Book Description

Arp's new book is a frontal assault on the standard model of the universe, replete with anecdotes and illustrations, including 8 pages of colour plates.

"Seeing Red" represents a senior scientist's personal account of the crisis in moderrn astronomy. Dr. Arp presents observations showing that extragalactic redshifts are not caused by an expanding universe. He crafts up an empirical picture of the birth and evolution of quasars and galaxies, demonstrating that crucial observations have been ignored and suppressed by the astronomy community. Finally, he cites examples of how academic science fails its ideals and potential.

5 out of 5 stars Calling it as he sees it........2007-08-30

One of the greatest travesties committed in science in the last 100 years was the excommunication and banishment of professional astronomer Dr Halton Arp. In this down-home account of his 5-decades journey in astrophysics, Arp describes his observational discovery of objects that could not be explained within the context of prevailing cosmological doctrine, and gives a surprisingly evenhanded report of his apalling treatment at the hands of those in control of major US observatories and the journals of astrophysics. He must be angry, surely, yet he doesn't show it. Read my version of events in my new book. The Virtue of Heresy: Confessions of a Dissident Astronomer

5 out of 5 stars Scholarship and Dogma.......2007-07-22

It's an indictment on establishment science that a scholar of this calibre found it necessary to publicise his research and findings in book form in the public domain, rather than through the normal peer review channels.
However, this greater accessibility has been a bonus for laymen like myself. Arp's work is quite simply of profound importance in showing the serious problems underpinning current assumptions - and conclusions - regarding redshift, and cosmology in general.
This book, and his equally excellent earlier work "Quasars, Redshifts, and Controversies" are a 'must read' for anyone interested in astronomy based on true scholarship.
Apart from being textbook source material for astronomical studies, the books also provide a sobering insight into the unethical manner in which Arp has been treated by the establishment: from being a pillar of respect, he was treated like a pariah after pursuing observations and conclusions that were contrary to accepted models.

5 out of 5 stars The Modern Day Galileo.......2007-07-09

Halton Arp is regarded as the Modern Day Galileo for good reason. His telescope time was taken off him when his observations contradicted theory, and he moved to work at the Max Planck institute in Germany, where the academic climate was more liberal. In Chapter 10 Arp likens Academic Science to the medieval church, as many now do!

Arp was a brilliant student of the famous Edwin Hubble, whose work is more palatable to the mainstream. Arp, however, has probably surpassed his mentor, and has effectively destroyed the theoretical basis for an expanding universe. Bye bye Big Bang, it was nice knowing you!

Oh, and by the way. This book is a great and fascinating read.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, just wow!.......2006-11-23

I suppose as a relative layman I may not be qualified to assess the scientific merit of this book. However, Arp's no-nosense explanations both of the observations, the data and the politics leave little doubt in the mind that there are disturbing problems in "modern" science.

It is sad to see that science has become the very dogmatic expression of ideas that it was supposed to supercede.

Anyway, I guess I should say that the book is a great read. I made it through the intro and up to about page 25 before I even knew what hit me. If it wasn't for a call from an emphatic relative interrupting me with a phone call, I might have gotten half way through the book in one sitting.

For those unfamiliar with the technical jargon A) look it up (expand your mind) B) look at the various pictorial plates and their simple-language explanations. This book really can be good for both laymen and the more technically inclined. It does seem to be geared relatively well toward the lay reader. If you have a passing knowledge of the subject or are an amateur hobbyist, most of the concepts aren't so arcane that you couldn't look up definitions online and get a sense of what's being said.

That said, if you know what Arp is talking about, it's a real page-turner. If you're unfamiliar with Arp's work and how it has been suppressed and marginalized in mainstream circles (ostensibly ignoring solid scientific data), it's something of an eye-opener.

At what point does a series of "just one more isolated incidence" translate into a landslide of technical data that SHOULD overwhelm and overturn the rickety old boat known as the Big Bang theory? If just a small fraction of what Arp suggests is accurate (redshift =/= recessional velocity =/= distance), it would mean the death of the Big Bang theory, and hopefully the rise of a newer, better, observationally sound theory. As Arp says, theory should be fitted to the data, NOT the other way around. Observe first, theorize later. Otherwise, you're looking through the wrong end of the telescope and telling us only what you "imagine" you see.

This book should be a wake-up call to the scientific community. Anyone who hasn't read it, should. Even if you don't become a convert, it is sometimes good to be able to look through a "new"/"different" set of eyes. You just MIGHT, then, learn something.

5 out of 5 stars What an amazing book!.......2005-03-30

As recently as the the era of Galileo in the 17th century, the dominant human institution was the Roman Catholic Church. Today, 400 years later, the world has changed greatly, yet we humans are very much the same. Human nature has changed little, if at all. The contemporary Church, of course, is a dead or dying echo of its former self. The dominant institution today is the scientific establishment: now manned by an elite priesthood of technocrats, most of them specialists who know more and more about less and less. World class maverick astronomer Halton Arp, who spent a career studying emerging galaxies in the deep ranges of space, compares the lot of them to the medieval Church. Arp has it exactly right. Oh ecce homo: The more things change...

Our biggest problem today is a science establishment that has made a number of erroneous fundamental assumptions about the natural order, assumptions that are comparable to the religious doctrines of the medieval Church. The public is generally unaware of these assumptions. They are so much a part of the fabric of science itself as to be all but invisible even to scientists!

Arp deconstructs one of these in this amazing book: the red shift. Arp piles up case on case, example after example, until the sheer weight of evidence becomes overwhelming. Yet Arp was rewarded for his trouble by having his telescope taken away!

Obviously the creme de la creme of modern science, the Big Bang astronomers, are so full of their own mathematical hubris and grand theory of all and everything that they wouldn't know how to interpret raw observational data if it slapped them cold in the face. It's one thing to examine a world of data and arrive at a hypothesis that explains the data. It's another to treat assumptions as if they were conclusions, meanwhile, tossing out as junk all of the anomalous material that didn't know it was supposed to fit the dominant Big Bang theory. Sad to say, this is the condition of astronomy, today.

All of which matters greatly because in 2005 we are staring down the barrel of peak oil, now just over the horizon and bearing down on us harder every day. The likelihood looms of a world economic meltdown. As the drama unfolds across the world stage the US colossus seems hell-bent to hasten and deepen the crisis by intervening militarily to protect America's privileged access to and sacrosanct control over the oil markets.

In a word: we face an energy crunch, and the growing likelihood of regional and world war fought for oil. We need a science that can help us out of this mess. And the picture one gets from Seeing Red is not encouraging. Credit Halton Arp for telling it like it is. This is an extremeing well written book -- though not an easy read. It took me 2 months to get through it, but it was well worth the effort.

If Arp is right, our current science model is NOT going to be able to deliver an abundant and clean energy alternative. These guys don't even know which end of a telescope is up. Obviously, we need a paradigm shift in science! Bravo to Arp for sounding the alarm and asking the appropriate questions!

Book Description

Still unsolved, still baffling, still claiming new victims. Here are the untold stories.

A pilot reports a strange haze enveloping his plane, then disappears; eleven hours after fuel starvation, as if calling from a void, he is heard 600 miles away. He requests permission to land, then vanishes forever. A freighter steaming over placid seas disappears without a trace. A pleasure yacht ghosts past without a soul on board. A pilot calls for help because a "weird object" is harassing his plane. A jet collides with an "unknown" and is never found. . . .

Into the Bermuda Triangle is the first comprehensive examination of these baffling disappearances in more than a generation. Drawing on official reports from the NTSB and other investigative agencies as well as interviews with scientists, theorists, and survivors, leading authority Gian Quasar not only sets the record straight on previously examined cases, he also offers a bulging file of new cases, the collective results of his twelve-year investigation. In meticulous detail this unflinching account:

In this age of technological and scientific discovery, there are still mysteries that transcend understanding. The Bermuda Triangle is one.

Has some really good information and it's a good way to get some facts on the subject. Overall, it's not expensive at all and it ships pretty fast. I recommend it if you have a school project or essay to write, it pretty much gives you enough facts and understanding of the subject to get started.

4 out of 5 stars Passage Into Time.......2007-01-09

This is a very interesting book and a bit eerie. It seems "Out-worldly" to lose technical equipment such as airplanes in a perfectly clear sky, especially when that's not what the pilots report seeing. Ships that disappear within hailing distance of the safe shores is also spooky. The book is really worth taking the time to read and get into. The photographs also are a great help.

Dr. Arp has long advocated that quasars and other high redshift objects can be ejected from nearby lower redshift galaxies. This catalog presents numerous examples of the associations he finds between high redshift objects and their low redshift parents. The book begins with an overview of the patterns and then proceeds to an extensive catalog with maps, descriptions, lists, and recommended follow-up observations for each object. Seventeen color plates are found at the end of the catalog. The numerous examples are compelling and make a strong case for follow-up observations. The book is a good read and a great look!

4 out of 5 stars Shocking but True!.......2007-05-14

The book gives a good insight into the wild life of Little Richard which rings true but is nonetheless shocking even for an open-minded reader. Yet,I can't help admire the man for giving it his all and the frank disclosure he affords in his book.

4 out of 5 stars Long Overdue Biography of a King.......2002-09-23

The Homewood, IL reviewer (07-08-01) suggested that the author rushed this work. It's been well-documented in print and on radio interviews that the book took many years to write - in fact the author made several trips from England to California to speak one-on-one with The Quasar himself, his former Managers, sidemen, songwriters, and on and on.
What the reviewer is probably most bothered by is the discography section. Yes, it was poorly edited and lacking in some important details - but it's been suggested that the sessiongraphy was conceived to include a running commentary by Little Richard and to account for, perhaps, one-third of the book. It's understandable that such an approach benefits only deep fans and historians, so the proverbial "bottom line" was apparently applied to the project.
Life & Times...is the author's first book and he displayed a fine writing ability, with a colorful descriptive sense. At times, his hyperbolic approach can make the unitiated uneasy, but considering the bombastic style of the subject, it fits.
Although some parts of his career remain in mystery even after this book release, the better-known periods recieve a thorough review: his childhood years involving sexual confusion and a growing awareness that he had something special to offer the music culture; the swingin' R & B years when R & R was confined to clubs; the R & R Revival period when he made a successful "comeback" and convinced many that he had the greatest voice all along; the struggle with drugs in the early '70s leading to an almost overnight clean-up and a rediscovered spirituality.
Richard was not singing Rock and Roll when the hardcover came out in September, 1984. It is believed that this work created a strong enough interest in his career, that a critically acclaimed "Contemporary Christian" album "Lifetime Friend" and a memorable appearance in Paul Mazursky's movie "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" (which included a Richard Top 50 hit for '86) led to his return to Rock in '89. (Which made some folks, who thought he was better situated in the non-secular world, uncomfortable). But there is no doubt that this book filled a major void in the rock music press.

1 out of 5 stars a shabby scrapbook.......2001-07-09

Little Richard is such an important figure in 20th-century music that it is crucial that there be a biography of him out there. However, this biography is more a scrapbook than a polished work. Oftentimes, you can't tell when the author, Richard, or an acquaintance is speaking. There is no analysis of the events in Richard's life. This book pales in comparison to texts on Billy Strayhorn, Josephine Baker, etc. This book drags on about concert after concert after concert. Besides, Richard is in his homophobic phase at the time of the book's writing and there is no attempt to put his self-loathing into context. I needed to learn more about Richard, so I am glad this book exists. However, this was a poor piece of autobiography and I am surprised that the author did not take the time to fine tune his work.

4 out of 5 stars Most objective book written on the subject.......2006-08-01

As a huge fan of the paranormal and any sort of "Fortean" subject matter, and as a former professional seaman, I have always been fascinated by the whole Bermuda Triangle mystery. (My career as a sailor led to my traveling extensively throughout the areas of the Bermuda Triangle while serving in the United States Coast Guard. I also worked as an employee at the "secret naval base" at AUTEC on Andros, Island in the Bahamas for an 18 month period from late 1984 to 1986. During my years at sea, I had two personal encounters with strange, unexplained phenomena while transiting through the Bermuda Triangle, both quite similar to events described by the author in this book).

Into the Bermuda Triangle is very well researched; in fact, one might even accuse author Quasar of overkill in that area to some degree! But while meticulous research is a commendable and necessary thing considering the nature of the subject matter, my only real objection here lies in the fact that the author tends to bore the reader in places with extremely dry recitations from the data he has uncovered, choosing to stick to the plain facts and not stopping to include dialog that is necessary purely for entertainment value. (In a real sense the book, at times, lacks the right amount of "juiciness" that will hold a reader's interest).

That criticism aside, the rest of the writing is excellent, the editing and layout very professionally done and the author has included a great photo section and lists of his source materials. (The latter is important to researchers and to the book's credibility: one need only enter in Quasar's data into an Internet search engine or government data base to check the reliability of a report!)

The prime importance of Quasar's work lies in the fact that he has been able to prove that the Bermuda Triangle mystery is an ongoing one and that it hasn't been "solved" by anyone. He covers old cases, but more importantly, picks up where other authors left off in the late 70s and proves through modern research that ships and planes are still continuing to disappear under highly mysterious circumstances, many of them in broad daylight and often under perfect flying/sailing conditions.

Quasar explores many theories to explain the disappearances, a few that are highly thought-provoking (such as the discussions of witness-observed space-time phenomena and weird magnetic anomalies) while other ideas, though interesting to consider (and even possible) are highly debatable as to their true viability (in particular, the tired old "lost Atlantis" theories are revisited and the discussion of anomalous electromagnetic phenomena observed in the Triangle area is equated to the so-called "Hutchison Effect," a term coined to describe similar phenomena allegedly recreated by controversial electronic experimenter John Hutchison),

Final analysis: This book is the best one ever written on the subject of the Bermuda Triangle and the most objective in its approach to one of the more enduring and unexplained nautical mysteries of our times.

I recommend reading it to those persons who are seeking the latest information about the Bermuda Triangle and who want to learn whether or not the mystery is still ongoing. (It is!)

1 out of 5 stars Too fictional to be non-fiction, too boring to be fiction.......2006-02-13

I would give this 0 stars if I could. The book is basically two parts. Part 1 is a boring recitation of "creatively edited" NTSB reports and USCG reports. I knew things were going bad when the "mystery" of N9027Q disappearing failed to mention the "pilot" had STOLEN the airplane (see http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=35436&key=0). The loss of the Revonoc is mentioned, but the fact that the boat was in one of the worst storms ever seen in the area is not. The author's evident unfamiliarity with radios, boats and airplanes also annoys constantly. Very few, if any, civilian aircraft carry emergency radio beacons that can be jettisoned or would break free and float in a water landing. Some boats carry these, but they are expensive and more the exception than the rule. The author fails to realize that is entirely possible for radio communications to be disrupted or to be able to talk to distant stations while not being able to contact nearby ones without any supernatural help. I once was able to contact Saint Thomas Coast Guard when I was over 1,000 miles away while not being able to raise a nearby USCG station. No UFOs involved. The author refers to the "tower" at Norman's Cay when there is no control tower there. The second part of the book delves into about every crackpot pseudo-science theory out there. Perpetual motion, crystal power, zero-point energy, ancient civilizations, Atlantic, Edgar Cayce, trees on Mars, and then some. The only thing I didn't find is the 200 MPG carburetor. BTW, I am a commercial pilot and sailor. I have traversed this area many times by boat and plane.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2005-10-03

This is an excellent book on the subject. Author doesn't leap to far fetched concusions but neither is he accepting the standard explanations(bad weather, pilot error, etc). Very insightful. Its been a while since I enjoyed the book as much as this one. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Food For Inquisitive Minds.......2005-01-17

Based on 12 years of serious, professional, and objective research, this book analyzes the mysterious happenings of the Bermuda Triangle in great detail. Unlike many authors who tend to be biased, Gian Quasar deals with this fascinating subject objectively. The author does not claim to have all the answers, only that there is MUCH that we do not know.
This truly thought provoking book is a must read for anyone who has a curious mind and wants to at least try to comprehend one of the world's greatest unsolved mystery, the mystery of the Devil's Triangle.

    3 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking.......2005-01-02

This is a very thought provoking book about the Bermuda Triangle. The author explores and offers theories for the strange happenings and disappearances in this area from a pre-historical very advanced race that was wiped out by a natural disaster leaving behind buried sources of power effecting crafts in this and other areas of the world, inter-terrestrial aliens, strange energy sources that we do not yet understand, and time-space warps. He approaches these fantastic theories from a very scientific and believable viewpoint. It's up for the reader to decide what to believe.

The drawback to this book is the first few chapters become an almost mind numbing recitation of disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle. At times the writing style is rather dry as well so frankly the book is a little boring at times. But some of the topics covered do indeed broaden one's thinking about the world in general and this topic in particular.

2 out of 5 stars I could never get into this book........2004-04-23

Perhaps it was just the professor, but I could never get into this book. I think its hopelessly boring, and like alot of graduate textbooks in astro, it has a TERRIBLE index. You can't find anything you need in terms of numbers or equations with the index, you must read the book cover to cover to know where something is.

It also has way too many numbers scattered in tables, and you must read the chapter to know what assumptions were made when he calculated those numbers. Our entire class had such a difficult time with homework using this book that I doubt any of us would give a good review of the book.

My own research is in AGN, and for the most part he does OK in explaining them but he can confuse you in comparing them.

5 out of 5 stars Please create an audio adaptation ..........1999-06-02

To the publisher I would appreciate it if the publisher could produce an audio adaptation of this book. I would love to listen to this while I drive to work and to let my 16 month old son listen to it as a bedtime story. Arnold D Veness

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction for the researcher........1997-02-19

Very complete and interesting, this book is aimed to the graduate student or the researcher that wants to delve into this subject. It is the perfect starting point for people interested in beginning research in the physics of gaseous nebulae and active galactic nuclei. Obviously, since some effort is required to the reader, due to the complexity of the matters treated, some background in mathematics and physics is required to get the best out of it

        Book Description

The aim of State of the Universe 2007 (and subsequent volumes issued annually) is to provide an annual astronomy review suitable for the popular science level reader to be published every year in September in a format that will be suitable for an appeal to the Christmas market. The book will cover all major astronomical news on topics beyond the Solar System and place them in the context of the longer term goals that astronomers and astrophysicists around the world are aiming for. The target is to capture the excitement and vibrancy of modern astronomical research. The book will present a complete list of the major announcements, discoveries and news items from each year, with the major ones being explained in detail through selected chapters being written by invited contributors who are at the forefront in those fields. The January meeting of the American Astronomical Society each year will be the major source of astronomical news for the following year’s volume, giving access to potential authors and contacts with public information officers of major observatories, space centers, etc.

The regular set features, which will appear every year, will include an annual chronological list of the latest discoveries announced during the previous twelve months; a review of the major news stories of the year with the main characters; a list of launches of major astronomical observatories/satellites during the past year; a list of planned future astronomical satellites; basic data on all astronomical observatories currently in operation with web links for the reader to dig deeper; list of anniversaries and landmarks; the latest from the BadAstronomy website by Dr Phil Plait, and the cartoon feature.

        5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2007-04-16

When I read about the book I was quite excited and when I received the book, a few days ago, I was not disappointed. The book has a part dedicated to brief news and other with in-depth articles about very interesting topics (gravitational waves and LIGO, supernova 1987A remnants, gamma ray bursts...) and appendixes with data about current and future telescopes and extrasolar planets. I have still not finished it, but it won't take me long to.

Only slight cons is that I expected it to cover 2006 news and, because editorial schedule, it covers march 2005 - march 2006. Then maybe State of the Universe 2007 was not the most proper or accurate title. Other con was that I expected glossy paper, and it's not, Mate astronomical pictures are not so spectacular, but I guess this way it's cheaper (and more ecologic?).

I hope next year will bring a new State of The Universe, and I sure will buy it,

        5 out of 5 stars Excelent Information.......2007-03-19

I read the Martin Radcliffe's book "State of the Universe 2007" and I think it was a good idea to write a book like this. It is informative, well documented, comprehensive and provides you a good vision of what is going on in the different areas of the Universe whicha are under investigation. I think he should publish it every year, to keep un up-to-date with the latest discoveries. We could collect them and follow up different researches and their results and novelties. Superb.
