Book Review: Elements of Phtogrammetry.......2000-09-27
This book is clearly one of the best ones around in the area of photogrammetry. The chapters are properly organised and the concepts are explained clearly.
Of course, every book has to focus on its intent and target audience. The authors did this with flying colors. If there is anything missing in the current photogrammetric literature, it surely must be a book that reorganises the chapters into an operational book of case studies on photogrammetric practice.
I strongly recommend the book to you.

The science and engineering of remote sensing—theory and applications
The Second Edition of this authoritative book offers readers the essential science and engineering foundation needed to understand remote sensing and apply it in real-world situations. Thoroughly updated to reflect the tremendous technological leaps made since the publication of the first edition, this book covers the gamut of knowledge and skills needed to work in this dynamic field, including:
The authors have carefully structured and organized the book to introduce readers to the basics, and then move on to more advanced applications. Following an introduction, Chapter 2 sets forth the basic properties of electromagnetic waves and their interactions with matter. Chapters 3 through 7 cover the use of remote sensing in solid surface studies, including oceans. Each chapter covers one major part of the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g., visible/near infrared, thermal infrared, passive microwave, and active microwave).
Chapters 8 through 12 then cover remote sensing in the study of atmospheres and ionospheres. Each chapter first presents the basic interaction mechanism, followed by techniques to acquire, measure, and study the information, or waves, emanating from the medium under investigation. In most cases, a specific advanced sensor is used for illustration.
The book is generously illustrated with fifty percent new figures. Numerous illustrations are reproduced in a separate section of color plates. Examples of data acquired from spaceborne sensors are included throughout. Finally, a set of exercises, along with a solutions manual, is provided.
This book is based on an upper-level undergraduate and first-year graduate course taught by the authors at the California Institute of Technology. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the field and its applications, it is appropriate for students in electrical engineering, applied physics, geology, planetary science, astronomy, and aeronautics. It is also recommended for any engineer or scientist interested in working in this exciting field.

Image Analysis, Classification and Change Detection in Remote Sensing: With Algorithms for ENVI/IDL
Morton J. Canty Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0849372518 |
Book Description
With an ever-increasing availability of aerial and satellite Earth observation data, image analysis has become an essential part of remote sensing. Image Analysis, Classification and Change Detection in Remote Sensing: With Algorithms for ENVI/IDL combines theory, algorithms, and computer codes and conveys required proficiency in vector algebra and basic statistics. It covers such topics as basic Fourier transforms, wavelets, principle components, minimum noise fraction transformation, and othorectification. The text also discusses panchromatic sharpening, explores multivariate change detection, examines supervised and unsupervised land cover classification and hyperspectral analysis. With programming examples in IDL and applications that support ENVI, it offers many extensions, such as for data fusion, statistical change detection, clustering and supervised classification with neural networks, all available as downloadable source code. Focusing on pixel-oriented analysis of visual/infrared Earth observation satellite imagery, this book extends the ENVI interface in IDL in order to implement new methods and algorithms of arbitrary sophistication. All of the illustrations and applications in the text are programmed in RSI's ENVI/IDL. The software and source code is available for download at: http://www.crcpress.com/e products/downloads/default.asp. Ideal for undergraduate and graduate student, this book provides exercises and small programming projects at the end of each chapter. A solutions manual is also available.

Digital Photogrammetry: A Practical Course
Wilfried Linder Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 3540291520 |
Book Description
The second edition is an "all-in-one" combination of basic theory and practical exercises with software and data included on a CD-ROM. Potential readers/users are students of Photogrammetry, Geodesy, Geography and other sciences, but also all who are interested in this topic. No prior knowledge is necessary, except the handling of standard PCs. Theory is presented true to the motto "as little as possible, but as much as necessary".
The main part of the book contains several tutorials. In increasing complexity, accompanied by texts explaining further theory, the reader can proceed step by step through the particular working parts. All intermediate as well as the final results are discussed with reference to accuracy and error handling, and included on the CD-ROM to provide controls. Most of the standard work in Digital Photogrammetry is shown and trained for example scanning, image orientation, mono and stereo plotting, aerial triangulation measurement (manual and automatic), block adjustment, automatic creation of surface models via image matching, creation of ortho images and mosaics, and others. Not only standard situations are dealt with but also more complex ones, such as unknown camera data, extreme relief or areas with very low contrast. Examples of both aerial and close-range photogrammetry present the power of these type of measurement techniques.
The software is not limited to the example data included but may be used for personal projects. Part of the book comprises a complete description of the software. On the CD-ROM, versions in German, English and Spanish are available. Even 3-D images can be viewed with the accompanying 3-D glasses.

Close Range Photogrammetry: Principles, Techniques and Applications
Thomas Luhmann , Stuart Robson , Stephen Kyle , and Ian Harley Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0470106336 |
Book Description
An authoritative guide to close range photogrammetry. The first comprehensive modern text on this subject in English, expanded and updated from the German text by Luhmann. This book provides a thorough presentation of the methods, mathematics, systems and applications which comprise the subject of close range photogrammetry, which uses accurate imaging techniques to analyse the three-dimensional shape of a wide range of manufactured and natural objects.
Close range photogrammetry, for the most part entirely digital, has become an accepted, powerful and readily available technique for engineers and scientists who wish to utilise images to make accurate 3-D measurements of complex objects.
After an introduction, the book provides fundamental mathematics, including orientation, digital imaging processing and 3-D reconstruction methods, as well as presenting a discussion of imaging technology including targeting and illumination, hardware and software systems. Finally it gives a short overview of photogrammetric solutions for typical applications in engineering, manufacturing, medical science, architecture, archaeology and other fields.

ASIN: 0306474832 |
Book Description
Hyperspectral Imaging: Techniques for Spectral Detection and Classification is an outgrowth of the research conducted over the years in the Remote Sensing Signal and Image Processing Laboratory (RSSIPL) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. It explores applications of statistical signal processing to hyperspectral imaging and further develops non-literal (spectral) techniques for subpixel detection and mixed pixel classification. This text is the first of its kind on the topic and can be considered a recipe book offering various techniques for hyperspectral data exploitation. In particular, some known techniques, such as OSP (Orthogonal Subspace Projection) and CEM (Constrained Energy Minimization) that were previously developed in the RSSIPL, are discussed in great detail. This book is self-contained and can serve as a valuable and useful reference for researchers in academia and practitioners in government and industry.Customer Reviews:
