My husband had the original tapes and he can't stop raving about the sound quality on the DVDs. As far as the content, he is a huge SW fan and he loves the radio dramas almost as much as the movies.

My 7 year old (and of course mee too) loves all three of these. He'll actually sit still for hours and listen to them, and race to the CD player waiting for me to change discs. It was dissapointong to see these broadcasts get progressivly smaller with each movie. From 7 in the first, to 5 in the second, and the Return only three CD's long. The last is almost nothing but the movie, with very little additional material. It's still good, but after lstening to A New Hope, The Return of The Jedi feels very short. I would highly reccommend these. They're great for those cold or raining Saturday acfternoons.

Complete Star Wars Trilogy Radio Dramas, WONDERFUL SHOWS!!!.......2004-12-12

How did Luke come to know Biggs? How did Leia get the Death Star plans? What happened to her in her cell after Darth Vader came in with the interrogation droid? How did Luke become a Commander? These questions, which have been asked by many fans, are answered in the original radio dramatizations of the Star Wars Trilogy. Since some readers may be considering the purchase of one of the dramas or possibly the whole set, I will endeavor to give details of all the dramas. Please note that this is an in-depth review of all three dramas and is therefore somewhat more lengthy than many reviews you will encounter. If you would prefer a shorter review please feel free to scroll to the next review. I will start with the original Star Wars drama from 1981...

In 1981, the Star Wars radio drama was released. Many people were skeptical about the success of a completely sound-based Star Wars universe because Star Wars is a highly visual world that is based largely on visual special effects. They wondered how Star Wars could be experienced without the stunning special effects of the movies. Though the drama does lack visual effects, the sound effects from Ben Burtt and the wonderful score from John Williams provide a fabulous listening experience. Many of the characters from the movies have been replaced with substitutes. Mark Hamill takes on the role of Luke Skywalker and Anthony Daniels provides the voice of C-3PO. Although the substitutes take some getting used to, over all they make better representations of the characters than the movie actors do. Perry King provides a humorous Han Solo. Although his voice is gravelly, he seems to be the kind of guy who could be Han Solo. His wise mouth and humor enhance his image. Ann Sachs takes on the role of Princess Leia. Although she lacks the cold voice of Carrie Fisher, she displays more emotion. To illustrate my point, Carrie Fisher showed little audible horror when her planet and people were destroyed. Ann Sachs provides a more realistic outpouring of sorrow and grief as she screams and cries out as her planet is savagely blown into space dust. She also displays a great deal of emotion in the scene where Darth Vader is interrogating her in her cell. This scene was not in the movies. Though the scene is not for the squeamish, it does illustrate Vader's cruelty and utter lack of caring. His heartless mental attack and Leia's screams of anguish and pain serve to drive home the sheer evil of Darth Vader and the Empire. Brock Peters plays Darth Vader. Although he can not replace James Earl Jones, he has a deep booming voice that can turn from calm to anger in an instant. He also displays emotion more effectively than James Earl Jones. For example, in the freezing pit of Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back, he expresses glee, anger, pleading, and pain. It is obvious from his increasing tone, pitch and volume that he is becoming angry with Luke. Mark Hamill is irreplaceable as Luke Skywalker. He is the perfect Luke. No one can be Luke, not even a substitute. His cockiness at the beginning of the play when he races Fixer turns to fear and anger as he meets Ben and finds that the Imperial troupes have slaughtered his aunt and uncle. He eventually gives way to despair as Ben is killed, but he soon is filled with elation as he destroys TIE Fighters as the Millennium Falcon attempts to escape from the Death Star. He and he only could be Luke. Bernard Behrens plays Ben Kenobi. He does a wonderful job, especially in the scene where he and Vader fight. Anthony Daniels and Anthony Daniels only could play C-3PO. He does a stupendous job of enhancing the personality of C-3PO in this drama. We find out how he and R2-D2 met and how their relationship came into being. Anthony Daniels as C-3PO and the electronic R2-D2 have a deeper friendship than is apparent in the movies. Their quarrels are often humorous. The special effects in the drama are absolutely staggering. Many of the sounds from the movies, and many more not found in the movies have been included. Despite the early time of its release, the original drama is in full surround sound. Unlike in the movies, the characters are also in full stereo. In the movies, the characters occupy the center channel while sounds occupy the side channels. However, in the radio dramas the characters, music and sound all are stereo. You can hear them moving in different directions. In the movies, it is apparent what they are doing by looking at them. With radio there is no visual. Therefore, there must be some way of letting the audience know what is going on. Since there is no narration besides that found in the beginning and end, the characters must let the audience know what is happening. In many radio plays, this can be quite annoying. However, Brian Daley has cunningly written the script to make the descriptions realistic. Here is an example. "Han, Storm trooper to your left!" Blast! "Aaargh!" Storm trooper falls. "Got em!" Although the drama is not perfect, I would highly recommend it due to its staggeringly advanced nature. I would expect something of this magnitude and nature to have been made nowadays. I can hardly imagine how such a monumental task was under taken without most of the computer and digitalized technology of today. Over all, it is a stupendous performance. It spans thirteen episodes, each approximately a half hour for an overall running time of six and a half hours.

The Empire Strikes Back radio drama is another delight. The cast remains the same. Billy Dee Williams plays Lando just as he does in the movies. Paul Hecht plays the Emperor. He does a passable imitation of the emperor's voice, though it could be more sibilant. John Lithgow does a great job as Yoda. Although Frank Ozz is still the only true Yoda, John Lithgow's imitation is pretty good. This production features a huge number of sound effects not found in any of the movies. Those that are found in the movies have been used to their fullest extent. This drama, like the first, is also in full surround sound. The music, just like in the first, is absolutely stunning. Mark Hamill puts on another phenomenal performance of Luke Skywalker. When he is attacked, he screams in fright and pain. He coolly kills the wampa and escapes. He attempts to walk through a blizzard back to base. His performance there is wonderful as he strives to overcome hypothermia and the desire to lie down. He actually seems to be freezing and shaking with cold. His greatest achievement comes when he acts with Brock Peters in the scene on Cloud City. He meets Vader with cocky confidence. Vader overcomes him and eventually he lets out an agonized scream of pain as his hand is cut from his body. He seems to be in terrible pain as he learns that Vader is his father. He eventually falls onto a weather vane. His desperate cries for Ben and Leia are heart-wrenching. As always, the other members of the cast have made this play a distinct pleasure. There are a wide variety of new characters and actors. They all have done a wonderful job. Over all, I would highly recommend this dramatization as well, especially if it is combined with the first radio play. The show has ten episodes, each running for about a half hour for an overall running time of about five hours. It's a superb listening experience.

The period after the Empire Strikes Back radio drama was a dark time for Public Radio. Due to circumstances not related to the plays mentioned here, funding of Public Radio was greatly lowered. No more dramas were produced for many years. Finally funds were increased in the nineties. HighBridge Audio released the first two dramas on tape and CD in 1993. Their great success led to the decision to finally make Return of the Jedi. The production team for the original dramas was brought together again and the actors who had starred in the previous dramas were called back to play in this new drama. Unfortunately, Mark Hamill does not play Luke and Billy Dee Williams does not play Lando, but substitutes have replaced them. The new Luke is more serious, but he still serves as a passable Luke. The new Lando also makes a passable imitation of Billy Dee Williams. As always, the music and sound effects are stunning again and in full surround sound. The performances of the actors are wonderful. Paul Hecht again plays the emperor. His voice, though lacking in the sibilant hiss of Ian McDiarmid does have a distinctly evil quality. John Lithgo's performance as Yoda however was a bit of a disappointment. Although he is great in The Empire Strikes Back, he sounds a great deal more human in Return of the Jedi. His death scene is moving though. There is one major flaw in this radio drama. The first two plays had ten to thirteen episodes, which allowed for a great deal of character and story expansion. However, Return of the Jedi only has six. Some of the scenes, such as the destruction of the shield generator, the Rebel fleet's jump into hyperspace, the crash of the Super Star Destroyer Executor and the bulk of the battles had to be abridged. This drama, although not as fulfilling as the previous two, is still a wonderful addition to the trilogy. It has six episodes, each about a half hour long with a total running time of three hours. I would most certainly recommend it for people who like swift entertainment instead of the slow but thorough plodding of the first two plays.

To conclude, I think personally that all three of the above mentioned dramas are astounding. I would recommend purchasing them all. There is a boxed set with all three dramas available for sale. However, another option is the Limited Collector's edition, which features some extras, such as deleted scenes, promotional spots by many of the actors, music, interviews with the cast, and a section that features the Speeder Bike scene without music or sound so we can see how it sounds as it is performed by the actors in the studio. This set also features the "get well" card that was made for Brian Daley just after the last recording session of Return of the Jedi. Although this set is the most expensive, it is much more extensive and provides some interesting little tidbits not found in the regular editions. I would highly recommend any of these sets.

I am a huge audio book fan. I love almost every Star Wars audio put out to date.

This ranks as one of 3 out of hundreds of audiobooks I have listened to that I couldn't make it through.

The recasting of charecters is so bad as to severly distract from the story. The actors are of great caliber, but in these roles they just do not work.

If I pay $100 for something I want it to soar, not crash. Save you money and just listen to the audio from the movies.

Perhaps you think the Star Wars trilogy cannot be fully realized with audio alone. You think you'd miss the stunning visuals, the emotions of the actors, and the special effects. You think it would be a disappointment. As Yoda might say, "So impossible is it? So certain are you?" This is a review of The Empire Stikes Back: The Radio Drama. Amazon seems to have reviews of the radio show mixed up with reviews of Empire Stikes Back books. Anyway... The success of the radio adaptation of the first Star Wars movie led to this radio drama based on the second Star Wars movie. It was presented as ten half-hour episodes. This being about two and a half times as long as the movie, additional scenes were added. The only actors from the movie to reprise their roles on radio were Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO and Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian. This is a fun program that Star Wars fans will enjoy.

The book is pretty good. I was a lttle disappointed with the scenes pictured in the book. They were dark and I believe there were better scenes to pictorially represent the movie.

Classic Film, Good Book.......2007-08-08

We all know the story that unfolds in The Empire Strikes Back, and many people consider it to be the best of the films. So what does an author do to make the story seem fresh to the reader? Add details? Change the story? Closely follow the film? In the case of this book, Mr. Glut has elected to follow the film. I think he made the right decision, and he describes the action very well. I was not distracted by being familiar with the story, and I think that the unique individual who has not seen the film would obtain a good grasp of the tale by reading this book. Just as in the film, it was great fun to follow our heroes from Hoth to Bespin and Dagobah. One can only wonder what happens next.

One of the best films ever made, but the book doesn't add much..........2007-05-26

Ranking movies, music, and other artistic endeavors is generally something I grew out of in high school, but if pressed to list my "Top Ten" favorite films of all time, The Empire Strikes Back would without question occupy the number one spot. I consider it to be the perfect balance of drama, action, comedy, and romance. The film is the most tightly focused of the Star Wars saga, relying the least on alien extras and glitzy technology and taking time to thoroughly develop its principal characters. Since I hold the movie in such high esteem, my expectations for a novelization of it are correspondingly lofty.

Unfortunately, Donald F. Glut's take on The Empire Strikes Back did not leave me with the same exhilaration as the film. I've mentioned before in my reviews of the prequel novelizations that what I look for in a movie interpretation is an expansion of the material presented in the film. This expansion could take the form of new (or removed!) scenes, deeper insights into character psyches, rewritten dialogue, or many other changes. This novel stays quite faithful to the film and does not make much effort at any exploration of the characters beyond what is presented on the screen. Dialogue is occasionally tweaked, but the alterations do not reveal any new information. Small scene additions such as an Imperial Probe Droid tangling with a Wampa (or "Wampa Ice Creature," as it is always cited in the text) are fun but few and far between.

Glut writes descriptively and with a flowing style that keeps the story moving briskly. The novel clocks in at a very terse 216 pages in my 1995 hardcover edition. More time is spent on fleshing out the opening Hoth sequences than the climactic Bespin scenes, where the story races to its conclusions. I've noticed this trend of allocating significantly more detail to opening scenes in several of the novelizations. Presumably this is due to the authors not wanting to disrupt the flow of events as the plot lines are woven together, but sometimes it feels more like the book just runs out of steam.

When this novelization of Episode V was written, Star Wars was an unparalleled global phenomenon. Glut presumably knew this book would be read by millions and would possibly stand the test of time along with the film. I wish the book had higher goals than simply replaying the events seen on screen verbatim, that it had spent more time delving into the characters or filling in some of the blank spots left in the movie script. As it stands, it is a serviceable adaptation of the film but not much more.

You can think of this as a course in very specialised antenna design. Certainly, the broad concepts would be immediately recognisable to any engineer who has built antennas. But here the sources that are being detected are at far reaches indeed. Correspondingly, the sizes of each radio dish far exceeds your typical antenna in industrial or military use.

Of course, the book points out that radio telescopes further enhance their resolving power by positioning these dishes at precise distances from each other, and adjusting the phases of incoming signals accordingly. To someone new to radio astronomy, one of the impressive achievements is that an array of dishes can thus be combined into one large telescope, spanning several kilometers.

The book then shows how this is taken to a logical limit of VLBI. Where arrays at different locations across the globe might combine their signals, giving a telescope comparable to the size of the globe, for greater resolution. A tribute to how engineering helps drive advances in pure research.

At first glance, it seems difficult to imagine Star Wars presented as a radio serial. Wouldn't the story be weakened by the loss of visuals? This remarkable production, broadcast on National Public Radio in 1981, proves that sounds convey pictures quite well on their own. John Williams's original score and sound effects from the film add drama and depth to the story, and the characters are brought to life by a talented cast including Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels reprising their roles as Luke Skywalker and C-3PO. Though Brock Peters's Darth Vader is a bit of a disappointment (James Earl Jones left some pretty big boots to fill), Perry King does a fine turn as Han Solo, and Ann Sachs makes a believable Princess Leia. The story itself has been greatly expanded, and listeners are treated to several new scenes, including conversations between Princess Leia and her father on Alderaan and Biggs Darklighter's confession to Luke that he had decided to join the Rebel Alliance after leaving the Imperial Space Academy. Presented in 13 episodes, this excellent radio drama is enjoyable even for those whom audiobooks usually leave cold. In 1981, the phenomenally popular movie Star Wars was adapted into a radio drama. The series ran as 13 half-hour episodes. This being about three times as long as the movie, a lot of extra scenes were added, especially back stories for many of the characters. The only actors from the movie that reprised their roles from the movie were Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker and Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, but most of the actors taking over the other roles do a good job. Most Star Wars fans will probably enjoy this.

Splendid Radio Adaptation of Star Wars, Episode IV.......2005-06-10

I have fond memories of myself eagerly awaiting each installment of this fantastic radio drama adaptation of the original "Star Wars" film back when it aired originally in 1981. Brian Daley did an excellent job via his superb scripts giving us more details of the relationships between Luke Skywalker and his Tatooine friend Biggs Darklighter and between Princess Leia and her father on Alderaan. We also learn here how Princess Leia obtained the technical plans for the Death Star. Both Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels give superb performances of their screen characters, Luke Skywalker and C3PO respectively. However, the rest of the cast is just as fine with a fine - if somewhat restrained - Darth Vader voiced by Brock Peters and Ann Sachs as Princess Leia. Both the sound effects by Ben Burtt and of course the original film score by John Williams are absolutely splendid. This is a spellbinding radio drama that should appeal to diehard fans of "Star Wars".

At first, the idea seems bizarre, even ridiculous. Star Wars, a movie best known for its vistas of alien worlds and epic battles, as a 13 part radio drama? No way would it work, right?

Well, unless you have the cold heart of a Sith, Star Wars did indeed translate well from the silver screen to radio, thank you very much. Yes, Star Wars' visual effects are a big part of the magic of the saga, but the heart and soul of George Lucas' galaxy far, far away are the characters and the storyline. And while the movie is satisfying on its own, the radio dramatization written by the late Brian Daley takes us beyond the movie....beyond the screenplay...and even beyond the novelization.

By expanding the movie's story beyond its two hour running time, the Radio Drama allows us to catch glimpses of Luke Skywalker's life BEFORE the movie. It tells us how Princess Leia acquired the Death Star plans....and what, exactly, happened to her during her interrogation aboard the Empire's battle station...(it is an interesting scene, but not for the squeamish, by the way). In short, by expanding the story to nearly seven hours, characters we loved on screen acquire depth only equaled by novelizations.

The Radio Drama makes extensive use of material written (and in some cases filmed) for A New Hope's silver screen version but cut for editorial or technical reasons. Also, Ben Burtt's sound effects, John Williams' score, and the acting of Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and Anthony Daniels (See Threepio) give the whole project its "true" Star Wars cachet.

This expands and explains so much of the underlying story. I only wish there was more! This was the only CD in the player of my truck for 4 weeks! I listened to it a bit at a time at least 5 times before even turning on the radio again! Well made and executed drama.

This Radio Dramatization is excellant. It keeps the original spirit of Star Wars (A New Hope) while telling the story in a different way. The scenes and diologue that were not in the movie give a different perspective to the story that does nothing short of enrich it.

Bob and Ray's swan song.......2004-06-22

If you do not already know who Bob and Ray were, I would be hard-put to sum them up briefly. They were a brilliant comedy team who came of age in the golden age of radio and whose sketches endlessly satirized radio braodcasting itself. They created a large cast of comic characters, stretching their pliable voices a million different ways. Their humor was subtle and refined - they were two of the greatest deadpan comics of all time.

Bob and Ray's main medium was radio - they were shy men who did not generally work well on stage or TV. But they did do two stage shows, one of which was "A Night of Two Stars" from the 1980's (the twilight of their career). I recommend this recording only to those who already know and love Bob and Ray. It is not a good introduction to Bob and Ray's work as a whole; some of the sketches are not very well chosen, in my opinion. But die-hard Bob and Ray devotees will love this. Carnegie Hall is packed with Bob and Ray fans - people who grew up on this wonderful duo - and the atmosphere is infectious. Bob and Ray bring out some of their classic characters, and the audience cheers them on as if they were old friends. What a wonderful way to end their remarkably long career (Bob and Ray did comedy together from 1946 untill Ray's death in 1990). What a wonderful farewell to these remarkable gentlemen of comedy. And best of all, we get the wonderful Al Hirschfeld caricature on the cover! Also be sure to get CLASSIC BOB AND RAY, BOB AND RAY: THE LOST EPISODES, (both of which show B & R in their prime) and the award-winning BEST OF BOB AND RAY (from their public radio show in the 1980's).

Terry Gross & Stars: Up to her usual standards.......2007-05-25

When Terry Gross interviews someone, customarily the subject is remote. That is, the person that she is talking to is located in another city, sometimes half a continent away. I have a recurring fantasy, based on my years of listening to her splendid interviews, that someone always arranges that the engineer in the remote location has a sign that he holds up at some point in the interview.

The sign simply says, "That's a good question, Terry." And then those words magically come out of the subject's mouth.

Nobody else consistently hits that many bullseyes. This is a highlight reel.

Gross's Stars.......2007-02-11

NPR's Terry Gross tend to ask question the general public what to know. Her interviews are well researched and she pulled no punches when she asks a question.

In this collection Stars, she covers the gambit from Robin Williams, Tim Curry to Jodie Foster, George Clooney and Daid Cronenberg. She does not make her interviews fan like, however she covers what fans want to hear. She also glosses over items people do want to hear.

Her intelligence of her subject matter transends any glossed over information..I think that is why she is NPR's best interviewer

If you want insighting into people not celebrities, this two disk collection is for you

This is a perfect look back over the decades of Star Trek collectibles and toys. It is well organized. Fans of only one series may go directly there and concentrate on those items. General Trekkers will enjoy browsing throughout. It is amazing how many items are listed. It is hard to believe a book would be misjudged on the basis of one small line of items so far on the edge of the field! Get this book!

There are many collectibles listed in this book. Also there are good pictures and descriptions. However, some of the best Star Trek collectibles and memorabilia are the Star Trek Autographed Plaques/Items done by "THE SCORE BOARD, INC.", but unfortunately in this book there are not informations about them.
