made this book did not want you to learn anything from it and just rushed though making it to get some quick cash.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely for Beginners.......2007-08-22

If your goal is to design a basic character and a simple environment, then this book is definitely for you. It covers all the basics and helps you to get familiar with where the tools are located.

However, if you are already familiar with MAYA, then you'd be better off just going online and finding some tutorials.

5 out of 5 stars perfect book to learn maya 7.......2007-04-07

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......2007-02-26

This book is straight forward, easy to read, and a joy to follow along on the screen to. I am quite impressed with the attention to detail on each of the steps in this book. "Foundation" will give anybody who hasnt used a 3d package before the nessacary skills and information needed to follow on and create their own models.

6 out of 5 stars for such a good book.

(real name is my mothers, i am the one actually working through the book)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent beginners book.......2007-01-17

I have gotten through several chapters of this book and am already finding it extremely helpful in learning this complex program. There are movie lessons on the CD to augment each chapter and they are very helpful in making the lesson material familiar. If the book continues to be as helpful as it has been so far I will be a very satisfied customer.
Perhaps I shouldn't be writing a review so soon, but I am excited that the program is becoming accessible to me.
