Book Description
Over recent years there has been marked growth in interest in the study of techniques of cosmic ray physics by astrophysicists and particle physicists. Cosmic radiation is important for the astrophysicist because in the farther reaches of the universe. For particle physicists, it provides the opportunity to study neutrinos and very high energy particles of galactic origin. More importantly, cosmic rays constitue the background, and in some cases possibly the signal, for the more exotic unconfirmed hypothesized particles such as monopoles and sparticles. Concentrating on the highest energy cosmic rays, this book describes where they originate, acquire energy, and interact, in accreting neutron stars, supernova remnants, in large-scale shock waves. It also describes their interactions in the atmosphere and in the earth, how they are studied in surface and very large underground detectors, and what they tell us.

I looked at equation (3.22) for other purpose (than counting
cosmic ray particle collisions) and there seems to be a sign mistake in the first equation (integrated mass
<25g/cm^2): as
it is, the equation indicates that the mass increases as the
air column gets smaller (or higher altitude).
It seems to be a pretty colorful "fitting formula" and it
could have been more useful if the reference to M. Shibata can
be found in the reference list (p.264: paperback) which may
have information on which "data" (most likely a combination
of measurements/modeling/computations) the formula originates from.
I presume that the next volume will have improved.

book and do not have a judgement. I chose the middle because I did not have choice not to choose. It will affect the
arithmetic statistics and if it matters, it is an unfortunate result of the limited survey method that mandates a choice of rating.
Fills a huge gap.......2000-06-22
With interest in cosmic rays and particle astrophysics growing, Tom Gaisser's Cosmic Rays and Particle Physics is really the only contemporary introduction to the field suitable for undergraduates as well as beginning graduate students. There is no attempt to be fully comprehensive - the field is too broad for that - but processes relating to extensive air showers and their products (including muons and neutrinos) are covered in some detail. I regularly recommend this book to students who are considering research in particle astrophysics. There are a few gaps and a few topics covered in more detail than most people need, as is typical for a first edition. I hope Prof. Gaisser will find the time to prepare a revised and updated edition soon!

This book provides an exhaustive account of the origin and dynamics of cosmic rays. Divided into three parts, it first gives an up-to-date summary of the observational data, then -- in the following theory section -- deals with the kinetic description of cosmic ray plasma. The underlying diffusion-convection transport equation, which governs the coupling between cosmic rays and the background plasma, is derived and analyzed in detail. In the third part, several applications of the solutions of the transport equation are presented and how key observations in cosmic ray physics can be accounted for is demonstrated. Covers cosmic ray astrophysics pretty well, but I've opted to stick with volume 1 of Longair for the grad class is cosmic rays which I'm teaching this Spring. Why? This book seems to have huge gaps in its coverage and too much of a European focus with references. Still, it's a good book, and anyone working in cosmic rays is bound to buy it in the end...

Sometimes you make the wrong decisions for the right reasons. I flatter myself this purchase falls in that category.
Paul A. LaViolette, Ph.D, is without a doubt a very bright fellow. If "Earth Under Fire" is intended as a parody of junk science, it most certainly attains the author's lofty goal, in spades. Seldom have I had the pleasure of reading such fulsome, literate, and totally meaningless gibberish as is contained in this beautifully illustrated tome.
The sardonic premise is that a combination of Tarot cards and a tortured deconstruction of astrology provide the keys to all the secrets of advanced physics and theories of the universe.
As one might suspect, Dr. LaViolette gives his satiric theories a millenarian cast: we are doomed, doomed, I say, by a civilization-ending event of cosmic proportions to which I (Dr. LaViolette) alone have the key.
The event alluded to, long story short, is a kind of death ray emanating from the center of our galaxy that's going to make us all mighty sorry we were ever born.
I'm a fan of millenarian schemas, still unsure of which doomsday scenario I most prefer: earthquakes, super-volcanoes, catastrophic floods, strikes by huge meteors, global pandemics, fiery global warming, alien invasions, cockroach mutations, or instant glaciers that render North America an instant massive ice cube. The death ray idea is one I'm going to add to the list.
Should you buy this book? If you're a fan of this sort of thing and enjoy obsessing over the irreducibly inane, you will heart this book. Otherwise, go get a pizza.

In recent years, catastrophism has become somewhat more respectable in scientific circles, but marginalization of scientists avowing this theory is still happening. Paul LaViolette, who holds degrees in physics and systems science, has his own story to tell about bias in supposedly objective science.
Admittedly, he started out with a distinct handicap by basing his astronomical investigations on a decryption of the zodiac, as transmitted through traditional lore. According to him, the ancients bequeathed to us knowledge of an astronomical disaster that occurred toward the end of the last ice age: a massive explosion at the core of our galaxy, which caused a superwave of subatomic particles and rays that upon entering our solar system pushed huge amounts of debris toward the Sun leading to a significant decrease of sunlight.
He is of course not alone in postulating such a catastrophy some 15,000 years ago, but his explanation of the event is quite unique. Using mythology, star lore, astronomy, astrophysics, geology, archaeology, La Violette has succeeded in painting a colorful and fascinating picture of what he believes happened just before the emergence of the early civilizations. Clearly, something extraordinary happened and, if LaViolette is correct, it could happen again. It makes sense to generously support further research.
This work is best read in conjunction with Richard Firestone et al.'s The Cycle of Cosmic Catastrophes, also published by Bear & Co.

Monumental! Amazing!.......2006-03-14
One hardly knows where to begin to review a book of this kind. It's a tour de force that leaves one speechless. I had already read LaViolette's Genesis of the Cosmos -- which in my view was the biggest breakthrough in Egyptology since Champollion deciphered the Rosetta stone. In it LaViolette essentially decoded the ancient Egyptian religion. He showed that it was anything but a primitive pagan cult. It was rather a kind of time capsule: based on a physics so advanced that it was not until the 1970s that our modern science progressed enough to decipher it. The implication of course is that a remote culture with an advanced physics had to be a high civilization. OK. So what happened to it?
The author answers the question in Earth Under FIre. Understand, LaViolette didn't crank out this book in a year or even two. He's been working on this superwave theory for probably 30+ years. In a nutshell he's proposing that the galactic center periodically goes into a violent phase and releases vast amounts of cosmic radiation. Which spreads out across the galaxy triggering supernovae events and God only knows what all else. When the superwave reaches our solar system it encounters our sun's dust/gas nebular cloud which is far out beyond Pluto -- and it pushes lots of dust into our solar system. With results that are catastrophic for our planet.
The author does a fine job presenting his case. He has gathered reams of evidence -- and while I personally take issue with several points these are peripheral to his main argument. Indeed, I was tremendously impressed with the author's science acumen, his skill as a communicator, his eloquence in marshaling the evidence, and with the argument itself. I came away convinced. And it made me damn angry to learn that the bureaucrats have treated LaViolette so shabbily. He is doing important work and deserves to be fully funded.
One last point to show how all of this relates to your life: If you know your physics you will know that high energy photons, i.e. cosmic rays, behave like particles. They have mass and momentum. Which is another reason why these superwaves are so dangerous. There's a real possibility they are preceded by a horrific gravity wave. What's the relevance? It seems we had a minor event -- a gamma burst -- from the galactic center that arrived 44 hours after the Dec 2004 tsunami that leveled Sumatra and the Indian basin, killing 250,000+ people. Well, the quake that caused it may well have been triggered by the gravity wave that preceded the burst.
Enuf said. Brother, this is heavy medicine.

I have both hiking books--Best of Phoenix and Best of Flagstaff/Sedona. In fact, I am on my second copy of both as I have lent my first Phoenix copy to a friend (it disappeared) and wore out the first copy of my the Flagstaff/Sedona book. The maps are easy to follow and the topographical maps are awesome. Whenever I go hiking, I have two little girls (ages 1 and 4) in tow, so it is necessary to know the terrain inside and out before ever leaving home... Cosmic Ray is so detailed and so accurate that I never worry about being misinformed. Buy a copy for yourself and buy one for a friend... That way yours won't go missing!

I recently moved out here from the UK to Arizona. I was whining to my father (when he was visiting) that a lot of people had told me there's nowhere to go hiking around Phoenix and I was finding that hard to believe given how much open space there is around Phoenix.
Anyway, we were in a book shop when he pointed out this book. I bought it instantly and have so far enjoyed five of this guide's hikes . . . and have found some beautiful places thank's to Ray's help. I just wanted to thank the author for making me realise that not all of this country is owned and fenced off and there are some places you can go where you feel as if you're walking where no one else has! Great book.
excellent guide - very accurate.......2004-02-27
Ray's description and map of the hike at Pinnacle Peak is very accurate. Telling folks that dogs are not allowed, when flowers bloom and especially staying on the trail are great reminders for people. Ray has taken the time to obtain updated information. It is a great guide and we are using our copy constantly at Pinnacle Peak Park as hikers ask questions about other hikes in the area. Thanks for including Pinnacle Peak and the excellent write up on this area.

We live near Casa Grande, Arizona. We just purchased Hiking Phoenix and used it hiking at Lost Dutchman State Park in The Superstition Mountains. We love the humor as well as the wonderful maps. Also, we love the cactus identification.

My friends and I recently visited Phoenix for a few days to escape our freezing weather in Chicago. We had purchased a copy of Hiking Phoenix before leaving home. We found it a good choice. Information and directions arepresented in a easy to use format. The hikes were Camelback Mountain, Peralta trail in the Supertstition Mountains and Picacho Peak. All three werefairly short and tough, just as Ray had warned and all three were unforgetable. Great views, fabulous desert vegetation and easy to get to. The freeway dirctions were right on and got us straight to the trailhead. The information about difficulty and distance were also right on the money. I never would have thought that there was so much beauty in the desert. We really enjoyed ourselves. We are looking forward to returning and trying some of the easier hikes in Ray's book. thnaks for the great little guide.

The most well known and well loved mountain bike trail guide to the best summer and winter fat tire fun in Arizona. Cartoony, down to earth maps are adapted from topos and forest service charts, yet are friendly and easy to use. Maps are to scale and oriented north.

Best guide available.......2007-03-02
I'm a Flagstaff native and now living in Tucson. I STILL use this guide and carry it like a bible... it is, hands down, the best trail guide I've found. The information is presented in a clear and consise manner, with humor and great illustrations. When Cosmic Ray says that you will most likely ask "This is a trail???" (ie Airport Loop in Sedona) he is correct. Yes the maps may *seem* playful and rough, but they ARE spot-on... don't let them fool you.
As with ANY riding in Arizona... come prepared. Plenty of water, tools, extra tubes (did I mention extra tubes?) and Cosmic Rays.
Best Trail Guide .......2006-12-22
This is my 6th copy of Cosmic Ray's Trail guide. I tend to give copies to friends headed to Arizona for Bike vacations.
For me, Ray's trail guides have been a wonderful blend of humor and useful information. The trail descriptions have been very accurate and always includes additional information or some nice tips.
In numerous trips to Arizona, I've riden most of the trails mentioned in Flagstaff, Sedona, Phoenix and Tucson. My trail experiances have always accurately matched Ray's description.
If you are looking for a boring technical manual or something for GPS navigation, this book is not for you. This book is really about fun and enjoying some great new trails. Ray's descriptions will give you more than enough information to experience the trail for yourself.
Every time I return to Arizona, I pickup the latest version. This is the Arizona trail bible.
For what it's worth, you also need Topo's, good equipment and supplies. On the trail, things can happen and you need to be prepared.
Cosmic Ray replies.......2005-10-03
I am sorry Mr. Rawlins got lost, but keep in mind that my cartoony maps are traced from topos. They are to scale, oriented north and include many details and tips not found on topo maps. He says he got lost on every ride. Interesting. That's not what I hear from other riders. In fact, many, if not most of the rides in my book are SIGNED. Mr. Rawlins must not be paying attention. About "Rating The Rides". It is not possible to rate rides to satasfy every rider. Riders vary greatly in ability. On page 3 of my book there is an entire page devoted to "Rating The Rides" explaining exactly how I arrive at the ratings. Mr. Rawlins should try reading the book he is reviewing.
not perfect.......2005-06-18
I reviewed this book after I bought it and before I used it on my trip to AZ. I still like it a lot--it's charming, funny, and spot on about trails. Its technical ratings are cautious--trails he rated "advanced" I rode with ease with some walking, which is unusual for me. But the maps are "cute" and highly stylized, so don't depend on them. I got lost on every ride. Buy the local maps whereever you ride. But still buy the book.
Great Book but not always 100% accurate in descriptions.......2004-07-11
First, let me say what everyone else has - the book is the wonderful - the best mountain bike guide for the state of Arizona hands down. I like the format, the casual tone and depth of information.
That said, there are a few trails that I've run into that don't match the author's description quite right. For example, I don't think most people would consider Lower Oldham Trail in Flagstaff "No Sweat" or "Darn Easy". Certainly, its not the hardest trail in Flagstaff, but it is no trail for beginners or the family, which these ratings may imply. Up is pretty brutal and even down - well, there is a pretty sustained, somewhat technical climb involved. And the comment "If you love to carve some level grove, this is the ride for you" - the trail doesn't gain a ton of altitude, but does have some step ups and downs. This description is much more accurate for the nearby "Jump Trail."
FYI - If I were reading this review, I'd wonder if the author (me) is just a weak rider. All I can say is that there areother trails in the same that are actuall substantially easier (aerobically) yet rated harder than this one.
Anyway, don't be misled. If you are into Mountain Biking in AZ, buy the book - it is well worth it. But if don't know the area and you've got beginners or kids with you (or are not used to pedaling at 7000-9000 ft), you may want to check with the local bike shop for a little more insight into the best trails for you.

Favorite Hikes: Flagstaff & Sedona by Cosmic Ray.......2003-06-04
Just got back from Arizona- and we used this book extensively as it was easy to read, the maps accurate, and the book is quite entertaining. My 6 year old son stated that the Lava River Cave trail "changed his life" (in a good way). The trail trips turned out to be the highlight of our trip!! The authors advise is excellent and the designation of level of difficulty is on target.

As a transplanted Montanan, I don't trust much advice on hiking in Arizona. I thank you for the Favorite Hikes book. I used to hike in the Glacier and Bozeman area but have been out of the action for a few years since moving to Flagstaff and having a baby. I have found this guide to be accurate and reliable when planning hikes with my son and/or dog. Thanks again. Buying this book is the best 10 bucks I ever spent.

I love Cosmic Ray's guidebook to Flagstaff and Sedona hiking. I found the directions to the trailhead to be accurate and easy to find. The contour profiles made it easy to pick our hikes before we left home. His descriptions are humorous, accurate and helpful. He does not list ALL the hikes in the Flag-Sedona area as there are hundreds, but choses to stick to the 50 best of the best. I wish he would come to Scotland and publish one for here!
Book Description
There are many mysteries involving cosmic phenomena. Jerome Drexler used 14 of these and his analytical concept of dark matter(DM) relationism to discover a promising candidate for dark matter, the source of ultra-high energy cosmic rays, and theories for star formation, starburst galaxies, and the emergence of DM halos. To test the validity of his discoveries, Drexler used another 11 unexplained cosmic phenomena discovered by astronomers primarily during 2005. Utilizing his same promising dark matter candidate, Drexler was able to explain in a plausible manner all 11 of these recently discovered cosmic mysteries. Drexler's research has led not only to an identification of dark matter and to plausible explanations for the 25 cosmic phe-nomena, but also to a deeper understanding of many aspects of the cosmos, leading to a partial decoding of the cosmos.

Drexler's book was sent to me unsolicited inviting my feedback and comments. I cannot call myself even an amateur cosmologist therefore I cannot assess how plausible the explanations in this book are. Furthermore, I have not actually read it cover to cover. Nevertheless, I award it 4 stars for the following reasons:
1. The topic is well laid out and is made very accessible via extremely short chapters listed in a detailed table of contents. It is well indexed. A glossary is also included.
2. Throughout the book, use is made of lists, both bulleted and numbered, e.g. pp 110-114, making it easy to follow his arguments.
3. More importantly, it lists 58 references (7 to his own work) as well as a further 30 suggested sources. Readers are cautioned not to assume agreement in these sources with Drexler's views.
4. The book is intended to be provocative and to generate further thought and discussion. The Preface states: "This book, "Comprehending and Decoding the Cosmos," deviates significantly from mainstream cosmological and astrophysical theories."
I would not, of course, recommend a book just because of its layout and style. I see this book as a thought-provoking re-examination of existing observations and theories in addition to offering solutions and new ideas. I leave it to others to comment on the plausibility of these.
CHALLENGING & PROVOCATIVE THEORIES ON DARK MATTER/RELATIONALISM.......2006-08-26
This is another fantastic book by Dr. Drexler. Dr. Drexler identifies dark matter as a viable candidate and explicates his theory cogently by describing in detail the astronomical evidence he found that justifies his theory and conclusion. His most recent book, "Comprehending and Decoding the Cosmos," published this year (2006), delineates and expounds his theory to an even greater extent. I queried him regarding the use of the term relationism vis-a-vis reductionistic practices. Dr. Drexler thoroughly explicated this complex theory that he has posited in significant detail.
Dark Matter, is deemed by many to be the most elusive mystery of the universe, which is probably attributable to its massive, extensive, and hard-to-detect characteristic. Dr. Drexler, in his 2006 sequel, astutely delineates 14 mysterious phenomena, along with his new analytical decoding concept of dark matter relationism, to discover and identify a very promising dark matter candidate compatible with these 14 cosmic elements. In the process, he has quite possibly brought the decades old quest to identify dark matter to a successful conclusion. He adroitly then locates and analyzes an additional 11 unexplained cosmic phenomena, which were discovered and reported by various astronomers mostly during 2005. Drexler again, utilizing his same promising dark matter candidate, plausibly explicates all 11 of these recently discovered cosmic mysteries in his May, 2006 sequel.
I have personally purchased multiple copies of Dr. Drexler's 2003 and 2006 books for family members and friends at the University of Maine. I read with chagrin Dr. Marc "DM"s negative reviews on these books, which interestingly were both written and posted on May 31, 2006. I vehemently disagree with Dr. Marc's and JMK's reviews and evaluations, both of which bring to mind the saying attributable to Herbert Spencer: "Contempt prior to investigation..." Although Dr. Marc characterizes himself as a professional astronomer, I am constrained to believe that he is a grant-seeking, self-promoter, who perhaps has not even read Dr. Drexler's two books. As a professional man, with graduate degrees myself, I eschew hasty judgments when pondering the theories of colleagues and others. I have therefore indicated that neither of Dr. Marc's reviews were helpful to me, and in closing, I strongly urge every professional cosmologist, astronomer, astrophysicist, or interested novice, to read Dr. Drexler's books with an inquisitive and open mind. Do not be influenced by the pejorative and negative views espoused by Dr. Marc.
Baryons as Dark Matter.......2006-06-16
Since the discovery of DM, which many believe constitutes most of the mass of the universe, there has been a debate regarding the baryonic or non-baryonic nature of DM. Current scientific research favors non-baryonic particles with huge new detectors being built today that actually exclude baryons. At its heart, Drexler's book is philosophical in its approach, taking a contrarian view in the debate. Citing Ockham's razor and top-down vision, the author sorts recent astrophysics data of others to analyze and resolve the DM issue, asserting that DM consists of relativistic protons, i.e. baryons. A large amount of data is reviewed and the considerations seem persuasive. Not mentioned as a baryonic argument in favor of DM is another philosophical consideration relating to the significance of man in the Universe. If man is significant and perhaps even central in the universe, as Primack suggests in his new book, it would be a shame if the baryons of which we are made turn out to be cosmologically weird stuff. Drexler's book is worth a read.

I have read this book and it is another fine book by the Scientist, Mr. Drexler. I have followed Drexler's career since his days at Bell Labs-his founding of the Drexler Technology (Lasercard), his numerous patents -- He would not publish a book with research that is false. Did the other reviewer really read the book? I HAVE READ IT FROM COVER TO COVER AND IT OPENED MY MIND TO NEW IDEAS ABOUT THE COSMOS,ETC. EVERYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN GOOD , LOGICAL RESEARCH SHOULD READ THIS BOOK.

There are many reasons why Jerome Drexler's theory of dark matter is not widely accepted amongst astronomers. I am a professional astronomer working at a research establishment in California. The idea that relativisic protons can be responssible for the dark matter of the Universe seems ridiculous to me and this is why:
1. If dark matter consisted of relativistic particles (such as relativistic protons) then this is what astronomers would refer to as Hot Dark Matter. Hot Dark Matter has been ruled out as a form of dark matter because it does not allow the structures we see in the Universe. The reason because the particles are at such high velocities that they can never become gravitationally bound to each other, and all structure is wiped out. Galaxies cannot form, stars cannot form, planets cannot form. This would be a huge problem. This is why astronomers have come to believe in Cold Dark Matter (slow moving massive particles).
2. Protons are charged particles (they have positive charge). Any moving charged particle has both an electric and a magnetic field associated with it. Relativistic charged particles would create a huge electric and magnetic field. This would be easily observed. However, it has never been observed.
3. The Cold Dark Matter Particle (the WIMP) has never been observed for a reason. It's predicted mass lies just beyond the energies we can probe with our current particle accelerators. The next generation of particle accelerators will be able to probe these energies. These new particle accelerators will be coming online in the next 2 to 5 years, so watch this space. Admittedly, if we don't find the predicted WIMP (or neutralino as it is strictly called), then we do have to go back to the drawing boad.
I don't understand how this book has come to be published. The people deciding it should be published are obviously not professional astronomers. However, Jerome Drexler has never had his theory published in an astronomical journal. The reason is because it has never made it past the peer review stage... because his theory is simply WRONG. It does not stand up to experimental tests or what we know about the Universe.
